It's a bar people! Some people give the 1 star ratings because of a specific crappy experience. The drinks were great. It was super chill and clean. They had bouncers checking ID's right in front so there is some safety built in. It seemed to be the least packed when I went on Saturday night so it's a nice break in between the Loud places. I was really excited about this place when I read about it in a local magazine. When finally I was able to make my way there, I was diggin' the little Austiny-cantina (as opposed to a real cantina) vibe they had created. It was cute. However what wasn't cute was the $32.00 bar tab for TWO SHOTS of Mezcal. That's right SHOTS, $16.00 a piece. I thought the bartender had made a mistake. Perhaps gotten me mixed up with someone who had ordered more drinks, but nope. Seriously, as a native South Texan, someone who has purchased bottles of mezcal and tequila countless times on both sides of the border, I was offended at such ridiculously over-priced drinks (SHOTS). Oh, OH, that's right...this is Austin, where you can throw the label "artisanal", "ethnic" or "organic" on something then charge double (or in this case, beyond) for it. Here's a thought: Maybe I should go buy a little trailer, slap some pictures of dancing muertos , La Virgin de Guadalupe y Frida Kahlo on it, and sell snow cones labeled as "Raspas" (organic and artisanal, of course) for $7.00 a pop downtown....the closer to Whole Foods, the better. Shhh ... don't tell. For my 100th review, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. They aren't advertising, but word of mouth and sheer proximity to Lustre Pearl bar are drawing curious customers to Clive - a beautiful, new bar on Rainey Street. Whereas the vibe down the street at Lustre Pearl is indie frat (read: junior varsity), Clive is for those who have graduated and joined the varsity club. This whisky and beer bar has a serious and sophisticated feeling. While the warm (and delicious-smelling) wood paneled walls initially draw you in, it is the more subtle details that really keep your attention. The area above the front of the bar is a sleek glass case - a veritable menagerie of alchol. If you are playing darts and happen to look up, take notice of the chandeliers made of frosted Patron bottles. White chairs out on the patio feature peacocks that bear a striking (and possibly identical) resemblance to those that were at The Peacock Lounge (R.I.P.) Speaking of patios and lounging, Clive's wooden patio, amazing trees, and neighborhood location invite you to sit back, relax, and settle into a conversation. The truth is, the secret is out, the patio is open, and Clive is on the rise. read more

I don't know why but out of all the places I frequent Clive for me is very forgettable. It isn't that Clive isn't nice because it is. The vibe is not a dive, it is more swanky with lots of outdoor seating. It doesn't really seem like an Austin bar to me but more something you would find in Houston or Dallas, including a lot of the people who go here. Preppy types is what you will find, and a recent visit to the bar found a large table of 20-something guys dressed up in polo tops singing the musical instrument part of the chorus of Passion Pit's song "Sleepy Head" at the top of their lungs. Annoying. I do really like the uniqueness of Bar Illegal which used to just be an open, empty building on Clive's property and is probably the only reason why I would bother to come back here. Nothing bad towards Clive, just my personal taste and preference. read more

Last night we opted to avoid the ACL crowds and head over to Rainey Street to check out the newly opened Clive Bar. Like Lustre Pearl, it's an old house that's been redone and made into a bar. The thing that makes it unique is the beautiful wood throughout. It's seriously so pretty, and it smells awesome. They also didn't take down a big old tree when building all of the decking, and instead, build the deck around the tree and even part of the roof, where the tree goes straight through! There was a really cool dragon bike thing that hopefully someone will post a picture of at some point. I don't know if it will be a permanent fixture or was just there for opening night, but I didn't get a chance to ride it and I really want to! No telling what the crowd at this place is going to be like as it finds it's footing in what looks to be a new batch of bars on Rainey Street, but I'll be happy to go back and check it out a few times for everyone and report back when they get some additional seating. read more

