Ah-mazing customer service. Aaron and Kevin were absolute angels when it came to assisting me with my shiny new Brompton & it's rack needs. Even close to closing and a storm on it's way they wanted to make sure that I was able to leave the shop with my bike ready to go. I've even had instances where my motor was having issues on the roadside, and called in and they were able to help me troubleshoot it. The customer service I've received every time I've come in has been superb and they are so extremely honest about the products they carry in store. They only offer the best. One of the gals, I can't quite remember her name at this moment, but she helped me buy my Brompton originally she gifted me these amazing wheels I've been pumped to try that give you bidirectional motion. She said she didn't use them anymore and was happy to gift them when they were on display. My experience here has always been a 10/10! read more

I saw this bike in Amsterdam last summer and fell in love with it. I ordered it with Dean and it showed up the same day as my 60th BD . I love the color combination, the weight and the ride is super fun. The initial set up for the bike and and registration also performed smoothly before the delivery. Excellent customer service! Found this place scouring the internet for an item sold out and on backorder absolutely everywhere. They answered all my questions on the phone every time I called. Instead of waiting 2 months for the backordered item, I received it in less than one week!! And no, I didn't pay for expedited shipping. Shipping was totally reasonable, especially considering it was a large item going across the country. Looking at their website they seem to have premium products. I recently bought an electric Bluejay bike from Clever Cycles and everything about the experience had been great. I was replacing a bike that did not have a local service option (van moof) so a friendly and convenient shop was a priority for me. I also wanted my bike to be cute-- it's my ride!! I test rode a lot of different bikes on the floor, and ended up getting a different model than I expected. In the first month I've ridden about 200 miles on it and it's super fun and efficient. I took it into Clever Cycles for its tune up and the staff answered all my questions and were really nice, which isn't always the case. I think local shops like Clever Cycles can help get more folks out riding bikes and feeling comfortable-- thanks for the good work! Only thing I would change would be adding evening hours one or two days a week to make it easier for commuters to get bikes serviced. read more

I'm not in the Portland, OR area, I am in the SF Bay Area, and since our SIP enforcement continues to be extended, I thought that this would be a great time to pick up a new hobby. The hobby that I picked was biking (along with everyone else in the US) and of course I pick out a bike that is sold out everywhere, which is classic behavior for me. I was searching high and low for a Linus Mixte 3 and I FINALLY found it at Clever Cycles. I called the shop a few times to understand my options for shipping the bike from Oregon to California. Each employee that I spoke with were incredibly helpful and friendly -- shout out Eva & Dylan!! When I was able to confirm that they had the bike & that I could purchase it, I was helped by a super friendly guy named Dean. Dean answered each of my questions, and I assure you there were a lot. Fantastic experience! We had limited time on our road trip through Portland, OR and with lots of bike shops to choose from I think we found the best one! I guess if this is how you roll and this is what you need, then this is where you get it. I've been in a few times looking for this or that, and found them not very friendly or particularly helpful. Last time I was in I spoke with (I assume) the owner, who was clearly in a Very Bad Mood and more concerned with the minutiae of her business then customers. Although I have (yet) to buy a bike from CC, I felt the need to review it. The female owner answered my questions on the phone ("yes, I need a 15" bike-I am only 5 feet tall.") After answering my questions on the phone, I went in person a few days later to check their stock out in person. (Two stores in Portland have bikes in my size for less than 1k /end rant!!!) The same lady helped me and was super nice and understanding about my situation- total bike newbie. She answered every question I had in a nice, simple and no condescending manner. I rode the cutest Dutch bike I have seen and it is on sale! She let me inspect and ride wobbly around the corner for a while. even though there was no rental available in my size she allowed me to take an "extended test ride" where a friend and I rode around the neighborhood for 30 mins. Unsure after over an hour of chatter and questions, the owner told me to sleep on it with no pressure. She was nice and funny and I am still considering the Dutch Gazelle bike. read more

