    Matt & Phredd's

I have always had a soft corner for Matt & Phredd's as a music venue. Music venues in the northern quarter have that special something about them that you don't get anywhere else. Seven days of live music, more or less and decent cocktails with a free pizza offer between certain hours on certain days of the week and you can't go wrong. We walked in and I felt I was being drawn in by the decor, the ambience and the general vibe of the place, which is always a good thing. This visit of ours was to see a burlesque show by Cherie Babe and her group on Sunday night. I must say we thoroughly enjoyed the event. The seating was a bit cramped but it added to the character of that place. What we liked also was the service of the bar staff. We ordered old fashioned, the cocktail and if you've ever made one of those or seen someone make one you know it's a thankless job. We were quite impressed that the girl put in a lot of effort to ensure our cocktails turned out right and was very polite and friendly throughout. Like I've said before, getting a good level of customer service in these times is always a pleasant surprise. We were also quite pleasantly surprised when the lead performer of the night, Cherie Babe actually spoke to us for a good few minutes on the way out and took the time to find out if we'd really enjoyed the show and so on and so forth. All in all I had a good experience and would definitely go back again. Only four stars and not a five this time because the seating for the actual show was cramped and my view of the stage wasn't the clearest of all. As always I hope they continue to maintain these high standards for a long time to come.

It is the only Jazz bar in Manchester where they have live jazz bands EVERYDAY of the week! It is free to enter (apart from special nights) and they do free pizza during happy hours (5-8) with any two alcoholic drinks (that sounds brilliant). They also have salsa classes here every Tuesday with a live band, I love dancing and jazz so it was a perfect combination for me. The red interiors and decor gives the place a very retro feel. The crowd is usually decent and trendy (not seen any chavs here) usually get louder post midnight. The drinks are reasonably cheap and so is the food! What I like most about this place is the chilled out and un-pretentious vibe here!

Partial to the odd turtle neck? Groovy smoothie..... Own a berry and some turtle shell rims? Uptight and out of sight hip cat..... Want to know where you can keep it unstructured and cool? If Jazz is your thing or you just wanna swing then head down to the Northern Quarters only dedicated Jazz bar Matt & Phreds daddio and keep it loose goose. Right on....... Joking aside, this is a really top night spot. Completely free of the intimidating pretentiousness that has unfortunately become linked with Jazz bars and really accessible to anyone wanting to just try something new. The decor and music combine to make this one of the most atmospheric small venues you'll ever go. Definitely worth a break from the norm.

Matt 'N' Phreds Jazz club is a real gem, that's really pretty well hidden in central Manchester. Nowadays they don't even have a front door, so you have to walk down the alley at the back to get in. It is however the best jazz club in Manchester. It's a little pricey, but the entertainment is free, so it evens itself out. They have live music 7 nights a week. If you arrive later than 9-10 you may have to pay a cover charge of £5 or so, depending upon the day. They have a good selection of continental beers, and do great bar snacks and pizza (the food is reasonably priced). It's pretty small, but the crowd is cool.

Watch out Erin! There's a ghost behind you!

Yo forget the live music at 9pm and get here at 6pm for the two pints and a free pizza deal. There's limited seating (most of its reserved) so get there early. Only reason to come!

My suggestion was actually a hit. I did my indecisive alterego very proud. There are many quality club nights organised by the Lost and Found name and this was no exception. Dance off, being £1 entry, sold it for me. Doubles for £3, a range of sambucas £1.50? Messy. Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

You'll often find a queue outside Mint Lounge on the weekends, revellers eagerly anticipating a night of soul, funk, jazz and electric disco. There's a couple of bar rooms and a main dance floor which gives off an underground vibe. They also have live bands playing here and the entry prices are reasonable - from £4-7 depending on the night and how early you arrive. Expect a mix of the glamorous, fun loving, music loving cool kids in this place. Those who I seem to be able to always knock back a bit of random conversation with. The two club nights are Clique on a Friday and Funkademia on a Saturday both come recommended. Clique has been described as "Manchester's 21st Century disotheque playing alternative dance, electropop and digital disco" and has been voted Manchester's best club night many a times by the MEN. Funkademia, as you can probably guess, is more about the soul, funk and grooves. Mint Lounge has been accredited by Mix Mag as one of the COUNTRY's top ten clubs (2007). Not even just in Manchester. I'm not sure about that, for purely the bathroom situation. I'm just not a fan of checking out my shine in front of the bloke I had my eye on, or coming out of a loo along with a trail of toilet paper to find a mass of men and women trying not to smirk at me. It's bad enough in the girl's only toilets. I quickly get over this slight glitch and frequent the place more often than any other of Manchester's offerings I must admit. Watch out for special nights and guest djs, Hot Chip recently made an appearance, was tres bon to say the least.

I had been to Sakura back in my uni days and remembered having a great night with my best girl friends (may be it was all about the company). I was again invited for a Greek Carnival night there last month, so decided to go because it was a Friday night, I had no plans and a carnival sounded like fun! Every time I get off the cab on Deansgate I have a bad experience (some drunk girl shouts at me or I see someone throwing up right in front of me at 11 pm) so that night could not be an exception obviously! I got off the cab and witnessed two guys (wearing super tight tee-shirts with a fake tan and looked like they walked out of an episode of Jersey Shore) fist fighting each other. Moving on, I enter Sakura and the whole atmosphere was very much like a trance Greek carnival -- Every one was dressed up in fancy dress with neon sticks in their hand and the club. The drinks were reasonably priced so I could afford quite a few and the music was good enough to dance to after a few cocktails. The crowd was very international and mostly filled with students. Verdict: I definitely had a good time, and come on what else can we expect from a night club in Deansgate Locks? I asked the girl if they had Asahi beer - a well known Japanese beer. Since its a "Japanese bar/club", I expected them to have it. She didn't even know what Asahi was. I have only ever been to Alter Ego for a Poptastic night, so I cannot really comment on how the club operates during the rest of the week, but, on a Tuesday, or Saturday, the place becomes alive with classic tracks and anthems. The venue is an interesting one, as it is underground, and split between two main dance floor areas. The dance floors are of a good size, and are surrounded by small seating areas for those wishing just to sit, or those in need of a breather after exerting themselves a bit too much! These seating areas also play host to trysts between clubbers, which can be either annoying, or very funny, depending on your level of sobriety. The toilets in the venue can be a bit awkward to navigate your way around, as they stem off a narrow corridor towards the rear of both dance floors, but this is only a major problem when the queues to use them become to huge they spread out of the toilets themselves, when the corridor can then become blocked.
