I have used Coates very happily for 15 years, caring for many aging Cottonwoods, and have always been really happy with their service, skill and professionalism. However, this year, Crew 1 headed by Jazz, was OUT OF THIS WORLD!! Had I engaged sculptors of the highest skill, keen landscape designers or angels, the results could not have been better.The Mother Tree they restored is a monument to hundreds who hike and bike and ride out nearby. - 22k spent in 2+ years. One tree died under their care; two others are in serious decline but perhaps I myself I can save two decling others; two other trees lost 2/3 of their needles; the Rep Mike told me two years in that he couldn't see the ongoing disease of the faded color because he is colorblind(!) -I have an ongoing issue with a white fir that he claims is improving- I have photos- no one would call this a healthy tree, and the nerd-speak he endlessly delivers about it says *nothing*. I have spent two years believing he can correctly diagnose this tree's core cause of disease and treat it correctly. - The treatment services were repeated twice, sometimes three times. Each time I was billed. - There's no follow up to see if the treatments were effective or if the custoner was satisfied. Notice there are no reviews posted on their website or on Google. - Notice too, the snippy, rude responses from the owner Robert to the negative Yelp reviews. Wait for one to appear here, despite the documentable truth to everything I'm writing. - What does "Guaranteed" mean? Looks fancy in the big blue and gold emblem- it means nothing. No one ever asks. Beware this kind of thing- it's pervasive in many services. - They do not look at water as the first source to diagnose the core cause of any issue; they talk about everything but, and take your time while they wash, rinse, repeat the same non-information. When I repeatedly asked about and spoke of the irrigation being installed and managed poorly, they still did not look at emitters, bubblers, the number of days watered; they didn't notice the massive bermed waterwells at the base of hardy native junipers- I asked about them, and received a non-committal non-answer. Using my own knowledge and suspicion about them, I had the berms removed. The soil was full of fungus. - Based on my own knowledge I also had the wrongly installed emitters removed from the above junipers, and all the other ones. I close the bubblers. I used a two foot moisture meter to monitor the root balls. My trees improved after this, when Coates' 3 fungal sprays did not work. - The pruner employee of one large deciduous tree gave me pushback three times when I gave reasonable feedback/direction- this is client's right-,and if it addles a kid with an attirude, that kid needs training by management to show respect. I highly doubt the attitude would have been directed to a man. When I spoke discretely to the lead, the solution he gave was to pull the employee off the tree, leaving it with deadwood still remaining. - The price came in a bit lower because of time saved, and they told me I "got a good deal". I approved the full price and expected the trees to be fully pruned. No one manages my money but me- this is typical overstepping and patronizing from this comapny. - I chased all scheduling, information, provided endless emails and texts, and accommodated a truly dysfuntional system of billing that burdened me and my bookkeeper. No other service I use has the kind of confusion separating invoicing from proposals/general email conversation. - I've lived in Santa Fe 33 years, and see now that the reason my trees have looked good under their past care is because of my terrific landscapers. My current property is full of easy-keeper native trees, and a few deciduous ones zoned correctly and acclimate well to Zone 6a. There is no reason my trees have required this much effort or cost- most of it was to retreat and treatment that didn't work. - There's zero thinking from this company, or taking a moment to assess the whole, engage in the core issues, do more than expect the client to throw good money after bad, and look at the clients' tremendous effort and interest in her trees- then kick into gear and figure it out. The lack of attention and respect is appallling- and it has nothing to do with new hires, short staffing, or any current issues of challenging times. Management is rude, disorganized, and fails to lead- it shows in the work. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They will take advantage of you, your loyalty, your being new in town or having a new house; then take your money, preening and fussing as they go. This review is to protect the customer, not to punish the service. I do not usually give reviews; the few I've given were 5 stars to support people that deliver on every sinlge aspect of knowledge, business, and professionalism. I found someone wonderful instead, who talked water with ease an no attitude. As it happens, they are less expensive. When people get a negative review, some owners lash out- this shows a lack of class and reflects poorly on the common sense and integrity of the owner. And- full disclosure in advance, my last meeting with the sales rep resulted- absolutelt- in my telling him to get off my property in no uncertain terms for the hot air and wasting my time *again*. My family did business with Coates for many years. When I went to drop off my contract, they had posted several obnoxious memes on their office door. They lost my business. Yes they have a right to be offensive but we will no longer use them. I'd give them no stars. read more

