Fortunately, on our single-evening tour of Manchester's Gay Village drinking establishment offerings, we encountered The Molly House, an honest-to-goodness gay bar in Manchester that's a bar... and gay... and -not- rubbish. See, folks. They -do- exist. With a bar stocking products like St. Germain, Kraken rum, and various noteworthy whiskeys, I had a good feeling about this first floor hideaway. My suspicions were confirmed when my Manhattan (£11.50 for two) ended up being far superior to the one I'd had a few hours earlier at Apotheca. Plus, the hunky muscle daddy working the DJ station earned a point or two for the establishment. This seems like the kind of place you'd have to bring your own crowd to, but it's warmer, cosier, and definitely offers superior beverages to other joints in the immediate vicinity. read more

I spent four days in U.K. during Christmas week and went out with my colleagues on Christmas Eve. We went to Canal Street, which is obviously the gay district of Manchester. We needed an adult beverage stop. Enter: The Molly House. Now I am not a drinker, I don't like the taste of alcohol, but I needed something to keep me warm on a chilly winter night. I ordered a hot mug of Mullen Wine that was quite festive. Very Christmassy indeed and very sweet. I wasn't a massive fan of the atmosphere, and I thought it was quite small. But then again it's a nice cosy little three level hideaway with the lavatory being on the 3rd floor. They do serve food here, but, unfortunately, didn't get to order any of them. The Molly House was the location of a recent Time Out blogger meet up and I left asking only one question - how have I not been here before? We were treated to a number of platters for the table, both meat and veggie, some delicious wine, and a cocktail each. The cocktail menu is well crafted with a combination of sweet mixes and straighter shorts, many of which come with something special on the side. For example, my citrus and lavender mix came with fresh lavender sprigs and the Ginger Rogers comes with a small edible photo of the lady herself. The platters were piled high with whitebait (not my thing!), potatoes with sour cream & tomato sauce, a minced beef pastry, meatballs, chorizo, and crunchy bread. The bread was perfect for mopping up the sauces left by the meatball and chorizo, the latter of which was my favourite item on the plate. We also had some small side salads for a bit of greenery! The atmosphere was super relaxed and we were well looked after throughout the night, with the wine topped up and food only taken once we had eaten our fill. I'll definitely be back for a mid-week treat to try the rest of the menu. read more

I'm a bit unsure why it's taken me so long to go back to the Molly House, it did used to be a semi regular haunt with our old office just around the corner but has in recent years just fallen out of my memory. Situated in the perfect location between the two usual city centre exit points for myself and friends (Piccadilly station and St Peters Square tram stop) it's one of the best bars in 'the Village' and it's refreshing not to be part of the identikit Deansgate locks style bars on Canal Street. A 3 story fully refurbed modern town pub, this gay bar does a really good job of being appealing to a wide variety of patrons. The bottom floor has a bar and seating for around 30 people with a great selection of craft beers on pump and bottles behind - plus there's a kitchen selling everything from snacks to main meals, sharing meat and cheese platters and some damn fine looking cake! We had actually just been out for dinner so unfortunately I couldn't stuff any more in but I will be back for the food! The upstairs is huge with a very big bar, outdoors terrace and enough room for I'd say 100 people. Very modern unisex loos on the top floor should also get a special mention - some of the best in Manchester if that's of interest to you too! A cool vibe and a cool place - I'm going to make sure I don't leave it as long as last time before hitting 'The Molly' again! read more

