Very helpful and professional - I had fun at the session and came away with a lot of useful information for my ultramarathon training!

I first met Gareth more than 20 years ago while preparing for my first Ironman triathlon. Gareth provided both me and my wife (then girlfriend) with blood lactate testing and training plans to not only finish our races but to meet our finishing-time goals. Fast forward nearly 20 years and we sought out Gareth again to provide blood lactate testing for our daughter, a competitive youth rower, to help her meet her goals of rowing in college. Once again, Gareth's evidence-based training recommendations proved incredibly helpful. His decades of experience are invaluable to any endurance athlete, whether you are a newb or a seasoned (i.e. old) athlete. read more

I started working with Gareth over a decade ago and then took a break for a few years to "retire" and only run. When I re-entered multisport racing in 2021, I reached out to Gareth to help set up a program and help me hit my goals. My fitness keeps going up and my times keep going down - when you get to hit a new half marathon PR 15 years after your last one - you know your coach is doing something right. His testing and programs have me training smarter and more efficiently than I could do on my own read more

Coach Gareth has guided me through the most transformative first year of Ironman training and together we have witnessed monumental improvements in my performance. He is there not only when I have success but also when I encounter injuries and setbacks. He's always been knowledgable, patient and encouraging. Coach Gareth is the best resource available if you want to get into running or improve your fitness if you're already running. Coach Gareth is awesome! I'm new to endurance racing (training for an ultra), and I signed up for a session with him to both assess my form and get a baseline for my lactate threshold. The whole process was incredibly smooth and informative. Gareth was very generous with his time -- answering all of my questions and then some during our session. He then follow-up with an in-depth report that was fantastic. Endurance training can be a complicated process, but Gareth distilled it to the major points. I feel much more confident in what to work on regarding my stride. I also feel much more informed about how to improve as an endurance athlete. Can't recommend a session with him enough -- it's a great use of time and money for someone just getting into endurance training. read more

Did lactate testing with Coach Gareth and not only was it an easy process, he gave me a much more accurate update on my training zones so I can train much more efficiently! read more

Where to begin....I have been running since 2006. I did some training courses with charitable foundations in groups. I've followed marathon apps to ready myself for 26.2 miles. In fact, I've probably purchased and downloaded every app out there. I've never been a super fast runner so always hesitated calling myself a "runner", an "athlete, etc but I run and workout. My training would always be lacking prior to a marathon. Heck the one ultra marathon I did I only did one 12-mile training session. All these miles and all this effort with running and I'm getting slower. This got me insanely frustrated. I was getting ready to do my 3rd NYC marathon this past November and took a stand. I told myself I would not just make it across the finish line. I wanted to really push myself to a whole new PR. I googled and read everything that came up about running trainers but when I read about Coach Gareth I knew he was going to make the difference I had been so desperately searching for. I get on the phone with him and he starts talking "lactate testing", etc. He motivated me so much just in that conversation I met him the next day instead of putting it off. I started with Coach Gareth in July of 2022. He has been life changing. The knowledge he has behind the science is incredible. A man who truly, truly knows the science and form of endurance training. I AM AN ATHLETE! I AM A RUNNER! I've never felt better about my running now that I found the amazing Coach Gareth. Look no further for your Coach. If you want to improve then call him. I trust him implicitly! He's not only the most knowledgeable but his coaching style could not be more perfect. He is a huge support. I am a work in progress and I'm so excited to see where I go. I'm getting older but I'm getting faster and fitter! Thank you Coach! read more

I've been working with Coach Gareth for over 5 years, and he is fantastic! He converted me from a couch potato to an Ironman All World Athlete. His knowledge, attention to detail, and genuine interest in my well-being keeps me motivated, injury-free, and in shape. If your goal is to get in shape and perform at your absolute best, Gareth is your coach! read more

Coach Gareth - Lactate testing with Coach Gareth - Trainers Near Me

I'm signed up for the NYC marathon in November. While I'm not a "competitive" athlete, I am a competitive athlete. I also love the science of sports. I went in to TRIO today for first time ever blood lactate testing and stride analysis. I was super impressed by Gareth's easy manner and ability to explain everything in an easy to understand, straightforward way. The advice he gave me on my stride created an immediate improvement. I'm already looking forward to going back for my follow-up testing AFTER I put in some more training! read more

I really enjoyed my session with Gareth. I'm recovering from a running injury, and I was looking for someone to assess my gait and enhance my running form. Gareth helped me with this and more. I have some specific running drills and strength training exercises to do as my next steps, as well as clear direction on how far and fast to run as I'm healing. Also, Gareth gave me simple tips to help my running form and lessen the stress on my hips. What I particularly like about Gareth is that he doesn't ascribe to a particular running form, like "forefoot running" or "midstrike running". Rather, he targets tips to my individual style with a few key guidelines. Thanks Gareth. read more

