I had never heard of neuroscience health coaching before speaking with Alyssa. After speaking with Alyssa about her methodology, we decided to sign up for some training sessions for my son who struggles with ADHD. Alyssa quickly picked up on the parts of my son's brain that may be weak and need support. Then, she taught my son specific exercises to strengthen the parts of his brain that needed help. She even discovered that my son's breathing is not ideal and that he needs to develop his diaphragm. I didn't think that I would ever go down the personal training path. Seeing a bit about Alyssa's program on her web site led me to want to learn more. Prior experiences had resulted in scenarios where the more I pushed, the more harm I eventually seemed to do to my body. I also knew my body performance was highly correlated to various sensory input (lighting, temperature, sound levels, etc). While I was keenly aware of this relationship, I really hadn't discovered the right recipe (from the right Master Chef) for optimal performance, general body strength and flexibility, and just all around feeling well throughout the week. TLDR: I've been training with Alyssa for about 3 months now and I'm already noticing many great changes. SHE IS AMAZING. I had a hard time finding the right trainer because I went through two big surgeries: scoliosis (spine) and meniscus tear (knee). And I really needed someone to be super attentive, careful and also thoughtful of the exercises he or she will teach me. I was honestly a little stubborn and scared because I felt like all the personal trainers I've searched are hardcore/spartan style, but Alyssa made time to do a free 1 hour consultation and she asked very specific questions (which is great because she truly wants to understand each client's needs) and also is an amazing listener. I stumbled across Alyssa when yelping "best personal trainer" in Mountain View. I was feeling pretty bleh about myself and wanted to kick start my butt into gear. I didn't really know what I was going to get / what to expect when searching for a personal trainer (all I knew is I didn't want anyone screaming at me) but I'm SO GLAD I found Alyssa! When I read all her rave reviews, I had to learn more. I felt from her reviews, her site, and her instagram page that I found she was exactly the type of person I'd want to work with. I filled out the "getting in touch" section and the rest was history. In a very short amount of time, Alyssa knew me and all my quirks / nuances. You can immediately tell she is passionate about her clients / what she does and I appreciated the support I had when working with her. She would always bring up things I'd like / benefit from in our sessions and send over email recaps / recommendations which I greatly appreciated. I will add to the plethora of other 5-star reviews that Alyssa already has. A little bit of background on me & my fitness history: I've never been athletic in my life. I never played sports in high school and only started having a concept of "exercise" senior year of college. I mainly just did 30min on the elliptical every now and then. After college, I explored various group fitness classes, yoga classes, Bikini Body Guide, etc. I could never stick to anything and developed thoughts like "I have to exercise like X" or "I need to eat like Y". I even tried personal training but stopped doing that a few months in. After being in a pattern of this for 5 years and tired of not "feeling healthy", I found Alyssa over Yelp & read her philosophies online. I then chatted with her on the phone, and it was clear to me that Alyssa was different from trainers who just wanted you to sweat as much as possible and stick to "healthy eating". From February through June of last year, I trained with Alyssa twice a week. I did not have a specific goal in mind like weight loss or being able to deadlift X pounds, but I did want to develop a healthy relationship with eating and moving my body. Alyssa took me through exercises based on what my body was feeling that week and taught me that everyone's bodies and lives are different. She focused on not only physical health, but also mental and spiritual health. After training with her for 4-5 months, I decreased our training to just once a week because I was confident I could program and do my own workout the other day of the week. I worked with her in this capacity from June till December. I moved up to SF this January and haven't trained with Alyssa since last year, but this is the first time in my life that I feel fully equipped to regularly exercise and eat in a way that's moderate. I can't explain how freeing it is to not feel like I have to match anyone else's expectations but feel like I have something I can do for the rest of my life. I now do strength training twice a week (including many tips to warm up my body that Alyssa taught me) and yoga once a week. Meeting Alyssa has been a gift that I will have for the rest of my life. I don't usually have a habit of sitting down to write reviews but she really is the best so I wanted to share that with everyone and anyone looking for an incredible wellness coach. Before I met her, I didn't know what a wellness coach did and honestly, I didn't think I needed one. I was completely wrong. Alyssa has helped change my relationship with food, dieting and my body. I used to use a variety of dieting methods like calorie counting, Paleo, Keto or intermittent fasting. I was very strict on what