Never really knew there would be a difference and yet there is... It's a tricky place to get to if you don't know the shortcuts, and if you do you'll end up to a place that looks like a separate island. A spectacular waterfront at night with up to 4 function rooms, an outdoor terrace, a boardroom and a great family lunch venue on the weekends. Food wise will depend on your budget and the more you pay the better the quality. There are even options for premium upgrades for a few dollar extra per person basis. Though I must rate their desserts as this has never disappointed me in the past! Their steaks, pork chops, pork bellies, chicken breast, spatchcocks and fish have good and bad times, lacks consistency. Desserts and entrees are their specialities so far for me. Also, their wedding hospitality is awesome and their wedding function specialist is a man named John and he is awesome!!! Made my night.

Plus weddings are big events so there are a lot of other variables that could play a factor in you enjoying the night. I really enjoyed my night, the finger food on the table at the start was quite snack worthy. It was Lebanese style, the natives did complain about it, but being a non-native (although frequent eater) it was good enough for me. Entrees were 2 different types of pasta which were both very nice. Mains were lamb and chicken, I didn't get too eat much of it (crazy 2 year old was given free reign and was going...crazy), but from what I did eat and what I heard was all positive. Dessert was also very good. We got kids meals too, pasta and chicken burger, it was nice but the kid was too busy dancing to eat! I did hear about GST being charged twice which had to be pointed out (which is a lot for a wedding) so be wary when paying. Plus there were a couple of audio issues with music cutting out (not sure if that was the venues fault or not). So not an entirely perfect night but still a fun night out.

Expensive for what it is - even with the view Went for lunch…read morethe other day. Service was lovely and the food generally tasty, however for the price it was very mean. Not just small but realy kids size. The battered fish and chips my dining partner had was a hefty $32.50 and for that you got a plate with an adult size portion of chips with a small kids side serve of fish (like only 3 small pieces no bigger than a small fish finger size). Maybe it should have been called chips and fish. The salad was again lovely but little short on the primary ingredient. We were in early for the lunch service so can't be put down to running out of the day's ingredients. Overall, nice views, friendly but not over bearing service, mean meals with an overly high price tag for what you get. Understand costs have risen - however when compared to the delicious fish and chips I had in North Sydney later that night whcih had 3 very large pieces equally well cooked with plenty of chips and fresh salad, it seems to put it all into perspective (there was so much I had to share!!) Finally - note this restaurant charges a surcharge for any credit cards, however there was not easily visible notice by their till when you go up to pay, and we were not advised when going to pay with credit card. These notices need to be bigger and more proactive but staff so there is no doubt. We found out only when the money was taken.

We both ordered Eggs Benedict, which arrived with beautifully soft poached eggs, in a fairly nice sauce, but all of it was luke warm at best. I am not sure if the waiter or the chef was to blame. The service was pretty lack lustre, and I am making a bet that the plates stayed on the path for a lot longer than would ensure a warm delivery. The views are pleasant, and the interior is nice. The prices are not bad, it cost us about $55.00 I think, and that included coffee, a juice and a glass of bubbles. Don't think I'd go back though, as we went out to a local cafe this morning, and the eggs benedict we had there were far superior. Hard to judge a restaurant just on a breakfast though. Nothing that was terribly bad, it was just that it was all so cold.

OMG Am I really the first to be reviewing this place? Good lord! Why!????…read more Look here's the scoop:- Cafe BIrkenhead as a name opened (if memory serves) in 1996 or 1997. It won accolade after accolade for sensational food, with a seasonal menu (yeah they changed it every season) and million dollar waterfront views of the harbour, right across to North Sydney (you could see the brown block of RNS in the distance), but with magnificent Cockatoo Island in the foreground. I adored this place. Then it changed hands and everything went a little "cheaper".. same type of food, but instead of delicate obviously fresh whiting fillets for "fish and chips" something frozen and re-fried was slathered on top of a pile of greasy chips. Then Birkenhead point changed. Cafe Birkenehead had to move, and it now has.. a-hundred-thousand dollar views of... other peoples apartments in Balmain, across sparce water filled with a marina, with little traffic. Worst, the layout of the new place is so wide that the views aren't that great from the ample couch seating at the entrace side. Too many staff now dominate the floor, and I don't think any of them know what they are doing, at least none of them knew enough to take our order in a timely manner (the first time we returned) or to serve it in a timely manner (the second time; yes I had to ask for the food to be brought out) Who eats polenta chips? Honestly? they are greasy and disgusting, and frankly sound like a way of using up left-over polenta carried over from one of the other restaurants owned by this multi-congolomerate restaurant chain (Blackbird at Darling Harbour have you mended your broken wing yet?!). Why do I mention these polenta so-called "chips"? Well, because they are absolutely ubiquitous on the fabric covered menu. Everywhere. The schnitzel was generous, and lovely, if you discount the mushroom sauce which was obviously made with that "sauce base" you can buy in a beer bottle (look for it at Coles) and the fish was actually quite well cooked although its en-crustment of chickpea neither holds up to that wonderful crunch I expect from deep fried fish, nor to taste, as anything remotely pulse like in the batter was lost amidst the staple batter ingredients. Food that arrived late, food that pretentiously apes at classy bistro food combined with late, un-interested and un-caring overall service, ritzy "look there's fire!!" decorations, fancy exposed beams and air-vents (that's Birkenehead Point's signature look).. Does this sentence make sense? No? neither does "Cafe" Birkenhead. My memories are of a better place. Sorry, cafe birkenehead, keep trying. I'll review this again no doubt in the coming months because I am a sucker for punishment.

Lunches at at Cafe prices for the time being so I am more than happy to come eat here and see all they have to offer. I can go back again, again, and again, and it never seems any smaller, and I never feel like I've completely done it. It's like LOST, except no one is trying to kill you. And I suppose there isn't as much jungle. Ok, clearly that was an inappropriate analogy, let's talk about Cockatoo Island instead. It's a great venue for exhibitions, with a summertime Island Bar, and a tremendously layered history: from Indigenous histories, to its life as a convict prison, once it held a reformatory for wayward girls, then it had a life as a shipbuilding & submarine building island, with plenty of WWII bunkers.... the list goes on. Consequently, Cockatoo Island has a delightful mix of industrial edginess, natural beauty, and sandstone structures built by convicts. In the daytime many of the buildings are open to the public, so you can actually walk around inside as well as outside - and there are some great old structures to explore. The best way to get here is by ferry, though I suppose you could swim, if you were willing to brave the Parramatta River sharks. It's a bit windswept, so you might want to bring some layers. You can also stay overnight: in comfort, in gorgeous heritage houses, or you can camp in tents, right by the water. They have tents available, or you can bring your own & just pay for the campsite. You can even go "glamping". Glamping is just like camping, except they provide a bed, linen, towels and soaps. The beds are pretty uncomfortable... but they might beat a thin little bedroll... From someone who has lived to tell the tale: yes, glamping is slightly more comfortable than camping, but really, it's not probably not worth the extra cost. The shower & kitchen facilities are newish and usually quite clean. Getting hot water working in the showers is a bit hit and miss though. It's a fabulous island for music festivals, but they don't seem to do that so much these days.