Done my blood lactate tests here for bike and running! Nice, friendly and professional approach with almost instantly available results! Will be coming back in about 9 weeks! Coach Gareth goes above and beyond answering your questions and helping you to optimize your training. This was the case with me. I loved it and will be a regular here. No doubt! Highly recommending! read more

Just have to update... since getting my LT zones and planning my training around them, my fitness has improved incredibly. I got first in my age group for the first time in September at the Malibu Classic, and finished my first official Ironman in Arizona in 11 hours, 46 minutes. I'm super excited to keep improving, and I know if I keep following the plan that I will, because it's definitely worked out so far! read more

Gareth will help you reach your athletic goals with as little pain and suffering possible. I've been training with him for the past 5 years, and each year have made landmark accomplishments in triathlon. His coaching style is far from that of a football coach or a drill sergeant, but you still never want to let him down in your training. Always supportive of your goals, and congratulations upon completion of your A-races. If you are a triathlete and have 1K to spend on something to make you faster, you should see Gareth. Upgrading your Ultegra gruppo to Dura Ace may save you 302 grams in weight and increase your Power/wt ratio by 1%, but one season of lactate testing and coaching plans may increase your Power/wt ratio by at least 5-10%. In summary, Gareth's practical and technical expertise and resume in triathlon and multisport, along with his amiable personality, have made my coaching experience with Gareth wonderful. Highly recommend for beginners to elite alike, for triathlon or any of its constituents therein. read more

Professional in his approach, on time and really into what he does, Gareth allowed me to understand much better my lactate threshold levels during the test which took about 45 minutes. And proposed a concrete training plan for the coming weeks to improve performance. Also, during our first session he performed a video footage at different running speeds, and spotted bio-mechanical issues on the spot, helping make improvements almost immediately. Very convincing package, highly recommended for runners and endurance athletes who want to progress to their next level. read more

Gareth was very friendly and easy to talk to -- and man does he know his stuff. He's been doing it for 20-25 years and has everything down to an exact science and works with you to help you make your goal. I got a lactate blood test done, where he also took a video of my running and set me up with a plan to get to my Ultra Running goals with how to improve my stride and overall endurance. Gareth has been my triathlon coach for over seven years now. Just had RMR (resting metabolic rate0 and VO2 max testing done. I wanted testing because at age 61, I thought that my metabolic rate was low because I can't eat anything without creeping up even when I was carefully tracking calories in and out. As a physician, I understand exercise physiology and I was impressed that Eric, the technician, was very knowledgeable about the testing, physiology and what it means. He explained everything to me right after the test and showed me all the graphs. I found the testing very helpful to establish training zones, anaerobic thresholds, fat vs carb calories burned and my VO2 max. I have been successful in self training and the testing confirmed that with a good VO2 max for age and got ratio of fat burning. I plan to continue to self train so I can't comment on Coach Gareth's training program. But I think that the testing is helpful to know where you are at and to monitor progress. I was confident in the accuracy of the tests and the fees were very reasonable. Gareth was prompt in getting back to me with emails and the testing room was great and well set up. read more

Coach Gareth rocks. Great testing, easy process, I highly recommend. Don't hesitate to try.

An incredibly useful test. My estimations about my heart rate zones were hilariously far off, and now I can train with actual scientific data about how my body works. Highly recommend. read more

I've had a great experience working with Coach Gareth over the last few months. I have used Coach Gareth for both testing (bike and run) and a custom training program. So I'll split my comments between the two: 1) Testing: The lactate run and bike tests provide a great baseline of data that you can very easily incorporate into training. The run test made it clear that I was running too hard too often and the bike test just the reverse. In addition to the functional benefits, the experience was surprisingly pleasant. Coach Gareth is warm and provides helpful tidbits throughout. 2) Plan: After completing the tests, I decided to have Coach Gareth pull together a training plan as well. The experience has been great thus far. It takes a lot of the guess work out of training and provides a long-term training map in addition to day/day workouts. The training plan is much better than anything I've pieced together on my own from the myriad plans found in books and across the web. I think there are three basic advantages. First the plan is custom to you, your goals and fitness. Second, it's flexible. Coach Gareth adapts workouts on the fly as work, life, injury and so on get in the way of training. Third, it comes with a bevy of other training tools, tips and articles that have helped with my consistency. read more

I went to Gareth to get a blood lactate testing. First, I was very impressed by the facilities-- everything was clean and new. The testing itself went very well, and Gareth used his experience and knowledge to explain the results of my test in a clear manner. As an athlete, successful current coach, and trainer, Gareth is qualified to provide expert advice. His analysis of my test results is useful and perhaps essential for me as I plan a training regimen for the summer. read more

Gareth was great! His approach is simple and straightforward. His blood lactate test is unequivocally the best first step any aspiring athlete should take in order to train effectively and efficiently. He dispelled some training ideas I had and confirmed some others. Also I like that Gareth is local and has worked with many of the best local cyclists. Highly recommended! read more

