The Night and Day Cafe is one of those places that people love to talk about. And its true, you always feel like you don't spend enough time there, like this is the kind of place you would own if you could. It's on Oldham Street, slap bang between shops selling records and shops selling vintage dresses. So you've got your gig research plus your gig outfit right there, heaven.. The staff are friendly - even the staff on their Box Office phone line are, like, super duper friendly and you never expect that. I phoned once to check if a band were playing because one website said yes, the other no and the guy told me he'd make sure that the unofficial rubbish was taken down straight away.. It is clear that the organisers have a great collective ear for new music. Many bands that have played the Night and Day have gone on to conquer the country. They booked Speech Debelle to play this week long before the words 'Mercury' and 'Prize' crossed her path, for instance. I'm looking forward to Everything Everything and their John Peel Day.

You know how some cafes and bars, you can just sit and eat and drink and hang out for hours on end, progressing from lunch to coffee to a light dinner, then booze, and you step outside and realise that somehow, 6 hours have. Well, Night & Day is one of these places. You 'pop in' for a quick sandwich, and you emerge, squffily peering at the sky, wondering why it's dark. Maybe that's why they call it Night & Day... The food at N&D isn't fabulous Michelin-starred fare, but it is tasty. Yes, the service is slow and you might, at busier times, have to go back up to the bar and ask "where is my food?" but it just adds to the general laid-back feel that permeates N&D. Foodwise, there's always a great range of sandwiches, and the soup of the day is usually pretty tasty, though occasionally on the salty side. My personal fave is the burger, served with chunky chips and a nice salad for around £5. In terms of booze, N&D have pretty much everything you might want; a good range of bottled and draft beers, decent wine and a great array of spirits. The G&Ts here are particularly good, even when it's gig time and they're served in a plastic cup. Music-wise, expect to be listening to Belle & Seb, Animal Collective and the like during the day, with a pretty much -anything-goes policy at night. Gigs here are great, and past gig nights have seen N&D play host to, well, most good bands. It's always good to check out the gig listings, as the likelihood is that most of the bands that play here will either sink into obscurity, or their next gig will be highly expensive and sold out. By far one of my favourite places to hang out, night or day.

I love the Night & Day cafe! Situated on shabby chic Oldham st, it is a big and battered all-day hangout that has the character of a New York night spot. It is the type of place where you can turn up for coffee and newspapers early on, move onto cold drinks as it gets dark enough to be acceptable, stick around for a live band later in the evening then move onto an unexpected jaunt around the boho Northern Quarter afterwards. I've just convinced myself, I'm off there right now!

This place is a great hang out. I love the effortless shabby chic interior. I feel like I am sitting in a warehouse in HeartBreak high every time I visit. Last time I went I ordered pitta hummus and olives from the bar menu (£2.99) and a large pear cider ......followed by a scrumptious chocolate cake. The best thing about this place is that it supports local artists and in doing so it has created a great atmosphere. The place is buzzing and the staff are really friendly. Unlike a lot of bars in the Northern Quarter that have put up there prices due to the recent popularity of the area this place has remained fairly cheap. Get down to Night and Day for a great cafe during the day and live music and fun at night. Does what it says on the tin!

One of the worst breakfasts that I've ever paid for!

I'm a little stuck in 2 minds about my review of Night and Day as I've had 2 completely different experiences here so I've had to go with the average(which should be 2.5 stars). As a music venue I had an absolutely great time. Up and coming bands being made readily accessible with cheap entrance fees and decent music pumped out on the stereo when there's no one up on stage. Some of the bands who have played here have gone on to be massive so you could well catch the next big thing here in a tiny room. Sadly this was all let down on my last visit when I was slightly delicate on a Sunday afternoon and needed to grab some food before the train. I tried to order some food but was told that they were only serving the breakfast menu. This would have been fair enough if it meant that they were going to be churning out plate after plate of tasty breakfast food. What I was actually served was quite possibly the worst breakfast I have ever paid for. £6.50 for one slice of toast, 2 overcooked poached eggs, some terrible boiled ham (I'm loathe to call it bacon) and some split hollandaise is not a great deal. I'd love to say that the other guys I was with had a much better experience but sadly not. If you are after an evening of entertainment definitely check this place out but just make sure that you've eaten beforehand!

