What happened to this place?? It's like night and day from two years ago. (1) customer service nonexistent - even other customers and I talked about how the staff seemed miserable and wished no customers walked in. Really makes me wonder if the employees are working at this location against their will like some kind of forced labor to repay their debt. All they do is pressure you to get more nail services done even though I already said I just wanted a pedicure. The pedicure did not include any scrubbing and a very quick get-you-out-the-door service. (2) OBVIOUS COST CUTTING - this place use to prides itself with more premium nail polishes like Deborah Lippman and Butter but now majority of the polishes are generic brands and the staff even "push" customers to choose the cheaper polishes. The absolute worst offense is that they don't even want to switch on their drying UV light for your toes. After I was rushed off from the pedicure, I was waiting for my polish to dry but the UV light didn't work and neither did the fan. I told the staff and they just said it's a sensor but there's nothing they can do. To make matters worse, because the staff wanted to close up shop, me and another customer were shuffled out the door before any of our polish had enough time to dry (given their nonworking drying unit) and lack of drying sprays. We literally had to stand outside the salon to wait for our nails to dry before being able to put on shoes. Message to Owner: either your staff are held hostage working for the lowest of wages because you are exploiting them for extreme cost-cutting measures or you have no idea what's going on in your salon despite the cameras. I visit Coatroom since it's near my job. I never loved it, I've only ever stopped in when my regular nail tech doesn't have availability or I can't get to Old Town. BUT, I got my nails done today by Nina and I absolutely LOVED her. She pays attention to detail and takes her time, but doesn't waste my time. I got a gel manicure and regular pedicure in 90 minutes which is pretty standard. I will def be back to see Nina! read more

Literally the worst nails I've ever had in my entire life! I have been here before and my nails were so fine.. this time I went to a new lady.. I think her name was Molly. At least that's what her Starbucks cup said. She obviously is not trained well for SNS dip powder and so should NOT be allowed to do the nails of customers who request SNS. It took her almost 2 hours to do something that takes 1. I asked her multiple times to reshape the nails. Not the length, but the actual bumpy texture of the nail bed. I went in for a gel polish change. I got there an hour before they closed, but figured since I wasn't asking for a full manicure, it should be okay. Right away, I could tell they were reluctant to take my business. I felt very unwelcomed and like the workers did not want me there (it's still money within business hours!) I went to pick out my color but after a few seconds, my technician rushed me away to sit and get started. She explained she would pick out my color....uhhh okay. She removed my old gel polish and started filing and picking away at my cuticles--which I tried to stop her because I explained I didn't want a full manicure. She ignored me and still picked away. She was rushed and rough and even cut me with a file until I bled. I could tell she was frustrated because now she had to mend my finger before proceeding (it actually really hurt and burned the rest of the time). She picked out a light pink color, which is what I wanted anyway but it was still weird that I didn't get to pick it out myself. The whole appointment, she wouldn't speak to me. She would just grunt and slap my hands around and yell at me to be careful--ya know, after she CUT me with a nail file. It's been about two weeks since then and my nails are already very chipped and the polish is peeling off. Gels usually last about 3-4 weeks for me because I'm pretty careful. Very disappointing. Overall, AWFUL experience. I'm never going back. The only reason I went there was because it was the only place open by time I got off work. If you're looking for a nail salon in Ballston area, Starlight nails does very good quality of work and are friendly. I would recommend them over Coatroom anyway. read more

Two stars because I didn't actually have anything done here. I stopped in on the fly thinking I would get a quick manicure, but there wasn't a spa services menu. Nor was there a sign saying what services are offered. When I asked for a spa menu, I was quoted the cost of a spa manicure. When I asked for a list of services and fees, I was told that it was in the store computer and on their website. I whipped out my phone to check and found nothing like what I was looking for. I just walked out. The lack of transparency was enough to turn me away. Nobody was mean or anything, but I like to see what my options (1) are, and (2) what they cost. I have given this place FAR too many chances. Do NOT go to Dianne if you do decide to go here. I specifically asked for Tracy today and got Dianne instead (???) and she is rushed, rough, and does not do a good job compared to Tracy. On another occasion with the same person, I specifically asked for Bubble Bath by OPI and was given a horrible whiteish nude color and had to go back and get it fixed. Let me preface my review by saying that the ladies of the salon are very nice and did not once make me feel uncomfortable. Their customer service, although good, cannot make up for the terrible job however. I paid over $30 for a gel mani that looks like a bad paint job. I can't even take it off because it's gel and, again, I paid for it. If I didn't have an appointment immediately following y visit I would have asked the technician to fix it. Even so, the job was....really not good. Also, my hands smelled bad for the rest of the day. I'm not sure if it was the gel polish or what, but it was a little embarrassing how permeating the smell was even after washing my hands and using antibacterial several times throughout the day. Do not go here. It was painful. 3 of my toes were bleeding by the end of my pedicure. I said ouch on several occasions and told the technician she was hurting me. She changed nothing and did not even acknowledge that I was bleeding. The technician was also a bit rude. I came with my mother to celebrate her birthday and made an appt for 2 for a mani/pedi. We were on time, but my mother was left waiting for 15 minutes for her pedicure so I was done before her. When I was told to move to manicure station, I asked to wait with my mother and was told this was not an option because of other appointments. I noted that I also had an appt for 2 people and would like to be together. She shrugged her shoulders and pointed to the seat. I could understand this if people were waiting but there were at least 2 technicians just sitting around. When I was finished my technician continued to sit there - no one waiting to see her/no appointments. I was not the only disappointed customer there today...another customer walked out mid-manicure. This was not the relaxing experience I was hoping to share with my mom. With all the other better options of nail salons in Arlington, I would avoid this place. read more