This bar is so laid back and great for just hanging out. The outdoor is spacious with plenty of tables. No service here. Order at the window and pick up your own drinks. Not really a good place for people watching or pretentiousness. It's just a bar with friendly bartenders. Beers are better than the martinis. Come with friends, don't come alone. I write updates for businesses only when it's absolutely necessary. And based on my previous review and subsequent experiences, Clive is in serious need of a revamp. Clive has easily become my favorite bar on Rainey Street. There's something about its casual-yet-elegant schtick that really speaks to me. Whereas Lustre Pearl can get a little rowdy, and Bar 96 is a glorified frat house, I always find my niche in the classy vibe that is Clive. Recently, my friend Kirk from church had come to visit Austin from North Carolina. The fact that Kirk needs to move back to Austin is an entirely separate narrative, but it's true. Anyways, so many places had opened since he left us for NC, with Clive being one of them. So after church, we did the brunch-OilCan's-Clive trifecta to have him see how it turned out. The bar was hosting a "bourbon + bluegrass" event that featured bourbon specials and a bluegrass band that I felt I was too overdressed to even be listening to. My friends ordered mint julips and Jack Daniels neat while I settled in and watched an alarmingly skinny girl in hideous purple pants dance with a guy and his dog, while a group of Asian guys pounded shot after shot and were clearly not going to make it to work the next day. Also, this was all taking place while it was still daylight, and I wasn't drinking. OK, you know what? This experience is not what I had in mind when I said I loved Clive. Moving on. First of all, this place is infinitely better at night. I love the muted ambiance and the bustling (but not deafening) sounds of the patio. Secondly, I am VERY impressed with the bar staff. Each and every time, these boys are friendly and pour a nice cocktail. They make you feel right at home, which is something I look for when boozing at a straight bar. First rate service, for sure. My only gripe? After 2 AM they won't let you back in the bar to take a wicked piss when your cab is taking its sweet time. I know it's a rule for all establishments, but I wasn't kidding when I said I had to go. One of the guys said I could pee behind a sign across the street. Which I did. It wasn't my proudest moment, but 45 minutes for a taxi was ridiculous. At least I had their blessing. In any event...I'm upgrading my tepid 3 star ranking to 5 big ones...and Clive definitely deserves it. I look forward to returning. read more

Warning: This review may be influenced by the weather. But I was pretty disappointed by the Clive Bar. I guess I had it in my mind that this place, opened by the folks that own Lustre Pearl, would be similar to that house, but more "mature". I pictured another house with more of an office/library feel to it, with all the dark woods everyone talks about. But when it's crowded and dark, you can't discern these finer points (I didn't even notice the chandelier). I love Lustre Pearl and to be fair, we started our night there, our birthday party comfortably ensconced in one of the quaint ROOMS in the house. No crowding, nice drinks, easy to converse, bathroom accessible (hell the two bday girls even went in the restroom and swapped clothes as a joke!). We meandered over to check out Clive around midnight and it was Packed. Which wouldn't have been a problem if the place was bigger. The doors were all open and when we walked in, I immediately wanted to explore. It took me twelve seconds because there's nothing to see. L-shaped bar, few tables and yes the cool white peacock chairs. There's no rooms off the bar area, nothing. All of the space is outside and when outside ain't great, well...... I wouldn't mind coming back in nicer weather, but I don't really see the point of leaving Lustre for this spot. read more

Rainy street is where it's at, and my first stop over there was Clive. Clive has a great vibe, crowd, and decor. I came here stuffed from dinner, but was still more than delighted spending time here with my crew. It was packed, but it didn't stop us from mingling and getting to know people. It helps when one of your friends accidentally kicks an emergency water valve off. It makes an excellent opportunity to start up a conversation with people. "Can you believe that asshole? Who's he with?" Located right on the corner, you can scope out how the rest of the action on the street looks. read more