There are two entrances to Dive (Tib St. and Oldham), but I came in through the smaller Tib St…read more entrance, which has a "grungier" sort of feel to it. Best way to enter into a place called "Dive" is through the seedy back door, in my opinion. Going down the stairs you see that seedy quickly turns to classy with awesome wooden interior with a slight Americana feel to it. It's a cool mix of cozy and warm while being fresh and new, with an overall laid back atmosphere. Try to picture something being rough but varnished at the same time. Spool-style wooden tables and high chairs are all over the place, so there isn't a lack of areas to sit and rest your drinks. If you want more of a lounge feel, there are a few alcoves - one with its own bar and big screen TV with leather red/brown couches. It's cut off a bit from the main area with a red curtain partially closing it off, so you can get a slight escape from the rest of the area. The Americana feel isn't overly-apparent just by the decorations and atmosphere, but it becomes obvious that's what they're going for when you see the staff dress. Waitresses are dressed in a 80's TV-style casual southern belle fashion, while bar staff is reminiscent of lumberjacks or Rosie the Riveter, even accompanied with leather half-aprons that look like they could double for a new style of utility belt. Cocktails cost £7.50, and are pretty generous with the liquor - definitely not weak, even though they remain flavourful. I started with a Gin and Juice (Beefeater Gin, cloudy apple juice, elderflower), and moved on to ginger beer and Blind Pig flavoured ciders. Even the gin and tonic or bourbon and coke were pleasantly strong without overpowering things. They've got great food to choose from, and good lunch specials if you're wanting a bite without the evening party atmosphere. The macaroni and cheese balls are a cool take on an American classic, but be careful - they're served hot! That's a common theme with the food it seems; the crab cakes were delightfully crispy/crunchy on the outside while the interior was a bit too hot, but creamy and full of flavour. There was a live band the night we went, with Anna Sin playing 50's and 60's jams. Their opening song was Route 66, and they killed it throughout the rest of the night with classic hits. This definitely fit the atmosphere, but I was less enthused by the DJ music. The house music seemed to be an eclectic mix and fairly disjointed, but got better as the night ran on. It feels like it'd be perfectly suited to some jazz or blues music, or 50's to 80's classic American songs. Dive is open until 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings, and while the phone reception is poor (usually cuts out as soon as you get downstairs), they've got free wifi so you can connect that way when you get in. As a disclaimer: this is a review based on the launch party I was able to attend. That being said, I've got a strong feeling I'll be back to give an updated review soon! Very tempted to come back for lunch to get a proper meal in.

It has a very strong American theme, the staff wore plaid shirts and jeans. Some female staff dress very southern like Daisy Duke. American tunes, American drinks - like Bourbon, Root beers, etc. There is one main bar and a smaller bar in the lounge area. A big dancing floor, live band and DJ area. A few big tables in booth style set-up, and some high tables around the bar. It was a fun night but the tunes were a bit off - live band was playing American oldies, DJ was playing was playing random American songs but I feel some rock or 80's would suit things better.

They would have understood if I'd chosen a restaurant or a nightclub with a dancefloor but a bar that used to be a public toilet? That threw them completely. To digress, The Temple used to be a public toilet many moons ago. In the nineties however, it was converted into Manchester's smallest bar. Accessed via a blink-or-miss-it stairwell off Oxford Street, it's a bustling place with an intimate atmosphere and shabby chic interior. There's a tiny bar with great bottled beers and spirits, a cool jukebox with lots of Mancunian rock and roll, a cluster of seats for about 20 people and standing room for about 20 more. I would love to bring one of those conservative Hindu priests here just to see his reaction (would be comedy gold). I am a big fan of its sister bar Big Hands and that is one of the reason I decided to visit Temple (obviously the name intrigued me too). They play funky rock music, have a good selection of beers and good enough seating arrangements (don't expect to get a seat post 8 pm on any day). Yes the bar is quite crammed and small but that kind of has its own appeal according to me -- It definitely keeps you warm on a chilly winter night! The beers are reasonably priced, though some may say its expensive for the kind of space it has, but I guess being ghetto and grungy is upmarket these days (explains the price). The crowd is usually quite nice, mostly working professionals around oxford road, you might find the masters and Phd students hanging out here too but definitely not a place where 18 year old's are screaming and shouting! Verdict: You should definitely go there for the novelty of the concept!

The breakfast that I had at the pub was also very good and the service was very hospitable, both from the pub and hotel hosts. The only criticism I have is that the water in the shower kept going from warm to cold, which during the winter is unpleasant. Anyway, I think Fab Manchester deserves a second chance as we went in there quite early on in the evening and I guess it doesn't really come to life until a bit later. I will say that I was a tad disappointed in the state of it though and reckon they could do with putting some money into giving it a revamp, or even just a good scrub. Crikey, I think I'm turning into a snob.

Why people want to go to 5th Avenue I don't know, but I also know that I'd rather be there than in Overdraught. The music changes from night to night but the unifying characteristic is that its too loud. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an old man, its just that the level of music should be in an appropriate proportion to the number of people in the club, and here it isn't. Its also very grimy. Having said that, its not bad price wise and they are open till very very late (I've heard 4am, though I never stay out that late, honestly not an old man...). If you do like the music then you'd probably find it a pretty good place. For that reason, i'm going for a moderate review.

It gave me a warmer alternative than the obvious standing out though my heart still wanted to enter 5th Ave very very much! The reluctance and disappointment soon turned into tuned fun and games! The bar was fairly crowded playing a mix of chart music and the Indie which I thoroughly love. It kept it going and the drinks were pretty great as well- £2.70 for a double vod-bull. What was amazing about this place was its very casual approach in terms of looks, more like a den you would hang out at, and the arcades it had! Being drunk and giving a go at pool was the peak. It made the night the epitome of fun watching people trying to reach stability at some point to try and get some balls! The crowd was obviously all the people, who like me, got tired of the queue outside. I personally had a great time and think one should definitely try it as an alternative!