Tucked around the corner from the boisterous bright lights of Canal Street you will find The Molly House, which describes itself as an 'alternative and vintage bar/café' which in fairness, fits the bill quite well. I'd never really had a great night out in the Village. Whilst the flamboyance and cheesiness might be one person's idea of fun, it's not really mine, I've always found it a bit over the top. So instead of actually being drawn to any of the venues the Village has on offer I've only ever ended up there because, well, it's the Village. What a relief then, to be introduced to The Molly House which is the kind of place I would make the effort to go to, regardless of its location. The fact that it's the only place in the Village where I feel like I actually fit in, is just an added bonus. The building is split into two stories with a bar on each floor. I got the feeling that the downstairs was more like the café area, though they did have a full bar there as well, as well as a coffee machine that makes really yummy lattes. Upstairs is a slightly smaller room and I got the feeling that this was the main social area, it also has access to a sweet balcony covered in decking, where the smokers can go to relieve themselves. The décor is quite eccentric, which I love. My favourite piece was a portrait of a woman made to look as if somebody had graffiti'd a moustache upon her upper lip, very clever. There are some old fashioned sofas , and a table that seems to be made from a giant barrel, there is even a birdcage with a stuffed crow inside it (fake/real - I have no idea) which might sound a bit bizarre to say the least, but it actually works really well. It's a relatively small venue, which gives it a much more personal, intimate atmosphere which I really enjoyed. It was 'nice'. My English teacher used to scoff at the word 'nice' but I think there is a lot to be said for it. It can sometimes convey exactly what you mean without embellishing a sentence with superlatives and fancy adjectives. To give you a feel for prices, it is £4.40 for a double gin and tonic, which I was happy to pay for the night, but wouldn't be able to afford it regularly, which is a shame really. But the staff are all very friendly and helpful. One barman really impressed me with his skill at making my g&t - he lined the rim of the glass with lime and then actually squeezed the lime into the glass, which was perfect because I hate having to dig the lime out with my fingers and squeeze it myself, very undignified! Limes in my g&t make my tastebuds squeal with delight. I've already made plans for my next visit to The Molly House, and I'm already excited! read more

The Molly House would be one of the few pubs in the city I'd happily give up my day job for and work there (if I could afford to, that is). The cosy ground floor bar has a few regularly rotated guest ales on tap (there always seems to be a locally produced one available), a good amount of seating and a small kitchen where you can order tapas dishes, platters or burgers. More often than not they'll also have cake and/or brownies available to buy at the bar. Belinda Carlisle was right: Heaven IS a place on Earth. Climb a flight of stairs and the more spacious second bar will have you gazing up at the seemingly unending range of spirits. Their gin selection in particular is not to be sniffed at. It has all the best parts of vintage shabby chic for me and is always a really relaxed place to head to for a drink. I'd always recommend them to friends looking for a good watering hole in Manchester. Tip: most random tip ever but you need to check out the cool unisex loos in this place, possibly the only example with a saloon-door pisoire in the city? read more

Hiding in a little alley way in the famous Gay village of Manchester, Molly House was quite a discovery for me when my best friend asked me to join him for drinks there. I was pleasantly surprised with the venue which sticks by its reputation of being vintage and alternative. The whole decor in Molly house is very vintage indeed, right from the couches to the bar and even the smoking area! I love bars which have a smoking zone such a relief when it is freezing outside! I would not call Molly house a place for a night out but its definitely good for a week night drink with friends. I absolutely loved the gigantic bar they have with brilliant lights, it looks totally classy and yes very vintage! The drinks are on the expensive side though which is a bummer but I have heard the food is great from some people (Haven't tried it myself) Definitely a nice place to hang out in Canal Street and always has a very good/ decent crowd. Molly house is situated on Richmond Street, just behind Canal Street. You walk in and on the left is the door where there is some Seating and a bar in front of you. Or you can walk up the stairs and on the first floor is a bar. There is some outside space so the smokers can have a cigarette. Inside there is natural brickwork exposed. The staff are very friendly. There are some guest alcohol drinks and all the spirits are on the top shelf. This is a great location to start your evening off before you progress on to Canal Street. read more

I love this place. I have been going here for a few months now and I have to say that it is a grat little back street bar. Indeed the location adds to it's charm. Located above Company Bar in the Gay Village, this little gem looks amazing inside, with a distinctly Georgian Molly House theme. There is an outstanding selection of drinks on offer including some great teas if that's your bag. The only thing that is missing is food! Apparently that is to be remedied soon with the introduction of a light menu. This place is also ideal if you smoke because they have one of the best little smoking terraces located next to the upstairs bar. Fantastic craft beer selection, and a wonderful New York loft bar vibe. Amazingly friendly and helpful staff, too. A tad expensive compared to the rest of the Village, but so worth the extra cash for far superior alcohol. They've got a long-running relationship with local Bury brewery Outstanding, which is always nice to see - as well as a pretty much stunning (if also rather expensive) whiskey selection. The Molly House also does food, which sadly I haven't sampled for a while (so the star rating doesn't really reflect the food) - but the tapas, especially the tempura style dishes, was by and large excellent: everything was absolutely fresh and really very tasty. read more