I would allow myself to eat and what I would not eat. But strong cravings would eventually kick in and I would cave. Or I would become super ravenous on one particular night and eat everything that I deemed as off limits. Then Monday comes and I'm back to eating only protein and veggies and the cycle continues. I thought I would basically have to be on some sort of diet for my whole life. And some small part of me was okay with that. But life is so much better when I'm not constantly thinking about food, calories, the scale, or what I can't eat! I trained with Alyssa for most of 2012 and would have continued training with her if I didn't move away from Palo Alto. She is extremely attentive and knows exactly how hard to push you without making you feel sick afterwards. Alyssa will also make sure your form is solid. The workouts were constantly varying so I never got bored. One of the things I really liked about Alyssa's training style are her post-workout followups. She is great at following up after workouts to see how I am feeling and also provided helpful feedback on my diet when I showed her my food log. Even when I was traveling for work, she would email me to see how I was feeling. I'm 36 now and have never been in better shape my whole life. As a software engineer who sits in front of the computer most of the day, I can't say there is a single other investment I've made in my life so far that makes me feel better about myself on a daily basis than training with Alyssa. Even though I've moved to San Francisco and have a new trainer there, if I ever have to spend time in Palo Alto for more than a few days for business I will try to schedule a training session with her. It's taken me a while to write this review because putting words together for a woman and coach this caring and compassionate for what she does is a hard task. So let's begin... Alyssa is one of those people you wish you could chat with daily. Not only is she knowledgeable in nutrition, form, functional movement, but she's fueled by a passion to help others succeed in becoming best friends in their own life. I worked with Alyssa for a short period of time to help me transition from old fitness habits into redefining new ones. Being a new budding health coach myself, I'm really particular about the people I choose to work with and support my life with as well. She not only helped me to become more intentional about my movement, but she helped me recognize my own personal abilities, experience, and knowledge; something you don't get from any other personal trainers. I love Alyssa's wellness coaching style for many reasons, off the bat I have to say how I appreciate that she incorporates mental health/self-care resources. I am a very anxious person, and a lot of the techniques and knowledge she offers in her guidebook are now practices that I have incorporated into my daily routine to check in with myself and really keep track of my emotions so I don't feel like they are controlling me. With that said, instead of putting all the focus on physical appearance or just diet and nutrition in order to look and feel great about yourself, Alyssa's approach is super relevant for those out their who are really trying to make life changes that last. Its nice to know and have confidence that she really cares and wants you to be able to get to know yourself and your body in new ways than you did before. Secondly, she understands that everyone's health journey doesn't have to look the same and takes the time to learn your specific health needs rather then just giving you a "one size fits all answer". I found Alyssa through an interview series I had registered for and was immediately intrigued by her work. As a neuroscientist and someone who has had to compete physically at an elite level, I was very drawn to her approach. I will admit that I was a unique client in the sense that I came into the program with a high level of self awareness and knowledge of the brain and nervous system; however despite coming in with a lot of knowledge I got a lot out of the program. With Alyssa's guidance I was able to customize the program to meet my needs and ultimately was able to get external permission to do less. I started the program extremely worn out and fatigued, but after only a few short months I was able to see incredible changes. Alyssa has been a total game changer for me! I have worked with other coaches in the past and have even competed in 2 bikini competitions. After each of my past experiences, I always left feeling more lost and like I was missing a piece of myself. When I think of Alyssa, I always have positive thoughts. She's supportive, understanding, listens without judgement and follows through. She is the first and only trainer I've ever worked with that made me more aware of my body--not just how to move, but how it works, what it likes and not just succumbing to the idea of what you're "supposed" to do because it's healthy. Her philosophies really vibe with me because she works individually on the person, not from a cookie-cutter format. Her philosophies are sustainable and healthy, not for short-term fixes. Alyssa has had a profound impact on my perception of my abilities. Before working with Alyssa, the confidence I had in certain movements and aspects of my day was questionable at best. I felt that I was living a 'good enough' life and initially just wanted to learn to further optimize the movements I already knew and were comfortable with.