I recently started going to the Coatroom Ballston because my long time nail technician Julie started working there. The atmosphere is very pleasant and clean. The Salon is well lit and they have one of the most immpress array of nail polishes I have come across. The setup of the nail polishes makes it very easy to view and choose a color which is very important to me. The most important thing for me is customer service. So far the staff have been very accomodating and friendly during both of my visits. On the way to my first visit I was very lost and feeling very frustrated as a result. I called the receptionist who not only assisted me but stayed on the phone with me untill I arrived at the location. I call that great customer service. Julie is the only one who has worked on my nails, however if the busyness of the salon is any indication, then I'm sure the rest of the nail technician also do a great job. Now the most important part of my review...... my nail technician Julie. I accidently stumbled on Julie about 4-5 years ago at a hair/nail salon while I was getting my hair done. I decided to get my nails done in the spur of the moment and that's how I met Julie. Since that day I haven't gone to any other nail technician. What I like about Julie is that she is very kind and she always does an amazing job no matter how long it takes between each visit. She always does a thorough job and really takes her time. She also has amazing customer service skills. She always makes me feel comfortable and treats me like a friend rather than just a paying customer. I've literally followed Julie to every salon she has worked at lol and plan on doing so as long she continues to do excellent work. Overall, the Coatroom Ballston is an excellent nail salon and I recommend it to anyone who wants a job well done. I don't know why I keep trying to go back to this place. The only reason I can think is that it is convenient to my office. One time I was double charged on my credit card for a mani/pedi so I was given a gift as reimbursement. Turns out when I went back to use my gift card, they gave me a blank gift card with no money on it! I just decided to give Coatroom a second chance today and booked an appt for a gel manicure. Apparently Coatroom does not honor its appts. I received an email from them saying my appt was rescheduled for 30 minutes later at a time that is not convenient to me. No one tried to contact me to see if the rescheduled time would work for me. They just rescheduled and assumed I will be going when they want me there. Don't require people to make appts if you are not going to honor them. Terrible customer service! Needless to say, I will not be giving them a third chance. read more

This place is located close to all my errands and I decided to stop in and give it a try. I had always seen it in the area and thought it was a super fancy looking place. When I entered, I was greeted for my appointment but still had to wait an additional 10 minutes after getting there to be seen. Their selection is a bit weird, with not that much OPI and only a decent selection of Essie. The salon itself is trendy but I was a bit confused by how they covered the pedicure tub thing with a big plastic almost shower cap looking bag. Whats the point of having nice tubs for your feet if its just in a big bag? The lady who did my nails was kind but there wasn't many questions on how short my nails should be or any additional treatments or issues I wanted to address. I went there to get my SNS removed - I get it, not a service anyone would jump to do since it's a low return, but let's try to be professional here. This was a horrible experience. It was even more disorganized than I'd read. (I'd made an appointment but when I got there a party of about 6 women had just arrived too so everyone was in a frenzy accommodating them.) The manager got pissed at my technician and angrily directed her in front of everyone. The tech in turn got angry at me for having a stiff hand. (Uhh, you try to relax in this place...) The tools they used on me were from a tray, not sterilized and opened in front of me. My technician used her fingernails to scrape off my previous SNS color. The bottle brush of the top coat they use on top of the finished SNS was hardened so they substituted with a non-SNS top coat until they could find another bottle, which was hardened too. The appointment took almost 2 hours when online it says 45. The girl next to me had been sitting at a station for 15 minutes waiting for a manicure before she finally asked my tech why no one had helped her yet.... It was chaos. Don't go here. I'm still looking for a place but this is not it. They're getting 2 stars because some of the staff were nice. read more

I've been there in the past and had great experiences, but after having my finger sliced during a manicure, I never went back. I'm a pianist so I literally can't afford to have my fingers sliced open by a technician during a manicure. Anyway, I was still on their phone list. I got a text today about a discount for my birthday, which is March 31st. When I called and told them that a global pandemic was going on and they should probably not be open per the state's laws, the guy hung up on me. My first time going here.I am visiting from California. The front desk girl was rude . She was talking to the nail technicians about people who buy coupons on groupon and how they forget to tip I overheard. I purchased my standard mani pedi from groupon for $ 40 and I decided to upgrade it to shellac manicure and pedicure. No one explained to me how much the difference would be to upgrade.I got eyebrows done as well.The girl who did the eyebrows was great.The technician who billed me at the end just told me I owe 51$ in addition to the $40.I tipped him $10. It's directly across from Ballston Mall, if that helps you. So anyhoo, I arrived and was greeted immediately.The salon was clean and sleek. They were running a bit behind, so I took time to pick my polish. They carry high end polishes. No OPI here. I picked Deborah Lippman and Butter London colors. I got my nails done first. The gentleman was kind and gentle and did a great job. Next, my toes were up. I liked the fact that they used a plastic lining in the foot tub. My feet needed a lot of love and attention. I opted for the callous removal. I told my nail tech that I was ticklish. She was sure to be firm and that minimized my giggles. My nails and toes came to around $55. It was a pretty good deal and I really enjoyed myself. I'd def come back here when I can spend an afternoon in Arlington. They don't have awesome salons like this in Centreville. read more

The soak off process was much different than I am used to and ended up taking a long time and causing quite a mess. I was asked to pick a shape and a color. The actual manicure was pretty messy and my cuticles are raggedy still. Two hours later... time to pay. They charged me five dollars extra for the almond shape on my natural nails?!! I was floored. This should have been explained in advance. I hate my nails and with parking and the extra per hand fee I ended up still paying $55. The girl with the short boyish cut wasn't helpful when it came to looking for a matching color set. Not only did she achieve the perfect gel mani (exact color combination I had in mind, shape, quality, etc.) but she was also super helpful with touching up a smudged pedi from the previous day.