I absolutely adore the Molly House. The decor is simply amazing. It makes you feel relaxed and at home as soon as you arrive. There's an amazing spirit selection including 2 different Appleton rums, and Brugal from the Dominican Republic which is not easy to come by at all on this side of the Atlantic. There's a cute little roof garden for the smokers accessible directly from the upstairs bar. The top floor houses Unisex toilets. Always a giggle to check the reaction of unsuspecting straight friends after their trip to the loo!! Great service from the friendly staff. Been to the moly house any times and always had a pleasant experience. When I've visited with friends on a weekend for drinks the atmosphere is great. It's usually busy on a weekend but no excessive waiting at the bar and the people in there are always friendly. As for the food, it's lovely!! Tested it one day and returned many times since with family and friends. The food is tapas which is cooked downstairs while you watch and comes out plate by plate. Prices are reasonable for the standard. There have been one or two small issues on the past, for example they ran out of the wine we were drinking and on another occasion they got our table reservation mixed up, but that said the staff here are amenable and will try to sort things out for you if they make a mistake. Overall a great place for drinks or food, definitely recommended! read more

Nice little pub in the village, a lot of room which is good- a lot of the pubs around canal street which I've visited so far are a little bit of a squeeze to get into! Molly House is nice and welcoming, drinks aren't too pricey and they have a lovely outdoor smoking area packed with wooden benches and plants. Tapas, go for the tapas if nothing else, they are by far the best in town and very reasonably priced. Every time I go in unable to move from the amount I've eaten, a can't bare to leave anything. The tapas are very fresh and there are a few things not on a standard tapas menu. Other than the tapas, I can't comment on the other food as I've never tried it, tapas every time! It's main business is as a bar, and they do this very well also, a great night, afternoon or even morning tea and coffee kinda place. You can't go wrong. read more

I really enjoyed my fairly brief trip to The Molly House. I loved the selection of beer - better than a lot of places in the city centre, and not too expensive either. Overwhelmed by choice I tried a half of the Tickety Brew Jasmine Green Tea and a half of the Bear Town Bluebeary (£1.90 each). Both were nice. The bar itself is nicely decorated, with plenty of room for some good old fashioned sitting down (because seriously, who wants to stand up). The menus looked interesting as did the wine & tapas deals. Reserving more stars for future visits, as I'm sure I'll be back now I know it's there. read more

The Molly House is on Richmond Street, just behind Canal Street so it's a little bit quieter around here than on the main stretch of the Gay Village. It's much closer to being a traditional English pub than a stereotypical gay bar, but the fact that they serve tapas deviates from that traditional view slightly! There are three floors - a small downstairs bar where the kitchen is, another bar on the first floor, and the toilets are on the top floor. The toilets were nice and clean, but take note that they are unisex - cubicles for everyone, with urinals separated by saloon doors. Drinks are a mixture of well known brands and some nice local beers so it's not a characterless lineup! They also do hot drinks and mocktails and have a big selection of spirits too. Drinks are a bit on the pricey side; two pints cost about £7 but in the heart of the villa that's not too surprising. TL;DR - Not your stereotypical gay bar, an interesting take on the traditional British pub. read more

I really love the Molly House, it really is a great bar, it attracts a great crowd of guys- some are quite attractive, haha, It has two really cool bars one down and one up and the toilets are right on the 3rd floor, i think the Molly House has a nice touch of class to it what none of the Bars on Canal Street have it is just behind Canal Street on Richmond Street. Its very classy and has the look of what a bar should look like with its coolness of arty pictures and bar stools and cool lighting, it kinda looks like a really cool bar from the Northern Quarter, every member of staff I've come across seems really down to earth and friendly and the same with the crowd. They did do a tapas menu for a bit but not sure if they still do. The bar upstairs seems to be the place to be though with a more fun crowd, downstairs just seems to be a bar to just chill and chat with friends but both great bars. So if youre looking for a classy bar whats attracts a good looking crowd without the pretentious people head here, you will have a great time. read more

This place confused me. The website makes it out to be a traditional English Tea Room which also does some food, and is beautifully decorated, lots of space to lounge around and relax etc. However when I got there, the nice looking lounge was closed, and the only space to really sit down was on a few wooden benches around long tables. There were several closed wooden doors leading off this main room, but it was hard to work out if you were supposed to use them to go elsewhere, or if they were private. The menus on the tables were booklet-types and 3/4 empty... the only things shown were Spanish tapas... which I thought was a bit unusual for the theme of the venue. Tea wasn't mentioned. I had to go and ask at the counter about tea, and they looked a little confused, but passed me a scruffy creased menu from up on a shelf, which was basically the Teapigs teas range, not a menu. It had no prices. They didn't take cards, so I excused myself to find a cash machine, but instead went elsewhere (see the end of this review). So basically as nice as it looked, it wasn't as welcoming as I felt the website made it out to be, nor particularly well stocked with tea for a 'tea room'. For the proper tea room experience, I'd recommend going further down the same street, and going to Richmond Tea Rooms. read more