This is a nice addition to the Rainey St area. If I could describe the bar compared to Lustre Pearl, it's a little more sophisticated. The decor is wood...wood and more wood. Its smells like my mother's hope chest. The house is smaller but they have an awesome deck to lounge on and a decent side yard. Absolutely class. Every detail has been well-executed -- from the interior wood-grain cabin composition with a superbly polished, long L-shaped bar to the thoughtfully selected draught options of local and craft brews (including seasonal offering from the highly underrated Austin brewery "512"). The collection of bartenders and staff at Clive is masterful. They each represent the enthusiasm behind the project and sell you on it. I'm fucking convinced. Heck, they even champion their pissers, which admittedly having visited them just to see the hype, are magnificent; with penny tiled floors and subway tiled walls. The owner -- via info from the man behind the man, Todd -- has masterfully created playlist-after-playlist of indie favorites, northern soul, dub, and nostalgic hip-hop. This may actually be my favorite nuance about the entire place. Good jams keep the spirit alive. Overall, Clive Bar has a very VERY keen sense of itself, and one just feels cool being there; as in a cabin full of Fantastic Mr. Foxes. A trait that only a few bars can marvelously pull off. read more

I am just totally in love with Clive. The whole Rainey St area is obviously my favorite semi-grownup social scene on a weekend night, but Clive is EXTRA special in my opinion. It has a very warm seduction to it that makes me like it more than Lustre Pearl. I'd say Clive is much better for a more intimate evening with a date or a few friends while Lustre Pearl is for your more rowdy cool hipster friends (I don't have any of those :( ). Clive always seems packed, yet I can always find a table to sit at and chat. It's like magic. Yes, Clive is magic. It's not too loud but you also won't find a moment of awkward silence. Just the perfect atmosphere to have a classy but not up-tight evening. And then you can stumble across the street to Graj Mahal and stuff your face full of naan and chicken makhani. So now, as I slowly get closer to leaving my dirrty sixth college ways, I'm so happy to have found places like Clive that make growing up exciting. It makes me feel like a cool grown-up, not a regular grown up. Parking obviously blows, but we've always managed to find street parking. read more

Like a mysterious stranger--Clive drew me in with its understated elegance and intriguing ambiance. My curiosity was piqued--I wanted to hear the story that the deep wood interior begged to tell. I wanted to know the history of the walls of the house the bar resides in. Clive was the first stop of our Friday adventure. It was a PERFECT start to the evening--not too crowded, low lighting, beautiful interior. Be sure to look up at the chandeliers when you walk in--they are STUNNING (made out of old liquor bottles). The most standout aspect of Clive for me was the beauty and simplicity of the decor. Dark stained wood was everywhere, giving the impression of accomplishment and warmth. The bartender that helped us was great--he gave us all crap when we switched from round one of vodka tonics/gin and tonics to round two of pearl lights (only $2!). Well deserved, ha-it was a pretty rough transition. The four of us had been standing in a corner chatting--really enjoying the atmosphere-when that same bartender came up to us and invited us over to another area where he had pulled 4 stools together as a mini lounge/conversation nook. We had been confused a few minutes earlier because he had come right next to us and taken the stool that was behind us...we thought it was strange that he would take that away. Only to be surprised that he had put that seating group FOR us, not just for looks. I am so excited for Bridget to keep opening up places in the Rainey district-- I love the undercurrent of mystery and charm in both Clive and Lustre Pearl. This family of bars is a welcome addition to Austin's repertoire. read more

Texas doesn't have much of a winter but when we do everyone LOVES being by those outdoor heaters. I think it has something to do with that whole loving being cold as long as you can bundle up theory. Well, Clive Bar seems to have read our minds. We already love the intriguing white leather and dark wood of the inside and now they set up a more cozy environment outside. This place is a gem. I don't usually ogle over staff, but the bartenders here might be the friendliest in Austin. They are also knowledgeable, fast and genuine. Something I particularly appreciate is the huge outdoor space that never seems to get too crowded. The music is some of my favorite artists that I never expect to hear out on the town, and they kindly don't play it too loud to inhibit conversation. On my first visit I was afraid that this place would be too fancy for my taste, but it turns out they cater to poor people like me - without attracting the college crowd. And because of the awesome food offerings of Graj Mahal, I find myself here pretty often. Good job, Clive. I think we'll be friends for a long time. read more

