Since he wasn't sure if the lot would be open when he got there just after closing and knew the mechanics didn't have a key drop, he advised me to keep the key, double-check the car was locked when I hopped out at my house, and to drop the key off tomorrow to be safe. When I arrived the next day, my car was expertly parked within the security gates but I appreciated the advice. I got a discount since I'd been referred by the garage. But today I went in for an oil change and left feeling totally scammed. When I approached the advisor, he said, "we think your car is out of alignment." I said, "How in the world could you know that? You haven't even looked at it yet!" He said, "we have speed bumps with sensors as you're coming in to the service bay. It says it's slightly out of alignment." I said, "REALLY? I actually couldn't decide which bay to come in to so I ran over them at an angle." Slowly, I might add. He basically said they'd check it and if it didn't need an alignment they wouldn't do one. I said, "Well, can you come talk to me and show me the numbers?" He said, "No, we only have one machine, and if we stop and talk to people it holds up everyone else. We'll give you a before and after so you can see there's no funny business. If it does need one, it'll be $170." I stood there, totally feeling like I was being upsold, but finally said, "Okay." He was pressuring me to make a decision right then and sign the authorization form. Interestingly enough, on the final invoice it said, "Customer states perform 4 wheel alignment." No, I NEVER said that. I reluctantly signed something saying they could do it if it really needed it because he said they couldn't stop for three minutes and come show me the numbers. I was sitting there, a 90 second walk from the diagnostic area, waiting. Upon further research when I got home, I learned that the detection systems, "Hunter Quick Check Drive" (or perhaps knockoff from a competitor) are explicitly marketed to dealerships as a profit tool. Hunter's own marketing states, "wheel alignment is the most profitable dealership service" and pitches the system as a way to "gain profits and revenue" by scanning every car that comes in. Their website says, "Don't lose out on hidden alignment opportunities!" Does that mean City Limits got it solely for that purpose? I have no idea. Can the dealership claim that what they did was above board? Of course they can. And they will. But I definitely felt strong-armed into signing off on something I wasn't convinced I needed. My bad for caving. To get some perspective I talked to another service advisor from a different team, and he explained that two of the numbers were consistent with a real, but extremely trivial deviation -- the kind that's genuinely plausible from an off-angle pass over a sensor pad, and also the kind that most shops would consider a rounding-error fail rather than a "you need this now" issue. Those two numbers "failed" by nearly the SMALLEST measurable margin. There was one other number that was more significantly "off," and he said that probably couldn't have been skewed by the uneven pass over their laser speed bump. However, even that number wasn't in any way dangerous, and the abnormal wear pattern on a tire would take thousands of miles to show, not hundreds. In other words, it probably needed to be aligned at some point, but it definitely wasn't urgent. Know how long it took that guy to explain all this to me? About 45 seconds. And if I had known what he told me, I would've skipped the alignment for now. But City Limits opted not to tell me any of that. They pressured me and made a sale. Beware of this tactic and don't let them scam you. Take your car somewhere else to be evaluated if they tell you that you need an alignment before they've even laid eyes on it. Shame on you, City Limits Subaru. These "profits" aren't worth it if you gain them by withholding information from your customers and pressuring them into services they could easily put off for a time. Today certainly destroyed my faith in you.

The gentleman at the desk said they would need to check the thermostat as that sometimes caused the problem and quoted a price for the diagnostics. I let him know that the water temp was not reading high and reiterated that the problem was the oil temp sensor. He quoted me a price to replace it and I gave them my information and set up an appointment for the next morning. Later that day I got 2 additional phone calls that were so confused on their part that it gave me pause. I took the car in anyway the next morning and on the way home I received a call telling me that they were seeing an a code for the faulty oil temp sensor and did I want to fix that too. Completely exasperated by their lack of understanding of the situation I asked them to give me an updated quote and was told they would get right back to me. Two hours later I received a call with what seemed to me a ridiculously high price based on the information I had available (and much higher than the original quote). When I picked up the car without them doing any work they seemed totally unconcerned about the loss of business. Caveat Emptor

Scam Artist in Disguise - Avoid at All Costs…read more Around 6:30 PM, after a 12-hour shift, I pulled over on the freeway because my driver-side exhaust pipe had slipped off and was dragging. While waiting for family to arrive, a man in a white Chevy truck with yellow emergency lights stopped. He was around 5'8", gray beard, with a young girl (his daughter, I assume) in the passenger seat. Before even looking under the car, I told him exactly what was wrong -- the pipe had come loose just past the catalytic converters and was scraping. I made it very clear I didn't need anything major, just for it to stop scraping so I could get home. I also told him I could give him gas money or $50 as a thank-you. He agreed. Without saying much else, he immediately had his daughter bring over a jack and an angle grinder. He then sawed off the exhaust pipe completely -- a process that took maybe 15 minutes. Afterward, he told me to start the car (now sounding much louder, obviously), said it "sounded better that way," and started writing something. What he handed me was a printed "receipt" charging me $350 for "grinder work" and a "torn O2 sensor repair" -- both of which are absolute lies. My O2 sensor wasn't damaged, and I had no check engine light or error codes. When I refused to pay, he got aggressive, trying to crowd me against my trunk while saying his daughter was a witness that I "agreed to pay." Let me be clear: I didn't ask him to cut anything. I didn't approve the cost beforehand. I didn't agree to pay a set amount. I didn't even call him -- he pulled over on his own. He started fake-calling someone and threatening to "get me towed." When I stood my ground, he said absurd things like "death by deceivement" (not a real thing) and started trying to manipulate me into paying. Then my family arrived, and he yelled at my mother while trying to guilt her into paying. My mom, wanting to de-escalate and get home to my recovering grandma, offered him $140 -- which he snatched and left with. The receipt he gave me? No name, no client info, no license, no car model -- completely bogus. This man is a predator who takes advantage of people stranded and vulnerable. He intimidated me and my family, lied about the damage, and tried to bully money out of us for something I never agreed to. He's running a scam operation with no integrity, and dragging his daughter along for it -- which is honestly heartbreaking. To the man who scammed me: You said it would cost $60 to weld the exhaust back on. So why would it cost $350 to hack it off? You're not just dishonest -- you're deliberately abusive. Today I brought in my Civic Type R for some damage caused by an 18 wheeler's tire blowing up in front of me and hitting my front bumper. There wasn't any serious damage to the bumper but there was damage to the front lip. I didn't want to go through insurance for a full bumper replacement and went to classic collision to see if my bumper was salvageable. One of their technicians was able to pop the front lip back into place and for now it looks like there was no damage at all. And they didn't even take my money when I offered to pay for the labor.