Gareth is the man. Very professional and really know his stuff. When I started with Gareth I could not run at ant speed with a heart rate below 183. With his coaching and running at the proper levels I have become much more competitive in my age group. read more

First testing session ever for vo2max and lactate acid, an truly eye opening experience. Coach Gareth had a first class setup and didn't just provide numbers and figures. Fantastic experience. Wanted to test my oxygen use in athletic performance and Coach Gareth had a great setup, very well organized, super equipment and facility. I was connected to coach Gareth through a colleague and a friend of my wife. I have run a few marathons and have had trouble after the 15 mile mark and this friend told us about how coach performed a lactate threshold test to assist with his training and performance. I met up with coach who was super professional and extremely knowledgeable. The test took about 1 hour to complete and was very thorough. Coach Gareth provided me with extremely detailed results and some training tips to make my marathon efforts more successful and to help me focus on my pace times. Needless to say I just completed my 3rd LA marathon and his advice helped me conquer various sections of the course where in previous years I had to walk because I burned myself out to early in the race. This year I was able to run the entire course with the exception of about 3 mins, one of which I stopped to talk to my wife and give her a kiss. Coach Gareth is amazing and I will be hiring him to be my coach for the next two marathons I am running this year. read more

I completed blood lactate testing bike and run with Coach Gareth. Free valet parking starts what is a first class experience. Facility is very clean and well maintained. Gareth's style is somewhat laid back but he is always throwing out tidbits to tweak training as the test continues. The data report was well written with very specific direction on the kinds of workouts I need to be doing. I recommend him highly! read more

I started working with Gareth about three years ago when I realized that my level of training really merited a more precise knowledge of what the heck is going on in my body. His testing, and subsequent explanation of the testing results, gave me a better handle on a) what was happening and b) what I needed to fine tune in order to meet my goals. As always, his bloodletting is as painless as it is sterile. I will go back in another 9-12 weeks to see if his suggestions allow me to raise my top-end of biological efficiency. If I'm spending hours a week training, it would be absurd to not know the very metrics that will prove I'm getting in better shape. In short, Gareth helps me train smarter..... read more

Coach Gareth is the best! Coach Gareth has been doing my lactate testing for many years now. Always a professional experience. Coach Gareth has helped me take my triathlon training to the next level with his scientific, objective approach. The perfectly executed blood lactate testing I did with him for both the run & bike provided trustworthy, valid info on which my training has been based. As long as I stay within his guidelines, I never question my training plans b/c I know there's a rational approach behind each workout. I've also appreciated his consistently positive, straight-forward attitude....one can tell he not only knows his stuff, but he also enjoys the process of training athletes. I've recently done both bike VO2 max/lactate testing and run blood lactate testing. Each step of the process was professional and easy, from the parking at the gym to receiving and using the results. The parking is free with validation, and right next to the gym. The gym is beautiful, clean, and has full locker facilities that I had access to before and after the test. During the process, Gareth led me through the tests, telling me what they were doing and why, as well as giving feedback and encouragement throughout the test. He then quickly sent the results, along with analysis and advice for incorporating the data into a training plan. I was able to send the results to my coach who is using them to make my workout plan as efficient as possible. As a pro triathlete-hopeful with a time-consuming job, this is super important to know we are training efficiently and effectively. I'll keep going back to Gareth for my future retests to confirm the process. read more

I have been working with Coach Gareth for more than two years. I began training with him after my first year of Triathlon, during which I was coaching myself. Gareth has performed both lactate and VO2 testing on me, as well as having written an extensive training program for me, resulting in a drastic increase in my fitness levels this past two years. I have competed in several Olympic distance races, several 70.3 races, and my first full Ironman at the end of this season. I have observed fitness gains both in testing and in my racing performance with several podium finishes over the last two years, placing high in 70.3 age group rankings and placing very well in my first full distance race. I qualified for the U.S.A.T. Nationals in Olympic distance, held in Burlington, Vermont, and placed well considering I was competing against the nation's best. To top it all off, I am in one of the most competitive age groups: Men 40-44. This could not have been done without Coach Gareth and his knowledge and experience. He is truly a great coach! He is there when things are not going well - he modifies programs when I get hurt - he is there when I have questions and been to some of the races to watch his athletes compete and cheer us on! I have learned so much from Coach Gareth in the past two years about my body and fitness in general. I know how the training and testing work, he is VERY thorough in explaining the tests results with me and, because of that, I know why it is so important to stick to the program he writes for me. I look forward to another year of working with Coach Gareth, watching my fitness levels increase and my enjoyment and passion for the triathlon grow. I am a very proud member of the TRIO group, I sport the TRIO logo at all the races and love hearing people yell "TRIO" when I fly by!