In my mind, Clive is pretty forgettable compared to the other bars around. I go sometimes, but not as often as I do the surrounding establishments. I didn't really have a reason to write a review at all, until the last time I went in there and the bartenders totally jacked up my martini. There are a few key drinks I think all bartenders should know how to make. A martini is one of them. I asked the bartender for a dirty bombay martini. He turns, pours the appropriate amount of gin, pours a SHIT TON of vermouth (I deluded myself into thinking it was olive juice) and gives me back the martini. I take a sip and literally gag. What the hell? He disappears, I flag down another bartender after waiting a while, he asks what my problem is and I explain. Him: "So... what do you want me to do?" Me: "Uh, make me a dirty martini...?" He turns, gives me a splash of gin (no lie, do these guys not realize we can see them?) pours in a SHIT TON of olive juice, and gives me my drink. I blatantly stare. I took a sip, cocked my head, and say "No, you don't understand. I don't dislike gin, I want a martini, not olive juice." Him: "Uh... I don't really get what you want." Me: "Can I just have a pint glass and I'll combine the two drinks and we can call it even?" He obliged. The drink still wasn't that good, but, I mean, really, what do you do? read more

Stumbled upon Bar Ilegal last night while having drinks at Clive. 1. The tiny stone building where Bar Ilegal calls home is rustic and intimate, and like stepping back in time to a wild west Texas tavern. Even in January the space was comfortable, the music was just right and the people were quietly buzzing with excitement but never in a rush. 2. Our bartender Billy was knowledgable about the Mezcal and enthusiastically gave us it's history and taught us about it's secrets - he was passionate about sharing a great product with the world. We learned everything about the drink, from the gourds it was served in to the way mezcal is made in central Mexico, to the secret ingredients in the salt it was served with. This is definitely a learning experience. 3. At Bar Ilegal you must be willing to try something completely new (but very, very old) and possibly fall in love with it. Your throat may burn but your taste buds will delight in never before felt combinations of oak, earth, sweet, dry, salt and spice. Mezcal and Bar Ilegal are not for the feint of heart. read more

This place is some cool eye candy. I especially like the chandelier, which, if I'm not mistaken, was made with tequila bottles. The chairs are from the old Peacock, and the bar was as spacious a one-room-in-a-converted-house can be with a dart board tucked into one corner. The interior is a nicely rough finished wood stained dark with a two story volume in the middle. It has a rich look for a converted old house. The ramp outside made this one jump another point for being ADA compliant like it should, but regardless. The deck is very nice, and for downtown spots, spacious. It was buzzing with life at the end of this drinking night and I can see why. It's got a straight line of sight to G'raj Mahal and their cool bike skeleton thing, the seats are aplenty, and the staff is eager to serve. Incidentally, you can order from GM and have it there at the Clive. This is an added bonus since GM is open til 3am. I liked several of the beers Clive Bar had on tap which is a step up from the bottles-only thing they have going on at the Lustre down the street. Full bar besides with a couple of choices for wine as well... This is a great addition to Rainey street by the folks that brought Houston the Pearl Bar and Austin the Lustre Pearl of whom I am still a huge fan. Again, if you're looking for something a little more tame than their sister bar, you are not likely to be disappointed with this stop on your next drink outing that is off the 6th/4th/east district tour. read more

So.... Clive took a step down for me. Was there last week on a quiet night and the ambience and the anonymity that I so enjoy has taken a hit. The night we were there, we were overwhelmed by the overeager "bouncers/barbacks" These are the kind of guys you would expect at a 6th street college bar but highly unecessary at laid back Clive. A nice enough bar, with a cozy atmosphere and swanky white leather chairs. However, pretty much all the usable space is outside, and it's winter. I'm a Texan. I think 65dg is freezing cold. I also think that winter was invented by Evil Santa (tm) and implemented by the Ice Elves of Hell. Therefore, the likelihood of me being OUTSIDE is, well, unpossible. So expect a more thorough review when I'm outside in the sane temperatures - namely, 80dg and higher. read more

