I had dinner at Bishop's Buttery and it was excellent. The whole experience took about two hours. The service was good throughout the dinner, but at the end I could not get my bill! And I know that in Ireland, you need to ask for the bill, but I sat there for 20 minutes without anyone even making eye contact with me or checking in on me. So I was kind of annoyed at the end. I also used the spa, which was very lovely. You can use the indoor/outdoor pool, sauna, steam room, and experiential showers without booking a treatment and I love doing those things. This place was our hands-down favorite, a perfect combination of charm, convenience and friendliness. We arrived in town without reservations, and the only hotel was booked. They recommended Copperfield House around the corner. The upstairs room was perfect, with a modern hotel-like bathroom and comfortable beds. The dining room was elegant with a great garden view, and breakfast was superb. Josephine offered to get up quite early on Sunday morning to make us breakfast on our last day as we had to drive to Dublin to catch the flight home. We'd recommend this place to anyone.

There was a rather elderly fellow sitting next to the Mister at the bar and he overheard us discussing our engagement. Well - we had a new friend! Mister dragged himself to bed much later. Turns out our new BFF had just walked down for a paper and his wife had to come collect him. We've been in Carrick for three weeks, staying nearby, and walk to the hotel's restaurant nearly every day for tea, coffee, scones, and sometimes for lunch or dinner. The Carraig has the best wi-fi internet we've found in the town, giving us a chance to remain in touch with home in the U.S. The staff here is the best, friendly, helpful. They're open from about 8 AM until late, and can pull a really nice pint (or half-pint if you prefer) of Guinness, as well as a selection of other beverages. We haven't had occasion to use the hotel facilities, but no doubt they'll measure up to the downstairs. Thanks to all the staff for providing a home away from home.

Then we came back later for music as suggested by the front desk, and we were ignored while standing at the bar, sitting at the bar, and hovering around the door. It was real "we know you are trying to be polite but we are not meeting your eyes so please get out" energy. Maybe we did something "wrong" I don't know, but it was still very strange. But the hotel is great and there are plenty of pubs a stone's throw from the front door.

Then trying to order from the restaurant I found a notice that said something about NOT DRINKING THE WATER and to either call or literally PAY for bottled water! You call, you will get a bucket of water with ice. Don't bother asking because I spoke with the owner after walking 1/4 a mile to buy bottled water ... doesn't really know why we can't drink the water-- or what's in it ---apparently that's just what people say in Ireland...seriously! I asked why and when they tested it and the OWNER said he did not know! I'm a Chef AND a doctor and this makes absolutely NO sense! Keep away from the hotel and drinking anything here!! Anyone who claims to own a hotel- and doesn't know everything about his own hotel history and potential water contamination should NOT be allowed to own a hotel! The county health department should take notice that there is NO notice anywhere except In an old folder, he joked about in our conversation, that I thought was for room service that says they strongly recommend NOT drinking the water! This should be on the advisory for the hotel upon booking a reservation-period! I am appalled that I had to walk to get water because anything bottled was for SALE - NOT for the guests! I was explicitly told this more than once. Stay away! This is NOT safe nor acceptable! I will post a follow up upon my departure! Our room was sub par, cigarette burns in the tub. No extra toilet paper in the room when we ran out. And the broken thermostat was blinking the whole stay, begging for a filter change...gross. The china was also dirty at breakfast. The only pluses I will give to this place: the sitting and dining rooms were decorated well and the OTHER staff (NOT the receptionist/bartender) were pleasant. Owner also seemed nice.