Accidentally I disconnected an expensive -- $150! -- ebike front light ripping the wiring from inside the light. Took it to a local bike shop for advise on "repairability". They recommended Clever Cycles as a shop familiar with bike lights. Got in touch with them and described problem requiring re-soldering wiring to light motherboard. They said they'd have a go at the fix. Within a day, they repaired the light for a reasonable price and then, at my request, reconnected light the the Bosch ebike system. I decided to take the leap and get an ebike. I researched a lot online and went to several bikeshops to test ride various brands but my head was still swimming with information overload. And frankly, I was really disappointed most ebikes are so ugly. I went to clever on a sunny saturday and it was a madhouse. Still, an employee quickly came to help me but it was too overwhelming for me so I returned on a weekday around lunchtime. Most of the employees were unloading a delivery truck and two were in the middle of working on bikes. One of them cheerfully set that task aside and patiently answered all my questions and helped me test ride 3 bikes. I was there for quite awhile. I went home. I called the next day with more questions and another employee was super helpful over the phone. Finally I purchased the bike. When I went to pick it up a third employee spent time with me as I practiced how to properly lock it up. I've always ridden second hand beater bikes so this was a huge investment for me and I really appreciated that everyone I encountered in the shop was respectful of that. They didn't rush me even though they had customers spending more on other bikes. I am now the happy owner of a Linus Ember. It rides like a dream and is pretty cute. This happened in 2018, but I was reminded of it today, when I came across the receipt and it made me angry all over. In July 2018, I brought my Bike Friday folding touring bicycle into the shop and pointed to the wheels and told the sales clerk that I needed tubes for the bike. I figured Clever Cycle would be the best place to get these tubes since they specialize in folding bicycles. I told him I was going on a touring trip to the Netherlands and I wanted some spare tubes. He sold me several. Great! or so I thought. Flash forward to my trip when I get a bad flat and the tubes don't fit. I tried to patch the existing tube but it was too badly ripped. I ended up having to abort a leg of my trip in order to take a train to Maastricht to get the correct replacement tubes. I could understand the clerk's mistake if I had not brought in my bike, but I had made the extra effort to bring in the bike to avoid any mistakes. read more

After emailing with the shop, drove from Seattle to Portland to buy a bike, had $3500 in my pocket ready to go. Was greeted with a closed show room (due to Covid) and a suspicious store owner (Eva) asking if I had an appointment... even though they'd said to come by anytime between 11-5pm. I had to show her the email, and she locked the door and left me standing on the street to confirm my story. The exchange degenerated from there.... I felt that she was much more interested in enforcing her rules than letting me purchase a very expensive bicycle. There was no way she was going to let me in (mask and all) to her store to perhaps look at what models they had available... basically she wanted me to take the bike she shoved out onto the sidewalk and slide the cash under the door. I'm all for Covid safety, but they should have let me know before I made the trip. All in all it was an irritating experience. I'll spend my money elsewhere. read more

Now, children it is story time. Once upon a time, I set out on my bicycle to journey to meet up with Joshua C. at a YPOP event in the distant land of the Southeast. (To hear more about that see my review of Blitz Ladd). About to mount my trusty cycling steed, I realized that no beam shone forth from my front headlight. Oh, woe! Oh, woe! But no time to mourn, it is 5pm and jobless Joshua C. will soon be all alone, adrift in a sea of gloating and happily employed Portland yuppies. Heavy with my loss, I pedaled to the local bike store, which will remain UNNAMED due to my strong belief in not wreaking VENGENCE on those I have not thoroughly tested. Ten minutes pass, as I, the lone customer, stare, eyes glazing at my luminating options, while three staffers chatter in a bike-hipster manner. Finally, "Miss," (MISS!?!!! What century is this?) "do you need some help?" Thanks for offering, but no thanks for your entirely unhelpful help. I choose the cheapest one out of frustration. Out of the shop, the battery compartment won't open, and I have no screwdriver to attach the mount, so back again to the unhelpful store. "Miss?" (ARGH!) "What brings you back here?" "Well, I can't open the battery compartment, and I was wondering if could borrow a screwdriver to attach the mount." "Genericmalename," says unhelpful employee to another, "Put the batteries in the light and take care of everything else." It's actually a kindly fellow-customer who shows me how open the light myself. Give a girl a fish, and she will keep coming back to your store with annoying questions. Teach a girl to fish, and she will get her own fish and leave you alone. It's in your own self-interest to not treat me as incompetent. Anyway, why dwell on the blemishes of the past? Again I am off. The phone rings, it is Joshua C. I tell him my woes, and that I will arrive soon. Fast forward, now over the Morrison Bridge, to 9th Avenue on the South East side. I'm running late, as I reach back into my pack to pull out the address. My back light is attached to the lip of my bag, and as I fumble, I accidentally flick the light, which flies to the ground, shattering, shrapnels of bike light things raining down on the pavement. Oh woe! OH WOE! But what was that little cycling shop on the last corner I saw? Clever Cycles! Quickly, I rush to the door. They close at 6; it's 6:05pm. Woe! But, Joy! The door opens. Oh, such joy! Folding bikes, bakfiets! Cool leather seats! And other super-cool things that I am not bike-hip enough to know about! Massive points for excellent store design and inventory. No one's at the desk, but them a salesMAN materializes. I emphasize MAN, as again I was helped by two men, both of who must know infinitely more about bikes than I, but I was treated with respect and kindness. It's after closing? No, not a problem for us to sell you a light. And, I will offer to attach it to your bike for you, and spend time analyzing the best place for you to put your light. And, no, not once was I called "Miss." If you want to call me anything, call me Ma'am. It's what they call ranking female officers in the military, and, for all you know, I could be one. And I'll make sure that Clever Cycles gets all the military cycling contracts. read more