Clive Bar is set up in the heart of the cool neighborhood bar/restaurant park behind Red River and Cesar Chavez. We will call it the Rainey district. The atmosphere is really dark, but I guess it kind of adds to that edgy feel you get in the area. Certainly a hip place to be. There is ample seating here, and the furniture is pretty awesome. They decorated this hipster bar pretty nicely. The 3 leaving seating is pretty sweet, but the indoor gets packed. Fast. They pour some good drinks, but I thought that prices were a touch steeper than most dive bars. But I guess you pay for a good vibe here, and that is certainly an important thing with your booze. Also, no parking... and it is not like you would drive into this area anyway. Looks like its a cab-kinda spot. read more

Stopped by Clive Bar for a beer last night. They have a nice selection on tap, including local (512) and Real Ale brews. The staff has a great attitude -- they seem happy to be there and so you do too. Not to mention the beautiful and aromatic fresh wood everywhere. Floor, walls, bar, ceiling. Both lovely and handsome. To complement the dark romance of the wood, small candles flicker alongside the parameter of the bar and deck, creating a quiet yet inviting ambience. The deck is quite large with very little sitting area. Don't know if chairs/tables are to come or if they envision a standing-only social scene. They had the juke box inside rocking with old country tunes and hillbilly hits. With ability to be both intimate (inside) and good for groups (outdoor), this neighborhood gem will be crowed in no time. Have a feeling the staff can handle it. read more

In my life I have recurring dreams about strange new places that are perfect as could be- a new room in my house or a new bar or restaurant that feels Goldilocks-just-right. And you know that weird feeling of activation you get in the back of your brain when you see someone or someplace or something you dreamed about? That's how I felt when I walked up to this place. I'm not saying I dreamed it into being, but I immediately felt a strong resonance. It's got a kind of dreamlike, ethereal - as some have put aptly below, mysterious- aura, which was especially strong on the rainy night we went there. The all-around wood makes it smell divine. It is the ideal combination of the casual al fresco bar/dining spot that is so typical of Austin (and so awesome- think Shady Grove [kinda, minus the Tex Mex) and a more refined, elegant place. I had to delete the word 'upscale' because that usually just means pretentious around here (think Belmont - sorry): Austin places that consider themselves upscale typically have the money to back up the term, but not the class. This isn't the case with Clive Bar. Anyway, 'cosmopolitan' may be a better word to describe it. But before you order, you may want to ask what things cost. They may or may not have a list; I didn't see any. I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc expecting to pay the going rate of around $7-$8, not thinking to ask. Maybe a mistake - it was $10 a glass. But it was very good. (by the way, you don't have to get pricey drinks if you don't want to. They also have cheap beer, like $2 Pearl). On a final note, the bartender was excellent. One of the best bars I experienced on Rainey street from start to finish. Security guards were nice and the experience only got better walking in. While more crowded then a lot of the bars I went to I soon realized why. Peppered in the crowd were both locals and tourist living in sweet drunken harmony. I wish I remembered her name but my bartender was the sweetest lady that was very attentive and did everything with a smile. Behind the bar is this shack speakeasy Called Illegal Bar serving up Mezcal flavored drinks that I was lucky to go to as it is open only on Saturday and Sunday's. read more

I visited Clive Bar on Saturday around 2 pm with a party of 7 women. It was cold outside (to a Texan) and there was hardly any seating inside. And what seating there was mostly consisted of 2-person tables. We ended up sitting outside, in the sun, and it was ok. An employee turned a heat lamp on for us and that helped a little. I had a Hemingway Daquiri that was tasty. My friends had beers, mimosas, and other cocktails and seemed to enjoy them. The decor inside this bar was very nice, kind of manly and modern. The bartender was friendly enough. I have no idea what this place is like at night, but during in the day it was nice. read more