The best part was how much time he spent giving me advice and ensuring I don't waste money doing unnecessary work. He must have stayed around an hour I would hire and trust this company to do any service they provide. Called Coates to do an anti-fungal treatment on my Catalpa as a protective measure, and also some pruning and tree removal. A service person came out and told me they didn't see any need for the fungal treatment. 3 weeks later, it is being destroyed by fungus and no one has showed up to prune or remove trees yet. (To be fair, they offered me a discount for "anytime service" meaning they would come when there was an opening in the schedule, but led me to believe it wouldn't be that long.) When I called Coates to complain and get the fungal situation fixed, the service person was stoic, did not apologize and only offered me $20 off a fungal treatment when I said I should not pay full price. I canceled the tree pruning and removal so they've lost $850 worth of my business. read more

Coates is a great tree service. I have used them 3 times now with a wonderful job every time now. They did the permitting for the street closure, twice because we got rained out. They were extremely careful with my new roof, roped and lowered every branch. Did a fabulous job, were friendly and took the time to cut one Last branch for me. That means they took the time to ask me if I was satisfied before they packed up. It was a rather long day and they still did a good job with clean up, I was kind of tired just from watching! Had an estimate done by Mr Coates who determined that anti-fungal treatment for a tree is needed, in addition to the pruning and trimming of the dead branches. Came up to an extremely high estimate, but their availability seems fine so I agreed. Then they didn't show up for the pruning job! No cancellation call, no warning, no attempt to redirect a crew do do the job within the available window for us or at least same day. Excuses mumbled not including an apology, instead something along the lines: "we go to these jobs, and then these folks ask for more work than initially planned...so we drop people from the schedule". Asked why they didn't call to inform us of the cancellation the answer from John and Robert was basically "things happen, no big deal". Pretty shady business practices. Lessons learned: read reviews, ask the gardening community (from which I received similar feedback for this outfit when described my experience with them), and always have in the back of your mind that there just might be a reason as to why some business has ample availability to perform a service when others are booked solid. read more

I called Coates 6 weeks ago to give me a quote, Mike had an appointment in 3 weeks, no problem as it was busy season, he gave me a quote through email but when I wrote back to ask questions and get the other quote for another job his email replied that my email was "forwarded on to Mike"? Days went by Mike answered then sent new quote coming from my question about toxicity in my yard from spraying. I got the quote which needed to me signed and sent back to Coates before they would schedule. Have not heard from them 6 weeks out!!!! I think my patience has worn thin and will call another service. If they are overworked, maybe they should hire more folks. read more

I just had a horrific experience with Coates Tree Service. A three man crew came out to trim my 2 cottonwood trees on the same day a good friend of mine had to be picked up from the hospital post surgery and I had to take her home and take care of her overnight. So, I left the crew right after they started the job and told them to please shut the gate when they were done. I stopped by the house the next day to change and head into town, but didn't notice any problems until I returned with my friend and we went out to look at the yard. It's then that we were both shocked to see the large bush by one of the cottonwoods had been destroyed. Part of it was severed and split totally off, leaving a large gap where the coyote fence was exposed (and it hadn't been before) and the rest was bent down to the ground. It was in terrible shape. I called Coates the next day and they came out and took a look and said they were shocked by the condition of the bush, too. They promised to trim both my bushes and take care of some elms in my yard to make up for the damage. Well, today Robert Coates showed up late and asked me to look at the damaged bush. We went back to see it and he immediately accused me of having cut the bush myself. He had a photo the crew sent him that showed the cut and split trunk and he claimed it was cut before they started cutting the tree (which was impossible since I was present to watch them cut down a few branches and was uncomfortable because they were hacking off some healthy branches with lots of leaves) since there was still some dead wood on the cottonwood in the photo and some tools on the ground. (Interesting they only took a photo of that bush since that's the thing that was damaged and they took it from across the yard and not close up.) Then Robert accused me of lying. I tried to defend myself, since I wasn't lying and have witnesses to the condition of the bush before the crew came out, but he wouldn't listen to me. He was so belligerent and unreasonable, I had to ask him to leave because of the way he was treating me. It was such a painful experience, I would never use Coates again. I just got off the phone with my son, who knows the condition of my yard and who had used Coates in the past and he said he'd never use or recommend Coates either. We asked their tree guy, Mike, to come out and look at our browning trees. Mike was exactly on time, he explained to us about needle drop and that this was normal growth and pruning of the trees. No charge, no pressure sale, just educated us. We will absolutely call Coates if we have any other tree concerns. Good people. So refreshing. read more