Rude & Lying Over-The-Phone Service. I called Clever Cycles today to inquire about purchasing an Xtracycle Free Radical for my bike. I had heard great things about them and hoped to make them my new bike shop. When I inquired as to why their Free Radical sets are $50 more than other shops, first the Employee lied, saying it was the standard Xtracycle price. When I said that Xtracycle charges only $399, she countered that they were only a web shop whereas Clever Cycles runs an actual store. I tried to explain that Citybikes Annex sells them for $399, but she cut me off with a mean-spirited 'yeah, well good luck getting one' and hung up on me. I guess I'll never be patronizing Clever Cycles. While I'm fine with paying extra for a real store with helpful employees, and I understand that not everyone can wheel-and-deal, I feel I was treated rudely, and the only reason to pay extra for items in person is for customer service, which their employee was sorely lacking. read more

I went in to Clever Cycles primarily because they have a large stock of Brooks saddles. I'm not sure any other shop in Portland does. The nice lady with a Euro accent was so helpful to my ignorant ass trying to pick from one of twenty on the wall. She even held up a bike that had the B68 for me to try to decide whether or not it was too wide while I was flailingly attempting to determine my pedal reach. Their selection of racks, saddles, fenders, and other commuter style accessories is the largest I have come across in Portland and the staff is incredibly helpful. I am a new commuter on my bike, not some fixie weirdo or a racer. This shop has the kind of things I drool over for my new ride. read more

I made my first trip to Clever Cycles yesterday to learn more about better saddle options for my fairly well customized 15 year old mountain bike grocery getter commuter tourer trail rider whatever. I was pleased first to not be looked down upon for having an old Trek 830 as my favorite bike, and yes, that has happened at some shops I have visited. The person out front (forgot to get her name) was very helpful in explaining the different saddle options and explaining a bit about Brooks saddles. The other person in the back shop (didn't get her name, either) very efficiently installed the saddle and adjusted it's height and angle. I left with a lovely B135 fully sprung Rube Goldberg looking saddle, perfect for the "oh it's pavement, now it's gravel, now it's a dirt path, now its a grassy field" kind of biking I regularly encounter. A test ride confirmed that this was a good choice. I saw a well-organized, well-stocked, welcoming shop, with a good selection of accessories and I will be back. Thank you! If you think of bicycles as practical modes of travel, if you are just as likely to wear your work clothes while pedaling as lycra gear, then this is a good place for you. read more

When I moved to Portland, I visited 14 bike shops (!) in three days before finally buying a nice hipstery-looking bike from Clever Cycles. A year later, when that bike was stolen out of my backyard (LOCK YOUR BIKES EVERYWHERE, PEOPLE), I went back to Clever Cycles and bought another bike from them. It was a no-brainer. They're friendly, they have a great selection, and their repair/maintenance team is top notch (shoutout to Adriel, great guy). When my bike was miraculously returned to me a week later (REGISTER YOUR BIKES, PEOPLE), I brought the new bike back, and Clever Cycles returned it, no questions asked. I cannot recommend Clever Cycles highly enough. read more

I visited Clever Cycles for sales help and mechanic support. The sales staff is friendly and accommodating. I was shopping for a new bicycle for my fiancé and we were helped by two women who understand the needs of a female cyclist, especially when most bikes aren't designed for women. Overall on the shopping side, fantastic and helpful. On the mechanic side, the service was helpful but not as friendly. I explained that I had been troubleshooting a flat tire issue for some time and without much conversation I was told, "it's something in the tire," without any plans for resolution. I prodded further and the mechanic inspected my tire, finding that it was indeed something in the tire (not debris, but the tire itself had worn out and the cable was tearing my tubes.) Though his prognosis was correct, there wasn't effective communication on next steps. They were efficient at solving the problem, but overall I didn't feel comfortable during my interaction with the mechanic. read more

