When I was sitting in Sam's barber chair with my eyes closed I already knew that he would not just go a great job, he would do the perfect job on my overgrown beard. There's no way I would ever come to clever barber unless traffic court gets postponed and I get stuck on Atlantic ave right before rush hour traffic with a spot just for me right in front of the place. In suit and tie, my beard was a complete mess and, as I mentioned, the "universe" was insisting I get cleaned up. Sam was available and he did an awesome job super quick. Got rid of all the excess with a trimmer, then moved on the the straight edge, then some detail with the scissors, and finishing touches with a small buzzer. Absolute pro. Brought my son for a haircut. Asked if they take walk-ins, which they did. I explained what we wanted. I think it's a basic boy haircut. The barber said I wouldn't be a problem. At the end of the haircut he slapped bunch of cheap jelly to style my 7 year old sons hair without even asking. When we came home and washed his head we realized why he needed it. The taper on the sides and back had steps in it. The transition between top and back was choppy. The front was the worst. He just cut it straight. My kid looked like an orphan runaway from a movie about WW2. The whole time barber kept talking him self up, how he did this for 20 years and he is the best. Well that was so he can hit me with a $38 charge for a traumatizing kids haircut. Not wanting to offend the guy I still tipped, but I regretted it when we got home. Don't be fooled by the hip location. It's not worth it. I live around the corner and didnt want to go to park slope. At the end I had to go to my usual barber a week later to fix the disaster this guy created. read more

kind of a bummer. didn't get the cut I wanted in any way, especially considering it was a pretty simple fade I'm accustomed to getting at places like Great Clips/Sports Clips. felt uncomfortable after asking for a couple of adjustments. very hard to communicate what I wanted and met with frustration at every request. terribly uneven and a mess. had to go somewhere else 2 days later to pay for an entirely new cut. can't recommend. read more

I happen to use the yelp check in deal for 20% off and randomly wanted to check out a barbershop in Brooklyn. After seeing the reviews, decided to give this place a try as they were able to allow walk ins. The shop was packed and almost every chair was filled but the barbers were working very diligently and had some light barbershop talk. I got seated within 5 minutes of arriving and gave my barber my typical cut (short comb over with a zero fade) and he went straight to cutting without asking any additional questions. At first I was concerned on how quiet my barber was but he definitely seemed focused and patient with completing a zero fade on my sides. It was nice that the barber took his time as well and from start to finish spent about 45 minutes to get my cut down. The top of my hair was trimmed pretty short but I could tell it would grow out fine. I wish I remembered the barbers name, but I could tell the shop is very reliable and has many regulars. This is the Goldilocks of barbershops. Just right. I've been to a thousand* cheap shops that are pretty decent with the clippers, but not as good if you're looking for something other than a fade. You know, the places that are everywhere that cost somewhere between $12-$17, that would be a SuperCuts if we weren't in Brooklyn? Some are better than others, but you might not want to hit them up if you're about to get married? Those spots. I've been to a few of the high end barbers (even a couple salons), where a haircut is going to cost you $40+. They usually know what they're doing, and you'll walk out of there looking pretty good...but embarrassed that you dropped $60 (including tip) on your hair because you're a dude, and it's just hair that grows back. My most recent experience with one of these shops was great, but over the past couple years the cuts increased in price from $35 to $50, which is the difference between manageable and embarrassing/unnecessary. Clever Barber lives in the middle of this spectrum of barbershops. A cut is $31 + tip. Still more than I'd ideally like to pay, but after a few visits, I've found it's worth it. George is my dude, and he listens to what you want, and takes his time. He clearly knows what he's doing, and he cares that you're going to like the way you look, not unlike Burlington Coat Factory. Bonus points because they take online appointment reservations (even if they aren't always necessary), and because George is the only barber I've ever had who was even somewhat successful at getting all the hair off of me before I walked out. Good haircuts but long waits and bad service. Every time I've come here I've had to wait an extra 30 min from the appointment to actually start my haircut. Whatever, they are busy, I get it. This last time I booked a late appointment, and when I went the two barbers that were in the store not only had me wait 40 minutes, but when one of them freed up he passed me on to the other barber so he could go home. It was clear they had no intention of giving me a haircut. Honestly it would have been fine if they had just told me that it was too late when I got there, but having me wait 30 min, wasting my evening, and then talking shit in Spanish(I don't look like a person who can speak Spanish) is terrible service. read more