Let me just preface this by saying I came here for an sxsw event. I will say that because it was sxsw, parking was a nightmare (as expected). We parked on the other side of the interstate and walked over because there weren't any spots anywhere. After the parking situation was settled, we found this bar nestled on the corner of a residential area. Yep, a bar just sitting in the middle of a neighborhood... no big deal. I like this location because you're not surrounded by the drunkfest that is 6th street. I had a great time when I went. The bar was rented out by Tumblr for a few hours and they had free beer and based on this fact alone, I would have given this place 5 stars, but I know free beer is not what happens on the reg here. The weather was perfect and this place had tons of outdoor seating. They had a deck on the side of the bar and a patio beneath that. It was a good place to just kick back, relax, and have fun with your friends. I really liked the crowd too (again, I can't speak to the regular crowd that comes because this place was full of Tumblr people) but everyone just seemed like they had it together, knew how to drink, and nobody would be barfing anywhere near me or at all. I'm not sure if I would go back again just because I don't really know what Clive Bar's vibe is really like but I will say that I had a great time and that this was the perfect venue to host something like this. read more

I liked Clive Bar a lot. They were busy on the Friday night that I visited, but there was ample seating outside and although there was no seating available at the bar, it was still very easy to fit in between patrons to order a drink. Inside they had the A/C cranked up even though the doors were open. Some may see that as wasteful, but the cold air felt great after spending a lot of time in the hot, muggy night. There was a great crowd the night I was there, with a nearly equal guy-to-girl ratio. The Clive Bar is clean and the prices are reasonable. read more

I checked out this bar yesterday. It is awesome. There's an inside and a nice outside patio. As to the outside using a lot of wood, it looks like possibly the patio is built on an incline and as such needed to be built to an even surface -- look at the long and nice wheelchair ramp for people that need it. 2 comments: 1. they have bulleit bourbon which i like. i have seen very few other bars carry this. +1 2. the decor is nice, but WTF is up with the cheap plastic handled 5 dollar faucet in the men's bathroom. decoration FAIL. read more

The wood brings a lot of warmth to this tiny space. The patio is pretty spacious and the crowd does overflow a bit on busy nights. The chairs and tables make me remember some good times at the former Peacock lounge on the east side. This place is not quite as hipster though. It's somewhere between hipster and yuppie. All in all i like it. The mastermind of Lustre Pearl did a great job on this neighborhood gem. The beer selection is a step up here and the bartenders are friendly and fast. This is a nice location to just spend the whole evening drinking and chatting or playing darts. Dancing doesn't really take on well with the tight space, but I'm sure you could manage to bust a few moves. I'm pretty sure girls outnumbered guys which was nice...in my opinion. The latest addition to Rainy Street (the neighbors have got to be so unhappy with how this place is developing, but this is good for those of us who don't live down there), about a block away from Lustre Pearl. Super cozy inside with a ton of nice dark wood, but only 4 or 5 tables and a really tiny bar that can be difficult to get up to for the every important cocktail order. All in, I'd bet they have less than 30 seats inside, which makes for some serious standing on nights too chilly to be outside. Looks like they managed to finagle the old chairs and stools from the Peacock Bar (R.I.P.) Inside has a dart area as well, which seems a bit wasteful given the extremely limited space in here. TV behind bar seems out of place here. The outside patio is another story completely. They must have emptied out the deck building section of at least three Home Depots to build this corral. Where Lustre Pearl shines with the incredible back yard patio style outdoor seating area, Clive fails with their efforts to use up all the 2x6's in Texas while removing any character or charm that might have otherwise been. Reasonably priced drinks and fine if you feel like standing up all night, but to me Clive has a much more cozy chill feel -- probably best on a weekend night when you can snag one of the tables and relax with friends. read more