Coates sent a team of three guys to trim off the dead top halves of six of our tall Chinese elms. They did a great job in the time budget they estimated. The guys were very pleasant and responsive to my suggestions as the project progressed. I highly recommend them. read more

Michael, the arborist came out to help me understand why trees were dying that had been next to trees that had been removed in a thinning project on the forested property next to mine. He was so helpful and knowledgeable, and was able to tell me all the issues the "leave trees" had developed. It is good to know there is a resource like Michael in this town. read more

I have a 60 year old pear tree with fire blight. When I noticed this in May I called Coates to assess. They did, and wrote up a nearly $500 estimate to treat it as well as take down a few very small trees and very lightly trim one other. That seemed rather high, but what do I know: I was not sure what was involved, plus I was desperate (love the pear tree so much) so I okayed it. They came out two days later, and spent approx a half hour here. They removed a few diseased branches from the pear tree and sprayed it with antibiotics. Aside from that, they ran their chainsaw for a few minutes to complete the other work. They cleaned it all up very well and left. I felt satisfied at the time, but the fire blight came back very quickly, and now I'm doing a different treatment that is working much better (and much cheaper). Also, they overcharged me when they sent the invoice, and so I had to address that. Overall they were okay. Not sure if I'll use them again, as I was underwhelmed, and the primary issue I called them to treat wasn't successfully treated, nor did they follow up. Also, I personally prefer an arborist who avoids toxic chemicals, but Coates uses them liberally and without apology. read more

Husband took time off from work to meet tree guy at our house for an estimate. No one showed up, and my husband went back to work after waiting around for half an hour. Then, 40 minutes past our appointment time, the guy calls and says he mixed up his schedule. He offered to come in another 20 minutes. Didn't even apologize. Would have been nice (not to mention basic courtesy) if he had called at the time of the appointment to tell us he wasn't showing up. read more

this is the worst so-called "service" provider i have ever encountered in santa fe! they charge a fortune for their time - and do not deliver - their workers do not do jobs as requested, and when asked to return to fix them, they will not without recharging over again. no supervision on the job - just laborers working without oversight. three of my 15-20 year old trees are dying because their arborist (who never returns phone calls even when he says he will) told me three years ago (!) and every year since, to "remove the small dead stuff and leave them be" and for 3 years he has looked at them and i have suggested spraying and feeding and he has said it is not necessary - now they are dying!!! the phone operators are rude and do not listen at all - they lie and cover their lies by having you talk to another person, and it is simply a deplorable, rip off company here for so long only because they (were once) the only tree company in santa fe. stay away!!! they are ripoffs!!!! just check out the other bad reviews here - they should be sent to jail for their lies and rip off rates and the aggravation we get from talking to these creeps. read more

Coates Tree Service came to our home and said they could not spray until March 2016. In March they came and sprayed and when the tree got it's leaves, the problem was/is still there. We have called them 3 or 4 times, gone to their office and they will not call us back. It is disgraceful how they take your money and avoid you after. Do not let this happen to you. read more
