It is a small hotel with a restaurant. It's rustic, as you might expect, since it's in a skiing and recreation area in the alps. The rooms are simply furnished, but comfortable and homey. The restaurant serves huge portions of a delicious version of French country cooking. I had a beef stew served over ravioli, tasty and filling. No one here speaks English. I was the only one in the restaurant that wasn't French. Even though I don't speak French, the staff were friendly and patient and we were able to communicate enough for me to check in to my room and to have dinner in the restaurant. Overall, I would definitely recommend l'Escapade if you are looking for a comfortable place to stay in the Maritime Alps.

However,the people who work here are super nice and the hotel restaurant serves up delicious French country cooking. I don't recall hearing any of the staff speak English, however. I would not hesitate to stay here again. It's the perfect spot for hikers and anyone else who doesn't need luxury accommodations.

There was one other couple, but I'm sure it gets much more crowded during the summer. I ordered the special for the day which was salmon. It was very Asian-inspired--it had little bok choy, and daikon and was served in a nice broth. The salmon was cooked perfectly. And it. was really, really delicious. I also ordered a side of artichoke. It was drizzled with pesto and pine nuts. Also very good. I sampled a couple of their desserts.... yep, you guessed it, they were delicious. The waiter guy helping us was very friendly and his English was good. We had still water which came out of the fountain and a carafe of rosé. Definitely a nice meal to have if you find yourself in town.

The starters were brought out and 2/3 were the wrong item. This was not a problem and we asked them to be corrected. The main courses came out and they were ALL incorrect, again. The waiter then rudely addressed a member of our party saying the item they ordered wasn't available after trying to give them the wrong item, this was 40 minutes after we had ordered the item. After a few excuses from the waiter the manager was sent over. The manager in the suit was extremely rude and raised his voice with the member of the party who was given the wrong food twice without apology. There were inconsistent and inadequate excuses given by different members of staff. Our waiter stopped serving our table for the rest of the evening we were not addressed by our waiter or the manager. We were served by a lovely young woman did a good job and was left to clean up the mess, thank you to her for the good service The sommelier in the suit was lovely and gave great wine recommendations, he should be promoted. Overall this experience missed the mark. There was no apology and no effort to make the situation right. 0 stars.

If by chance you are looking for home-style country looking in the Var region of Provence, this is the place to go! There is no menu. What they's cookin, it what you's eatin. They really don't sound like American southerners but they are country folk in those perched villages. Anyway, we barely understood what was on the menu but we looked around at what everyone else on the patio was eating and went along for the ride. Actually, we were going to say yes and eat there there no matter what anyway. By the way, the patio was one of the nicest we've been to in the region... shaded, clean, quiet, quaint. The setting, service and meal was awesome. The eats were 3-courses. It started with a nice salad that went on to breaded veal that was fried with a mountain of amazing green beans... hearty! The deserts were a large cream-filled pastry and a chocolate opera cake that was like tiramisu but with less alcohol and more chocolate. The accompanying bread was good too... not the tasteless and/or dry stuff you can occasionally get at some restaurants in Provence... France... Europe. In the end, the mean with a half-carafe (half bottle) of the house rosé wine was just 30€ I think... an amazingly inexpensive lunch that rocked our world. This trip in Provence was 3 weeks (last one was 5 weeks) and this restaurant has become my favorite dining experience over the 2 trips. Merci beaucoup.