Hip vibe - nice decor - not what you expect from the outside! It's got the whole mustache Manchester thing going on inside from the paintings, brick work, the layout of the bar, and it's clearly the cool place to be! I love the wooden floorings. Stools and teeny tables like in a pub but also big comfy chairs with big backs and arms. The drinks are the regular city centre price, but come with the nifty teeny straws, BIG block ice and coaster napkins. The place for cool relaxing drinks amongst talks with friends. The music is fairly low key and nothing blaring so loudly that you can't hear the person across the table. There's a cool little balcony upstairs for the smokers with nice wooden decking and plants on the fencing. Very relaxed atmosphere. I don't drink much, so the availability of coffee and tea helps, but mostly I love the layout and interiors. You can either sit down at a proper table or stand, and the decor is cozy and nice-- especially upstairs (where a moderate level of cruising seems to occur.) The staff could work on their attitude; I've always been pleasant and completely sober when I go here, so I'm not sure why that should merit a consistent level of unfriendliness. If you don't care about dancing and you just want a place for a chat with some friends, this is the place to be. There's also a good age range of clientele, so both younger and older customers will feel at home here. The ground level has a good mix of genders and sexual orientations as well. read more

After coming here for a quick drink with the Yelp crew I swore that I would return as the food smelt/looked amazing....so I came here on Thursday evening after work for some dinner...Immediately it had the same comforting ambiance that I remembered so I decided to try their tapas...Between the three of us we settled on a veggie and seaford platter and potatoes with chorizo... I also chose to wash this down with a cocktail called zombie under the recommendation of the bar lady...I admit the table we sat on was really wonky and in the way of the bathroom....which unsettled us a little..this was the only table left..so we could not move...but when the food arrived it looked amazing...the veggie consisted of houmous, goats cheese, aubergines (which I ate and normally hate) bread, omelette, salad and some other type of cheese,...the seafood consisted of breaded prawns, cod, squid rings, whitebait, dipping and sauces and a sald.. These cost £15ish each which was good for tapas considering you pay £5 for a small plate...The cocktail was severed in a huge pint glass with a handle which lasted me the duration of the meal...Overall I really enjoyed the quality of the meal, and found it quite reasonably priced for tapas...it came to £16.50 once we split the bill.... The Molly House is a really quaint bar tucked away on a back street just off Canal Street. The décor is quite quirky with big wooden uneven tables and shelves full of books. Unfortunately we had just eaten so were too full to sample the food which looked delicious. The food is tapas style and the do a range of yummy looking platters and cakes as well. The bar is well stocked and the vibe is very relaxed. It's nice to have such a place amongst the more lively bar scene of the Gay Village. The Molly House offers an oasis of calm and is a must visit if you want a low key night in the area. read more

The Molly house is a great quirky little bar in the gay village. It comprises 2 floors with additional floor housing the loos and an outside bbq area on the first floor. The decor is a mix of interesting items and has a slight hipster feel, it wouldn't feel out of place in the northern quarter. They serve a wide variety of draught beers and stock an impressive selection of spirits to suit most tastes. Food wise they serve a mix of tapas and other dishes, the tapas is 33% off Sunday to Thursday so make sure you check it out on a week day to get a bargain. Due to the closure of our regular haunt, my polo team have made this our new home and they kindly provide sandwiches and snacks after our hard training sessions. It's a very welcoming place and quiet enough to have a chat without being drowned out by the music. So come check out the tapas, try the drinks and if the company you're with bore you, just grab a copy of the da Vinci code or Jeremy Clarksons latest rant off the book shelf :) read more

The food is exquisite and I like watching it being cooked, especially when the chef does something, I don't know what but the pan "bursts into flames" for a split second! Serves coffee on the Ground Floor, and has four good cask conditioned beers, three Beartown Brewery, Congleton ales: including Kodiak Gold and Black Bear and Caledonian, Deuchars IPA served on both floors. The upper floor is called the Bordello and is accessed by the red walled staircase. Toilets are on the Third Floor. Richmond Street is the next up, parallel to Canal Street and the Molly Bar is close to Sackville Street. read more
