There are several days you can play, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday. Each Day of the week has a different vibe and level of competition. I mainly play on Sundays which is a little less competitive than other days. And it gives me enough time to recover. After the games we head to our sponsor bar to hang out, drink, and play flip cup. Really fun and really great way to meet new people in a new city (or when you want to make new friends in the city you've lived in for awhile). Every league is different, so it's worth trying a few if you don't like the first one you are in. The kickball is fun but it works really well when paired with the drinking games after. The most important thing is to find a league where the post-game bar is on a night where you can afford to drink and is easy to get home from (i.e. no driving necessary). A good post-game means it doesn't matter whether you are on a team that loses every game. There is a mix of players and some have played for a few years and understand the strategies and have experience, while others are just starting out. Signing up as a free agent is pretty random, so you can get placed on a completely new team or as filling out an established squad. This is an off-the-field review... Those of you representing Kezar pub and 1751 Social Club last night, your behaviour was appropriate for a sports bar - not a restaurant. You were rude to the staff and disrespectful to the other patrons. Also, chanting is for the field and the stands, not the dinner table. To those of you who were just as embarrassed by your group as I was, next time get them under control instead of sitting there. I'm glad I left before the margaritas kicked in. read more

Sorry to be the wet blanket here, but I was not a fan of WAKA-Marina. Amongst my many gripes is that I'm not sure what my $75 dollar registration paid for outside of a pink WAKA shirt.... We only had 5 games, there weren't any amazing specials at our bar (which I could have gone to for free any other night and gotten basically the same specials), we had to ref our own games, and the each game was only 45 minutes which didn't amount to much of anything. Granted, the drink ups after the games weren't really my scene, so maybe that makes the $75 registration worth it...but honestly it was money poorly spent that i wish I could get back. Maybe the other WAKA leagues get you more bang/fun for your buck...but I'm not dropping more $ into the WAKA barrel to find out. read more

Lauren S.'s Rules for Kickball. 1. Never underestimate the power of a bunt. Seriously. 2. Create a team name that inspires camaraderie and team spirit. ie. High Rollers. 3. Create catchy saying to yell when you score. "Cuz that's how we roll!" 4. Come up with kick ass Roller Derby style individual names . ie. Spunky Bruiser, Dicks Kicks, Paul's Black Balls, J.P. Pee Pants. 5. Drink in hand at all times. 6. Don't ever take yourself or the game too seriously. Its only kickball. 7. Make sure you save some energy and room for more beer for the flip cup that will follow. Chances are, you will be better at flip cup then you are at kickball. 8. No bouncies. 9. Listen to your base coaches. 10. Try to avoid being the last up for the last out of the last inning and kicking it straight to the pitcher. Not a good play. read more

There should be two leagues instead of one separating these two groups of ambitious kick ballers: 1. Has-been jocks who break out their glory days football jersey 2. Party people I also think WAKA could be organized and run more professionally. From my perspective, they must be making a pretty good wad of cash, and don't put a lot of effort into organization. I've tried to unsubscribe from their email newsletter 3 times, but still remain on the spam list. Most likely I won't be kicking their balls anytime soon. read more

Sometimes you just need to bolt from your computer, and the grind of the day to launch a red ball into orbit and run the bases with a beer in hand. This is my first season playing kickball in the Redwoods league and it is a blast. The whole thing is pretty surreal. I remember just watching in awe during the first game, as a bunch of "responsible young adults" transformed into kickball drinking machines! it was classic. And something everyone needs to be a part of. The work week can get grueling, so getting out there and meeting new people, having a beer or 2 and just having some good ol' recess fun is key to getting through the week. The people are amazing, down to earth, and everyone is open to meeting new people. The games are organized and actually pretty competitive, but all in good fun. WAKA is more of a drinking league that warms up by playing kickball. A typical game night will include: Standing around drinking kicking a rubber ball running shotgunning beer crowding into kezar pub flip cup drinking Everyone is laid back and friendly. WAKA Kickball is the absolute best! I love it!!!! I currently play in two leagues in SF (I believe there are 5 total). We play at Rossi Fields on Wednesday and GGP on Sunday. Both can be cold, but this is San Francisco so you have to expect crappy weather. Both teams that I play on made it to the championship games in VEGAS this last season around. Just in case you didn't know, the National Championship games consist of about 70 teams from across the US - it gets pretty competitive! Neither of my teams won, but my friend's team came in 2nd place in the nation!! I highly recommend WAKA Kickball for any adult looking to have fun and make new friends. I'll be starting my 4th season in March (kind of a long time away) and I can't wait! Oh, and we PARTY BALLS!! read more

Upsides: WAKA is a great way to meet new people in the area. It is like going back to college where everyone is around the same age, looking to play some games, drinks some beers, and have fun. I would rank it a step below coed softball as far as competitiveness goes. Most people have been doing this for many years, which goes to show how much fun it is. Downsides: Cost. More than $70 per season, but that does have some money go towards "events" throughout the year. Some people are waayyyy too competitive for a kickball league. Overall: Definitely worth it if you are new to the area and want to meet people or are just interested in having a good time with your friends. Recommend it to everyone! read more

"Kickball is cold." ... that was our team mantra ... Playing in the fall league last year, I learned how bitterly cold GG park can get. I've never appreciated a beer cozy as much as I did on those Thursday nights, bundled up in long underware, jeans, sweatshirt, ski jacket and a beanie. Drinks at Kezar's after made the cold tolerable. A fun way to get out and do something new with your Thursday nights. Probably would have been even MORE fun if our team hadn't sucked so phenominally much. read more