I've patronized dozens of bike stores all across the country, and Clever Cycles is by far my favorite. From day one, when I walked in and wanted to know if they could Xtracyclify my crappy old mountain bike, they learned my name and remembered it. Now, two months later, I'm greeted with a wave, a, 'Hi Sue!' and sometimes even a hug. That's my kind of shop! In addition to being wonderfully warm, Clever Cycles has stellar products, very knowledgeable staff (most of whom are actually owners), and top notch wrenches. These people are not only experts, they are pioneers in the 'Functional Cycling' (a term I just coined) field. And have you read their blog? It's mostly (all?) written by Todd, one of the owners. That blog is where I learned about the superiority of wool shirts. I now own two, and I hate to wear anything else. Even in blazing 97 degree heat, my wool shirt keeps me cool when I ride; it's amazing! OK, I could go on and on but I'll leave you with one parting fact: I bought my Xtracycle from them, and loved them enough to refer all my friends and family to them, and now I'm about to get another bike from them, too. Awesome Experience! I wanted to get a Brompton Bike for my birthday and this was the only online store that actually had the Bike with all the stock features and gear options that I wanted. I had a small issue initially placing my order online but after phoning in and speaking with a very friendly and informed Staff member Jeremy who took my order over the phone and had my bike in the mail by the end of the day. It's awesome coming to a bike store and being treated like an intelligent human being, by another intelligent human being. I came here expecting to buy a $200 bag for my Brompton while on vacation from Seattle. Todd, the salesman, has made me into a permanent Clever Cycles fan. Rather than letting me buy the $200 bag, he helped me understand that for my needs, I'd be just as well off with a $40 cover and would be making a bad decision to spend the extra bucks. He was ready to let me purchase the $40 cover and call it a day, but I had to admit I was piqued by his obviously considerable Brompton knowledge, and started asking him about the kinds of modifications he did to his own Brompton. And I ended up walking out with another $160 worth of gear and an autographed copy of Mia Birk's book. While Todd joked that he was a terrible salesman in convincing me to buy something 1/5th the price of what I'd planned, the fact is that I spent a bit more than I'd originally planned...just on the right stuff. (As an aside, visiting this store was the first time in the US where I didn't have to translate what the salesperson was saying into my cycling needs, as a car-free person who actually isn't just tossing my bike onto an SUV for recreation.) read more

First off, the store is beautiful. I wouldn't care if it weren't, but it really is stunning. A man helped me find a lock and a helmet and was very knowledgeable about product details. He walked outside to look at my bike and decide what lock would fit with it. However, and this is kind of silly, but I do wish he would have simply pointed out a mirror somewhere for me to check out the helmet I was trying on, to see that I looked absolutely ridiculous. Granted, helmets are not meant to be attractive, they're meant to save your life. But seriously, It's a bit of out control huge. I even cracked a joke about not even looking in the mirror before I bought it, but he seemed to just want to sell it. So that's where a star was lost. But, I returned this week to actually return the lock I bought. I found a lighter weight one somewhere else that is still secure for me and more in my budget. I felt awful, but the guy there today didn't make me feel bad AT ALL. He even commended me on returning "the best looking packaged" return he'd ever seen. so sweet. I'll definitely go back, especially because they are a "Supportland" business. Really great service, and an amusing woman works there too who rung me up. read more

Each day we wenr in we were told " we are short staffed." I know about short staffing ! I just still get the job done, and do not bother my clients w the details. For my birthday, my husband surprised me with a trip to Clever Cycles. I've been eying a Brompton bike for a few years now and never had the opportunity to test drive one. As soon as we stepped into Clever Cycles I was drawn straight over to their Brompton display. The color I've been wanting in the bike configuration I've been wanting was sitting right there, it was too good to be true. Eva was the sales person who helped me. She was very informative and quite helpful. I test drove the bike around the neighborhood (she told me the best route to follow) and by the time I got back, I didn't want to leave the store without it. That is where the surprise comes in, my husband told me happy birthday it was mine. (: Eva taught me how to change the rear tire in case of a puncture (a little trickier than normal) and I also ended up getting a few add ons (Brooks saddle, Touring Bag) Being that we're from over 3 hours away, I have to say I'm a little nervous about their 30day free bike check-over. Eva assured me that it shouldn't be a problem, and to call ahead. So far, the bike has been exceptional! The few issues I had (left the store without the owners manual, any pkging or documentation...doh) were addressed right away via email. We have plans to return this weekend to order my husband a Brompton. I will update soon. read more

During the most recent visit (i thought i would give it another try) I was helped(?!) by a very rude woman (maybe the owner). I knew what i wanted and she made it clear that it wasn't for me and when i asked to try it she said "no way Jose!". Very rude and just plain weird. If you've ever wanted to try out a Brompton folding bike, this is the place to do it. Just don't go through the front; go through the back entrance on 9th. The people working the front are kind of cold, while the service folks in the back - whom we dealt with mainly - were awesome and kind. We were staying in the Southeast side; we chose it for the proximity of bike rentals and food carts. Be sure to call ahead to reserve bikes; we slept on it and were unable to rent during the weekend, though we were able to bike three out of five days. Prices are extremely reasonable; a 24 hour rental is $35 and a four hour is $20. They do close early, round 6 on most days, so make the most of your rentals! The shop people were decent folks. Made sure we knew how to correctly fold and unfold our Bromptons, and gave us tips on how not to look like dweebs doing it. Their advice was greatly appreciated. I occasionally looked dweebish, but that's more about my slow motor skills. read more
