Have you ever been up close and personal with the band you've gone to see? Not in a Pamela Des Barres way. Well, I was lucky enough to witness Satellite Party before they disbanded at Club Academy, the smallest and cosiest of all the academy venues, and let me give you some free advice. If one of your favourite bands winds up playing here, GO. You won't regret it. Because you'll only be a few metres from your heroes.
Satellite Party were at the time a supergroup consisting of many famous faces in the rock world, but for me the important ones were Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction, and Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme. (He's TINY! No wonder those signature Washburn N4s fit girls so well.) After a couple of drinks in the lovely Big Hands (the best location for a pre-gig sharpener or a post-gig wind down) we meandered over to Club Academy and upon realising how teeny and toasty it was, we got very excited. Mere feet from the Peripheral and the Nune! Fabulous.
While this space maintains the standards of the rest of the Academies, its intimate size makes it a superb place to see bands. How lucky we felt that Satellite Party were huge in the States but niche over here. One of the best gigs I've ever been to, and that's not just because of how great the band were (although the sight of Farrell glugging from a red wine bottle in between bouts of singing was entertaining enough by itself), the venue was equally responsible. If you want to feel like a proper muso keep on the lookout for Club Academy shows. Just... try not to touch the bands too much. Tempting as it can be for some. read more