When I first moved to Brooklyn, I was on the hunt for a good barbershop. Somebody I could trust day in and day out to always have my back. Somebody that would never let me down whether it's in preparation for date night or for work. A year later, I can confidently say that George is that guy for me. I mean, this guy will always have my back 100%, and hook me up with a nice cut. So first off, Clever Barber is a no frills barbershop. But George always has some good music playing to lift up your weary spirits. What more do you need? You came to get a haircut, not get wined and dined right? He does exactly what you ask, and once he gets a bit more comfortable with your style, he might even suggest what works better for you. Today I picked up one of the hair products he sells as well, the Layrite cement clay. I was always wondering what he put in my hair at the end of my appointments to make it looks so fresh, and now I know! I've been coming here for two years now. I see George every two weeks for a crew cut and a periodic beard trim and shave. He gives me exactly what I ask for every time but at this point he just knows exactly what I want and asks "The usual?" and I jut say "yup!" Unless I want something different-in which case he still gives me the cut I ask for. Both his beard trim and cuts are solid. I also see Edgar for cuts and beard trims if George isn't available. One thing I enjoy about Clever Barber is the online booking so I simply show up and get seen. At the worst I wait a few minutes while George or Edgar finish with their client. I see a lot of people walk-in and typically they wait no longer than being the next person up. As a bonus the shaves are refreshing, the hot towel on the head after the cut or shave is soothing. I've always left feeling and looking great and I've never seen anyone walk out unsatisfied. It's also affordable- not one of those $60 haircuts at some trendy place where some bro or basic pin up does your hair. I get a haircut weekly in Manhattan, this week I was around this area and decided to step in for the 25% discount, BIG mistake! I showed a reference to the guy, he skimmed it over and got started, he literally drew a line around my head with the machine and then proceeded to trim down which is a clear sign of a terrible barber. After the cut was done let's just say my hair was ruined. Worst haircut of my life. It looked like I had a bowl placed in my head, the back was so high it looked ridiculous. I live in Baltimore and was in Brooklyn with my wife visiting some friends. I've been growing my hair out for about 2 1/2 months but with all the nice places to go here I figured I needed to have my hair cleaned up so I don't look like a slob. I looked on Yelp and found this place. I walked in around 5pm on a Saturday and it was pretty quiet and not busy so I was able to walk in without having an appointment. I expected as much since I know Saturday mornings are the busiest times. The woman in the front greeted me and Ali took me in his chair. Ali was great, he asked and listened to how I wanted my hair. I'm trying to grow out my hair on the top but I needed to clean up the sides and the back. Throughout the cut he asked me how I wanted my hair and always listened to my feed back. He took his time and really paid attention to the detail. The hot shave on the back of the neck was great and he did not rush it like other barbers I've visited in the past. The price of $31 was not bad considering all that they do during the cut. The cut, the style, and the hot shave. With tip I spent $40. If I lived in Brooklyn I would make this my permanent barber shop and Ali as my go to barber. Next time I visit Brooklyn I'll be sure to drop in and get another cut. read more

I don't think I can come here anymore. Two times ago I did the yelp deal and the screen said a specific discounted amount and I handed the guy a $50 bill and he gave me change on a full priced cut even though he physically discounted it himself and the screen said a different number. I chalked it up to a simple mistake. The most recent cut I went over two specific things I didn't not want and reminded the guy right before he started to cut in the area. Easily my worst haircut in years...compounded by the fact that the barber spent more time explaining at me why the Russia invasion isn't so bad and why African countries are sh*tholes and don't matter on the global scale than he did cutting my hair. As for the cut itself?  The upper portion of my dome looks like a poorly circumcised penis...when I asked the barber if they might fix it, they explained to me that it "should look like that." First and foremost I would like to preface this with: I rarely write reviews unless I feel as though I should share my experience with others. My boyfriend and I came in to get a haircut today, and I was extremely dissatisfied with the service of this staff. We showed up 10 minutes early and people seemed like they were finishing up with clients, so we were ok, and they let us know that it would be a few minutes. Our appointment time had come and gone and we were still sitting there watching two of these barbers sitting around and eating. It was 11:30 am, not even lunchtime yet. We waited for an additional 15 minutes and watched men come in after us get seated before us, even a walk-in. They did not even approach us in the 25 minutes we were there to let us know it would be a little bit. If they had let us know I would have had no problem waiting, but it seemed like they were ignoring us. We walked out and they didn't even apologize. Clearly these guys are usually great since all the cuts in their pictures are very slick, but I got a bit of a hack job. Asked to have the barber bring my bands up about two inches, he literally just cut a straight line across and didnt shape it or do a point cut at all. I asked him to shape it a little but he seemed to think it was fine. Similarly on the back of my hair he shaved a straight line with no taper. On top of that I had pretty bad razor burn when I got home. Like I said, looks like these guys can do a good job so I mustve caught this guy on a bad day or something. read more
