Having access to hiking and mountain biking so close to the major urban center of San Diego is a…read morehuge benefit to everybody who lives here that enjoys the outdoors. Right now through March is the best time of year to visit in my opinion. Everything is beautiful and green and the flowers are starting to come out. I just hiked there this past weekend and it was spectacular. Over the course of the years when we have had super blooms, the mountainside on South Fortuna gets covered with poppies. We only saw a couple puppies here this past weekend but super exciting! With a little bit of rain in the near future forecast, the wildflowers are going to explode. So many different choices of trails to hike, but the south Fortuna Mountain is definitely my favorite. There's a kick ass section of over 200 stairs that goes straight up the hillside. That's the hillside where the poppies come out and it's one hell of a workout. It does get incredibly hot out here in the summer months. I would proceed with caution, if choosing outdoor activities here at those times. Tons of water, early morning or late evening start time for activities and adequate sun protection are a must. There is very little shade on these trails. I would also recommend always going with a buddy, just in case there's an emergency, and using the AllTrails app so you don't get lost.

I've been wanting to go to Mission Trails for the longest and finally had the opportunity to go…read morerecently. It was a typical beautiful day...I thought why not enjoy it at Mission Trails Regional Park. It was easy to get to and plenty of available parking...choice of lot or street. That's greaaat parking is not an issue whatsoever! Our goal was to see the dam. We had a pleasant walk...basking in the sun...listening to nature...reading park info displayed and signage. Along the way, we realize there were pipeline work being done for what appears to be for waste. We weren't sure for how long this work was going on. When we almost arrived at our destination, we were disappointed to find out the road to the dam was closed due to construction. I wish this sign was at the start of the trail. We could've taken another trail instead. It's all good though. We enjoyed looking at the open areas with rugged hills and valleys while taking in the nature surrounding us. Overall, it was a good outdoor experience. We'll be back :-)

The South Fortuna Mountain and Fortuna Saddle Loop is a solid, rewarding hike with a great mix of…read moreclimbs, views, and a little challenge. I did this loop on a hot day, so definitely plan for early morning or cooler weather--the heat can be intense with very little shade throughout the trail. I started the loop by going left at the trailhead, which means you descend the infamous stairs instead of climbing them. That definitely made it easier on the lungs, but the steep, rocky descent was a bit rough on the knees. Trekking poles would be helpful here if you have sensitive joints. The trail is well-marked, with steady elevation gains, wide open views, and a mix of single-track and wider fire roads. While it's not a heavily trafficked trail--I didn't see too many people--you still feel safe and connected enough in case you need help. There is parking at the trailhead, and it wasn't crowded when I arrived. The loop makes for a great workout and offers beautiful panoramic views from the top, making the effort well worth it.

This is a popular trail, with many people hiking and their pets. There are areas of exposure and some are shaded. Different types of terrain also to test your technical skills. Absolutely love the "ups" and this one delivers some fun ones. Parking is street and easy at the trailhead. Bring lots of water and some food to enjoy at the peak. Please come so you can create your own experience.

AZTEC RECREATION CENTER @ SDSU…read more This gym is available for all San Diego State University students and those who are interested in purchasing the membership. I definitely have enjoyed coming to this gym for the past 3 years as a student. I really like how big the gym is, it has two floors, and they also have areas where you can lift and also join to do classes. The one thing I dislike and lost a star was that it can get VERY overpacked, and that they don't have enough machines for this. There is way too much people waiting on the one machine they have, valley enough treadmills for the amount of students that attend this school. They always run out of paper towels especially when it gets done to the evening crowd. I'd definitely recommend attending an evening time for the gym

The facility upgrades are fantastic, but it's sad that the facilities are no long open 24 hours! I assume it's to allow staff to deep clean the place? There are two main gripes I have about the ARC: 1. The students need to learn how to rerack their dang weights. 2. On weekend nights sometimes the walkways are cluttered with hot dog stands -- including in the bike path near the arena and the ramp to the gym. I don't remember that being an issue pre-COVID. I bike to the ARC to avoid parking, but having to navigate my bike around hot dog carts in a thoroughfare is annoying.
