I was also having to drain the tank about once a year and replace the bottom element as our house did not have a softener when we moved in, so it had a lot of calcium carbonate in the bottom. I called Bob Garret Services for an estimate about a new hot water heater with a mixing valve. Never knew that a mixing valve can increase your hot water volume by over 50%. Lawrence Hancock came over, checked everything out, and gave me a quote. He was very detailed in explaining things and low-pressure (no pun intended), and obviously very intelligent. Even though the cost was a bit surprising, I decided to go for it as this was the best water heater on the market. Lawrence came over the next day with new water heater, mixing valve, and thermal expansion tank (needed for to prevent pressure buildup in closed plumbing system and protect the well pump). He got everything installed, not to mention re-plumbing a few questionable joints on my water softener, anchoring some existing copper pipes to the block wall, both at no extra charge. Here's the kicker...not only can my wife use her jacuzzi now, but we have increased water pressure AND our 2-year-old water softener is working MUCH better. I'm extremely satisfied with Bob Garrett Service, not to mention with Lawrence especially. Great job guys. One less thing to worry about now.

I then called Carter's Heating & Cooling, who put in our HVAC when we built 10 years ago here at the lake. It turns out they also ran the propane line to the house. Greg Carter was very responsive, and Jamie came out first thing the next morning. After doing an initial check of things, he disassembled the cooktop and found the leak at the regulator. Interestingly, we had a local appliance repair out here in 2019 when we smelled propane at the cooktop. While I don't know if they ever corrected the issue or not, Carters did! I have always been impressed with Carter's and highly recommend them if you want things done right.

We signed up for the for the maintenance program with Wooldridge almost immediately after buying…read moreour house. Having two brand new units, we wanted to keep them in good condition for a long time. At first this seemed to be a great value. The technicians came twice a year, kept things clean, were always kind and professional, and there were no mechanical issues. About three years in, I was upstairs while the technician was working on the downstairs unit. I heard a loud clang from two floors away. However, when he left for the day he reported no issues. The next day the unit started to have problems. Long story short, after multiple visits from other Wooldridge employees, I ended up paying $1000 to have it fixed. No one would admit that the most likely cause was the technician having just worked on the unit, not the unit going bad by chance at that exact time (when it was only three years old). I almost dropped Wooldridge then, but eventually I was able to speak with a manager who was kind enough to listen to my side of the story, and they gave me a small break on the price. Since they were willing to work with me, we decided to give them another chance. Recently, three years later, one of the maintenance techs discovered that the attic drain pan was cracked. (I'm still wondering how the others that came before him hadn't noticed, as it didn't look like a new issue.) This required another $1200 to swap the pan out with a new one. Later that day, there was a knocking coming from the unit. (Again, I'm wondering how the installers left and didn't flag that.) Another tech came out and fixed that issue, and even did some extra work on the drain line. However, while doing that he also spilled water in the attic, which leaked through the ceiling and made a nice round spot in the hallway. To their credit, Wooldridge took ownership of the issue and had a contractor take care of the cosmetics at no cost to me. But at this point, I have given them too much money and received too much trouble in return for me to continue doing business with them. The maintenance program alone is very hit or miss, depending on who you get. Some do not even clean the units (which is a large part of why we were using them).

Lately though we have been increasingly disappointed. In an apparent search for effeciency, customer service is slipping. Case in point, their new automated service notification system that supposedly provides you information on when to expect a technician to arrive. We have a service contract and a tech was supposed to come out to inspect the system to make sure all was working well. First, sometime today is not helpful. We have busy lives and other companies at least give you a reasonable window. Second, when we were finally provided an arrival time (between 12:30 and 1:30) and confirmed it, we waited for over 2 hours after that and never got an update or saw a technician. Texts to the automated system generated a form response that the tech was delayed...obvious and not helpful...maybe provide a revised ETA? Third, we finally called the office and canceled the appointment (it was about 4) and said we'd call back to reschedule. No apologies for the inconvenience...nothing. I am hesitant to reschedule and risk a replay of a wasted day due to questionable customer service. Last winter we had techs come out under the service contract to do the annual check up of the heating system. When we asked the technicians to show us the proper way to drain the boiler, they didn't know. Go back to a people run and focused approach. That was why we stuck with Davis so long in the first place.
