I was relieved to find others were more generous, but I can't say I had $25 worth of wine that night. Also, being first-up was easy, then as time went on, long lines in a crush of people. One thing I did like was getting to see some shops downtown that I wasn't aware of. Some people might really love the whole experience--but, for someone like me, I'd rather just wander around freely and try different places on my own little wine jaunt. The Downtown Wine Walk is an annual event and fundraiser for Downtown Bellingham. For an admission fee (this year it was $25) participants are given a souvenir glass to take to various locations and get a pour of their fave red, white, rose, or sparkling wine. It's a fantastic chance to stroll the streets of downtown with friends, experience some new businesses, and (of course!) enjoy tasty wine. This year was my first year participating and I had such a great time! I even found a bunch of businesses I hadn't ever visited, and ended up buying a few bottles of the featured wines (they are all available for sale at Vinostrology for easy one-stop post-event shopping). The event does get quite busy and doesn't last long, and lines were VERY long by the time it got going, so word to the wise: start early!

For $10, you are presented a selection of 6 wines - 1 white, 4 red, and 1 red or dessert wine. The selections are presented in cute carafes, and you are free to choose one of their lovely outdoor picnic tables with a great view of the area, or sit indoors if that's more your speed. It looked like there was some charcuterie available for purchase, but based on the increasing number of folks that pulled up throughout the afternoon, there was a strong trend of BYOS (bringing your own snacks). If you're on the island, definitely check these guys out. They have other wines offered at the Doe Bay Wine Co, but stick to local and try the Orcas Project. What they are doing with all of the different wine makers helping make different wines for the Orcas Project is brilliant and provides everyone an opportunity to shine.

Rudest owner on the island…read more If you enjoy being barked at by an agitated dog while the owner mocks your concerns, this is the place for you. We went out of our way to visit this winery, only to be met with total hostility. The owner's refusal to leash his incredibly obnoxious dog is irresponsible, but his attitude toward us was the real dealbreaker. My mother in law has been bit in the past, and was so uncomfortable. Plenty of other spots on Orcas Island actually value their customers, skip this one. The dog chased our car on the way out.
