    Moxy - Queen bed room

    Moxy

I stayed at the Moxy in Cork just for two nights and I really enjoyed myself. This is a brand new…read moreMoxy which I assume took over another former hotel. The place is really nice inside with lots of updates and the trendy decor you'd expect from a Moxy. I've stayed in a few Moxy hotels in NYC and enjoyed my stays. The rooms are always small but economical with plenty of storage for such a small space. That is exactly how this Moxy was, too. The bed was very comfy and the TV had the best selection of channels I experienced from any hotel in Ireland during my stay. There's a desk that folds out from the wall, a small stool, a nook with a seat, and hooks for you to hang your clothes. I really appreciated the lighting since it wasn't just overwhelming overhead lighting. The location is unbeatable as well. Right in the middle of Cork overlooking the river. There's plenty of great bars and restaurants on that side of the river but even more fun places to explore across the way. Everything I wanted to eat and drink was no more than a 15 minute walk away. The reason for the four stars is that the shower, while very nice upon first look, leaked water onto the floor. This was one of the only hotels I saw in Ireland which had a full glass shower door which closed (hallelujah!) but it somehow STILL leaked water onto the ground. Upon brief inspection, I believe the cause may be some sort of construction error. The glass didn't seem to be properly fitted. The other issue I had was with the bathroom door. It's one of those annoying barn doors which slides and this particular door would get stuck and jam if closed all the way. Being alone in the room, this wasn't a make or break issue but if I was traveling with alongside someone, I'd definitely want that door to shut properly and I definitely wouldn't want to be concerned with how I'd get back out. The bar downstairs is really cute and I found all the staff members to be absolutely delightful. From check-in to cocktails to asking questions about the bus system and mailing a postcard, every single staff member was so friendly and helpful. I especially enjoyed my time spent with the bartenders, Olivia and Chris, who provided great drinks and even greater conversation. Being that it's a new hotel, I'm guessing there's just a few kinks that need to be worked out in terms of construction. I'd probably still return despite those issues. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

I wanted to take a moment to recognize Mark Tobin at the Residence Inn & Moxy Hotels in Cork for…read morehis outstanding customer service. My sister, a recent widow, was traveling with her daughter--who is studying abroad in Ireland--and her son. When they arrived at the hotel, they discovered that all the rooms at the Moxy only accommodate two people. As a Titanium member with over 100 nights at Marriott last year, I travel frequently, yet I had never stayed at a Moxy before and didn't realize this detail wasn't clearly stated on the website. To complicate matters, both the Moxy and its sister hotel were fully booked. The only option given was to book a second room, which wasn't ideal for their situation and would have doubled their travel budget. My sister called me in tears, unsure of what to do. That's when I reached out and spoke with Mark. He was smart, kind, and incredibly resourceful. Despite the sold-out status, he went above and beyond--checking carefully until he found a solution. He located a room at the Residence Inn that was out of service due to a minor issue (a hairdryer needed replacing) and was able to move my sister and her family there. This completely saved the day and made all the difference for my sister during an already emotional trip. Instead of simply saying, "We're sold out," Mark took the extra steps to find a solution--something that should be the gold standard in hospitality. His efforts should be recognized and celebrated. Marriott prides itself on exceptional service, and Mark truly embodies that. Thank you, Mark, for your professionalism, kindness, and dedication to guests. I hope Marriott acknowledges and rewards your excellence!

If you don't want the full Irish (which i must say is good as they serve mushrooms, potatoes, bacon etc) there is not much other choice. I love fruit for my breakfast and bowls of tinned fruit is a poor substitute. The fruit salad only had apples, mandarin and a few bits of melon in it which is had to pick out. So i had to fill up on hot breakfast stuff and coffee. As i don't eat much in the way of bread that was ok but for my children they were disappointed not to find any pastries. The location of the hotel is just off the M8 but really there is no-where else in the little town/village other than a shop to see. Thurles is about 10 minutes drive away which is one of those grid-locked towns which should have a by-pass so that people visiting the town are not stuck in lines and lines of traffic. The evening meals in the hotel are rather expensive and without any neighbouring rivals they can be as there is not even a take-away near by that i could see. But the food we did eat was lovely, my daughter had a steak from the kids menu which was really nice. The chicken wings though were SPICY, so much so they could only be eaten with a side order of a jug of water! The pool is nice enough and the staff were very friendly, they even gave us swimming hats! Sadly i did'nt get a chance to use the gym as i had two kids with me but it looked quite good for a hotel gym. The staff on checkout were helpful, one of them kindly rang a couple of petfarms to see if they were open. They did have free wi-fi but it kept going off on me and was only really good in the bar area.