Bus Stop is the best team bar! To correct Craig E's assertion, we are a drinking league with a kickball SPECIALTY! See you on the field and then at the table. I wish we could combine flip cup with Kickball into one big super game! For fun, try playing flip cup but your anchor has to flip it onto a beer can upside down, instead of the table, and every missed attempt is a shot of beer for the whole team before the next try. Major Fun Solution. -- Update: I may not be able to show my face here again after last night. We MIGHT have been drunk enough to think throwing metal buckets full of ice on others was a good idea. Good organization, great website and e-mail updates, and best off all KICKBALL!!! People in the league are fun, who come to have a good time. You might find the occasional super competitive team, but it's all good once you go to the bar after the games and kick their butt in flip cup. Minus one star for the small field on Geary St. and Scott. Two fields are back to back, and close, that center fielders are right next to each other. And if you're on the Geary St side, if the pitch is wild, it will go on to the street and you'll lose a ball/ cause a car accident. read more

Ummm, this league is definitely a college flashback! It's like one big fraternity/sorority exchange... for adults! Let me tell you, it's AWESOME!!! I found this league on yelp last fall and decided to form a team last minute! We played in the Wednesday night Redwoods league in Rossi Fields (Inner Richmond). We had a team of about 20 friends and the season was absolutely a blast!!! The kickball game is pretty chill - you can bring drinks as long as you put them in non-alcoholic containers (gatorades bottles, etc). Basically, every is getting trashed during the game. Afterwards, all the teams go to the bar (Ireland's 32 for the Redwoods league) and plays competitive flipcup! Yes, competitive flipcup! We averaged approximately 20 games of flipcup per night! Sigh, there's no better way to spend a Wednesday night. Let me tell you, Thursday mornings are the worst! It's the off-season right now and it feels like there's a void in my life! Haha. WAKA Kickball is the best thing that's happened to me since I discovered girls were not gross. They have several different leagues that play in various parts of the city. Each league is different and has its own style and culture. I play on Sundays mostly but have played on Wednesday and Thursdays. It's a great way to meet new people and have tons of fun. A drinking league with a kickball problem would be an accurate mantra for WAKA. Drinking cheap beer outside while kicking a big red ball is pretty much the ideal way to spend a Thursday night...throw in a little flip cup at the Bus Stop afterwards and you have a full circle, drinking, kicking, cheap beer solution. Playing kickball is fun when you were in grammer school. Playing kickball in your twenties is still cool since its a flashback when you were playing it during recess. But throw in the beer drinking before, during, and after the game, you got yourself a pretty good experience. A friend recommended me to join and have not regretted it ever since. I have met some great people here especially from our team. Its so fun that when the week starts up, I'm already looking forward to Thursday night, when we get together and play, experience our interaction together and hang out after to do some beer drinking and flip cup. Having previosuly played kickball in Nashville, TN and found that it was a great opportunity to have a lot of fun while meeting new people and expanding one's social network, I got some friends together and signed up a team to play in the Yuerba Buena Kickball League. This division is part of the World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA), and has been around for a while, playing games on Wednesday nights at Little Rec Field in Golden Gate Park. Obviously, kickball in itself is a great time, but add in the fact that everybody in the league must be over 21, and adult beverages at games (before, during, or after) are not frowned upon, you can pretty much guarentee a good time for those willing to partake. If that is not enough, there's more fun and games with the team bonding moments after the games, whereby teams will go to the sponsor bar (in this case Kezar) and play each other in rounds of flip cup (aka taps, boat races). Indeed, these flip cup games are where champions are made and the real bragging rights earned for which team is ultimately the best of the bunch!! Compared to the other divisions in SF, I believe this division has established itself as one of the best by having some of the most entertaining teams/individuals, actually holding social events during the season, and being affiliated with one of the coolest bars in the city. Props this Spring 2008 season to all the organizers of the league - Pablo, Vu, Carlee, Sarah, Bridgett, and many thanks to Kezar Pub!! Last Thursday, I played my first game of kickball since I was 7. Last time I played, I gave a girl a bloody nose...think i was a lot better then.....and more aggressive, hahaha. I managed to avoid blood this time around, but the season is still young! My team is totally badass, ya that's right I'm on the Blue Balls team...have been told by quite a few that that's the perfect team for me....hmmmm, sorry guys? Anyhoo, no sweat off my balls...everybody drinks, everybody is there to have a good time and it was not nearly as intense as I thought it would be. So far everyone I have met has been totally rad and it is an awesome way to meet new people and friends! I mean, who couldn't use a few more totally awesome friends?? I heard one girl from a past season complain that "everybody drinks too much." OKAY LOOK, if you sign up for an activity that has a designated bar to go to after, chances are people are gonna be drinking....heavily....I suggest you quit being such a pussy, sack up, and have a little fun in your life! read more

I had such a great time last fall playing Kickball in Golden Gate Park. I blindly joined a team and now have some life long friends to boot. The sloshball day was epic fun, can't put down your beer the entire game. Good fun but keep the kiddies at home. read more

When in doubt, munt. Don't ask, just do it, go for the munt. My first season of kickball was last fall and it was an absolute blast. What a great way to meet people looking to have good time. The last time I had played kickball prior to WAKA, was in my best memory, grade school. Who knew that playing kickball as an adult would be so much fun! The best is that it doesn't matter how good or bad your team is. Last season my team was not in last place, but we still had the most points scored against us. Regardless we probably had the most fun out of all the teams on the field. I will admit some teams take the league quite seriously, and it's very amusing to watch them get uptight about winning (they make themselves look like uber meatheads, but I guess that happens with any activity out there...). Also, the fun doesn't end when the kickball game is over. The flip cup games at Kezar's is fun. (ironically, our team may have sucked on the field, but on the flip cup table we rocked).
