I had been here a few times before, but always later at night, when Center City had become a field of lights and much of the city itself had disappeared. Arriving around 5:30 before dinner at Irwin's was completely different: the texture, color, and architectural detail of Philadelphia were still visible, from the brick neighborhoods below to the older structures and towers rising toward Center City. I realized I had never fully appreciated how beautiful the city looks from up here in daylight. At that hour, the crowd may have appealed to me almost as much as the setting. It felt full of people in roughly the same stage of life as my wife and me: couples on dates, old friends catching up, and people who still love a great happy hour but probably get to enjoy one less often these days. There was a wonderful sense of people being genuinely pleased to be out on a beautiful evening, sipping a glass or two of rosé and enjoying company they had made time to see. It felt social without being frantic, grown up without being dull, and cool without trying very hard. Somehow, the whole place lands at a strange and wonderful intersection of the YMCA, a John Hughes public high school, and the relaxed design sensibility of Soho House or The Hoxton. The YMCA part is the lack of ego and organic community; the John Hughes part lives in hallways and bathrooms that could have appeared in The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller's Day off. Warm lighting, raw materials, and an attractive cross section of Philadelphia give it a cosmopolitan glow that never feels staged. On a warm summer evening, there is even a faint Wet Hot American Summer looseness to the whole operation. Walking in made that combination almost comically tangible. We passed inMovement's full gymnastics facility beneath the old "Girls Gym" sign; we had taken our 3.5-year-old daughter to a birthday party at its smaller Queen Village location, so seeing this enormous Olympic-style setup inside Bok was especially fun. A fit guy in a perfectly worn vintage Venice Beach T-shirt, and for a second the building felt suspended somewhere between 1930s South Philadelphia and 1980s Southern California. Places like this feel plausible in Los Angeles and Philadelphia, cities where large old structures can still become something strange, ambitious, and culturally alive. My wife and I grabbed Diet Cokes, found seats easily, and spent a little time outside before heading across the hall to Irwin's. The staff was friendly, and the whole experience felt like a neighborhood gathering place, despite occupying one of the city's most dramatic rooftops. There is a little bohemian capitalism in the mix: commercially alive, aesthetically sharp, and still pleasantly rough around the edges. It has the forward-looking energy of somewhere like Venice without drifting into the sterile polish that can swallow parts of Santa Monica. Food gives me another reason to return. I ate at Bok Bar on an earlier visit and remember being seriously impressed; this time, the Korean tacos looked fantastic, but I had to leave them untouched because dinner was waiting a few steps away at Irwin's. I also keep seeing the yoga, fitness classes, and other programming and would love to experience the rooftop in an entirely different way. Bok has always felt broader than a conventional bar, which is probably why all of those uses seem so natural here. Ultimately, Bok Bar reflects one of Philadelphia's best instincts: finding a new purpose for an extraordinary old building while preserving the grain of what was already there. The larger Bok complex now houses artists, makers, and businesses, while enough of the vocational school remains visible to shape the place's personality. Bok Bar captures that balance beautifully, giving a historic building a lively contemporary purpose that feels imaginative, useful, and deeply local. I left thinking that 5:30 on a gorgeous evening may be my favorite version of it yet.

Sari A. pretty much covered our experience and what you can expect in her review, I found the prices to be fair for the stop here -- about $17 pre-tip per person. That includes a $5 cover charge, but they offer you a free water bottle, soda or Snapple as part of the deal, so it almost evens out. Sphinx is a good place to go if you want to feel young and vibrant but don't want a night of drinking. In other words, it seemed like a good chunk of the clientele here would fall on the lower end of the 18-24 age bracket. While this is very much a lounge-type atmosphere, late on a Saturday some people stood up from their perches on couches/chairs and danced in place. It was kind of weird, but whatever. The hookah itself was great. We compromised with the grape flavor and it wasn't ever harsh. Sometimes when I smoke (which is rare!), I'll feel a constant need to cough thanks to asthma, but this wasn't the case here. We replaced our coals once, and the flavor lasted a good amount of time. Things got a little sticky at one point but were later resolved by the owner. You see, I wanted to catch the train at a certain time, so I got in line for the bathroom. It was a single stall and there were two people ahead of me. When it was my turn, a young girl announced that she needed to vomit, pushed ahead of me, and puked all over the stall. Um. I asked for my check and said I needed to go elsewhere to find a bathroom ahead of my train, but the owner told me to hold on and they'd thoroughly clean the stall. They did so quickly, which I appreciated. All the while, the girl thanked her friends for worrying about her....as she stared me down with her feet on the couch and went back to smoking. Seems like a normal thing to do after making a disgusting mess and inconveniencing someone. Aside from that incident -- which was out of the business's control -- it was a pretty nice place to stop for out-of-the-box Saturday night fun. Keep in mind that the music is pretty uncomfortable (re: rap with lots of curse words and weird statements), but otherwise you should check it out if you like hookah! I'd go back if I was in the area.

I even spoke with the manager a while back about renting the venue for a birthday party because the atmosphere and vibe were always good. Unfortunately, our experience this past Friday 6/26/26 was very disappointing. My husband and I took our daughter and her boyfriend there to celebrate her birthday. When we arrived, the security guard informed us that the air conditioning wasn't working, but there was still a $10 cover charge per person for the four of us. I even asked if they were still charging a cover despite having no A/C, and he said we can just go in. Once inside, we ordered one hookah since only my daughter and I planned to smoke. After waiting about 15 minutes for the hookah, security came in roughly 30 minutes later and announced they were shutting down at 11:48 p.m. because of the lack of air conditioning, even though there were still other customers inside relaxing and smoking. To make matters worse, when my husband paid the bill, we were charged $80 for the cover charges and one hookah, even though there was no air conditioning and we were forced to leave after only about 30 minutes. It was disappointing to pay full price for such a short and uncomfortable experience. I expected much better, especially as someone who has supported this establishment in the past. I will not be returning again. Do better!!
