I have to say that I never write reviews but I will probably start to now. I first visited Clyde's Cupcakes when he opened in Exeter. I was among the first customers during his first week open. I thought the cupcakes were a bit bland and very dry. But I wanted to support the business and I love cupcakes. I tried it again a few months later. My experience was the same. Then, the cupcakes were big. I tried the Exeter Bakery about 3 more times and I had increasingly bad experiences. It was Clyde himself then when he first opened who was impatient, borderline angry (it seemed to me) and not very welcoming. And the cupcakes were very dry, often very cold, very hard and bland. I stopped going. Yesterday, when I walked downtown Portsmouth, I stopped at the Clyde Cupcake Truck. I had seen it before often in the last year or so and passed right by. Yesterday, I thought to myself 'I am going to give this another shot - maybe things have changed'. I was disappointed to this not to be the case. The $3 cupcake is now a mini cupcake. It was not so great. Still dry. I am disappointed. As a small business owner myself, I understand off days, bad batches, revengeful or just uncaring employees. But the consistency of bad service and product is just unacceptable. I have taken all of my business to Beach Pea in Kittery where I have never in 12 years had a bad loaf, cake or customer experience. Ever. I really wish Clyde's Cupcakes all the best. We need a fantastic cupcake bakery/truck/cart or the like in Portsmouth. It makes for a great addition. But I won't ever go back again to Clyde's Cupdakes.The cupcakes and cakes are extremely pretty. We had Clyde's truck make an appearance at our wedding for 100+ people yesterday and he hit it out of the park! We had picked out 10 different flavors and and he made a few extras just for good measure. They were delicious and a huge hit! He has chalkboards on the side of the truck and he let us scribble all kinds of stuff on it-if you're looking for a novel idea for your event I'd definitely recommend Clyde! read more

My husband bought 12 cupcakes at Clyde's to celebrate my birthday with friends. We got to try many varieties and the feedback from our friends was very positive. I had a dark chocolate cupcake and thought it was quite rich and tasty! It was moist and flavorful. We did let them warm to room temperature so the frosting would be soft. The food scene in Exeter can be quite lackluster but Clyde's is raising the bar! The owner is a French-trained pastry chef and very passionate about his craft. He is a warm and friendly person. Let's all support this local business and not accept the mediocrity of Exeter's food scene! read more

I absolutely adore Clyde's Cupcakes and have been a happy customer for over a year. From birthdays to multiple wedding announcements, Clyde has always been able to surprise and delight my team with his creations. Although I definitely cannot choose one favorite cupcake I have had the pleasure on a number of occasions to treat myself to Clyde's dark chocolate and mint cupcake. Topped with a truffle or square of mint chocolate from Lindt, Clyde always takes his designs to the next level. The frosting is always soft and creamy and the cupcakes themselves are moist and so full of flavor. Clyde's cookies are the perfect combination of soft and crunchy and his bars are so decadent. I hate to say it, but I'm a really tough customer and I know what I want. No matter what I've requested of Clyde, he has ALWAYS surpassed my expectations. The rice krispie type treats that are made with lucky charms are to die for. I love, love, love his adorable shop and I've always had positive experiences with his friendly staff. Just writing this review is making me wish I had a whole tray of cupcakes to enjoy this weekend. I can't wait to see what new and exciting flavors will be coming out this month now that we are enjoying fall in New England. We like Clydes it's a great local business. We like the decor in the shop and the pink trucks are fun and distinctive. I came in on 2/13/18 to get 4 cupcakes to celebrate something, and unfortunately they were incredibly dry and hard. The frosting was great but whether stale or overcooked, we were sorry we paid so much for them. Better baking and a more generous size would make them as special as they should be because the flavor ideas are amazing. Fix the cupcakes and forget the balloons and you'll have many loyal followers. read more

I just indulged in a peanut butter cup cupcake and it was a wonderful treat. The cake was a moist and fluffy peanut butter cake topped with a bittersweet chocolate frosting and a dollop of peanut butter frosting in the center. Large slivers of milk chocolate garnished the whole thing. I was almost afraid to eat it...it was so pretty! I have also tried their key lime pie cupcake. Very good! Every cupcake is a work of art. I kept getting really excited every time we passed Clyde's because of the big pink food truck parked outside. Finally my boyfriend stopped in so I could get my fix Upon walking in it had less desserts than I was expecting, but a gorgeous cupcake with an Oreo stuck right on top caught my eye. The girl behind the counter told me that one was "Oreo Milk" and said a few of the other flavors.. She might've said something bout the other non-cupcake desserts I don't know I was thinking about that Oreo. Naturally, that is the cupcake I chose and let me tell you! That was the BEST cupcake I've ever had. I'm a little spacey sometimes, especially when my brain is preoccupied with Oreos, and I didn't really understand why it was called Oreo Milk ..... Until I got a big bite of the perfect icing! I've had a good cupcake. I know what it's like. And these are not good cupcakes. The price isn't bad, at 2.50, but for the quality & service you receive, it's I fortune. I entered the store with a friend and fell in love with the decor, but I'm sorry to report that color scheme and layout were the highlight. My friend ordered a cupcake with an oreo on the bottom, which was interesting. However, her cupcake was especially dry. Mine was a bit more moist, which I prefer. I felt that it tasted like a Betty Crocker/Pillsbury cupcake mix I could buy for under five dollars. In the future, I would rather do THAT than waste my money on something I'm not a huge fan of at Cylde's. The service was HORRIBLE. Our "server" stood around and acted impatiently. When I asked about a flavor I received a very rude reply. Furthermore, the service made me feel as if I was unwelcome and I was getting in the way, while the store was not in the least bit busy. Don't waste your money on this, it's something you could find in a cardboard box at Wal-Mart. And let's be honest, most (if not all) box mixes are pretty bad. If you want a truly good cupcake, venture to Newburyport, where there are several stores with a bit higher price tag, but a HECK OF A LOT of quality. read more

We tried Clyde's Cupcakes in consideration of ordering cupcakes from there for our wedding. I am so glad we tried them first. We tried the basic chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with various frosting. All were dense, dry, and lacking in the flavor department. They tasted like they were baked many days ago - definitely not fresh. We actually only ended up trying one bite of each cupcake before throwing them out. That's says a lot coming from me as I never want to throw out any type of dessert! My husband and I wanted to have Clydes make our wedding cake and cupcakes for our wedding this past weekend. We put in the order a few weeks ago and had everything confirmed for delivery on Saturday. They never showed up for delivery and my wedding planner had to go all the way to their shop, only to be knocking on the door with no answer. 3 hours later, Clyde decided to drop off a cake (not at all what we had ordered for our wedding cake) and some cupcakes. He was so rude and disrespectful to our wedding planner and was demanding to speak to my parents during the middle of our dinner! He made up some lie that our wedding cake and cupcakes had somehow been dropped off at Phillips Exeter Academy. Thankfully the kind people at Hannafords made us a beautiful cake and cupcakes in a punch. Do not Clyde's Cupcakes with large orders or for any special event. Their cupcakes might be delicious but the owner is a disgrace. read more
