I don't know about you, but I put survey places on the annoying phone call list, just below telemarketers and political robo-calls. However, at my house, when Cleaview calls, we ALWAYS pick up the phone. We're on their call list for potential surveys. Clearview's surveys often pay upwards of $100 for participation. Most of their surveys deal with mass media like television or radio stations. My wife has been to more of them than I have since she watches more TV than anyone else in the family. Seems every time they called me about a TV survey, I was disqualified for not watching the right shows or not watching enough TV, period. Well, finally I got a call for a $120 survey I could do regarding classic rock radio format song variety. In a 2-day, 2-1/2 hours per visit survey, I had to listen to 650 song clips each time and rate them by preference and whether they are overplayed on the radio. The survey took place at the Rosemont Sheraton Hotel in a conference room with about 100 people attending, seated at tables with electronic Scantron forms and #2 pencils in hand. It was like a high school final exam flashback for me. Demographically, I was a bit on the young side, as about 3/4 of the participants were white men in their 40s and 50s, many of them with caps, thick moustaches, and some baldness, dressed in flannel shirts or other blue-collar apparel, almost stereotypical of what you would define a "classic rock listener" to look like. The host of the survey was entertaining with his humorous remarks and kept the survey moving at a brisk pace so we did not waste time or get bored. Anyway, being away from a steady diet of classic rock for some time now, spending so much time exposed to 6-second clips of songs became an introspective, self-exploratory journey. While I didn't get any feedback on my survey, I discovered some things about my own tastes from the preferences I expressed on the survey. I discovered I like Fleetwood Mac a lot. I also have a new appreciation for Bob Seger. Songs like "Lido Shuffle" from Boz Scaggs and "Steppin' Out" from Joe Jackson got me tingly all over and got some of my highest scores. I also seem to like The Who a lot more than I thought. In the middle category of the mundane and overplayed, Led Zeppelin, Eddie Money, REO and Foreigner took their place. Finally, I tore apart the Rolling Stones, Pretenders, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, even The Boss and Jimi Hendrix, plus the dreary assortment of songs from The Police in particular. And somewhere in hell, there is a place for Dennis DeYoung to sing "Lady" 24 hours a day. I also found my musical tastes are conflicted. While I love Fleetwood Mac, I hate Stevie Nicks solo. Despite Yes being my favorite band of all time, the "usual" Yes songs radio stations normally play (we all know them and can count them on one hand) I grouped with the middle-of-the-road, overplayed songs. All I can say is that I was mercilessly honest.... and came out of it $120 richer. I now eagerly await my next call once I'm eligible to participate in their next survey. read more

Had a phone call with the Snack survey from Scott was told I needed a friend. Asked if I needed any certain demographics for the friend was told the only requirement was them being around my age. Have a female friend call told the friend has to be male. Callback and talk to him again and he says all the info is in my email. It is not. Ask again about demographics and am told only around my age and male. I'm 36 is 35 around my age? I think so. Ask to speak to a supervisor and she states the person has to be 36 or above. The guy running the snacks survey as Scott has no business on phone demographics and should be relieved of these duties immediately. Huge waste of time read more

I finally got chosen to participate in one of these! I was skeptical about signing up, but very happy with the experience. I just got home from a 2 hour study. I was told if I get there early, I would have a chance at winning $50 in a early bird raffle. Well, I won that $50! Great way at starting this study! The staff was very polite and the waiting area was large and had cookies and water for refreshments. We watched an hour pilot for a show and then talked about it for the other hour. John was holding the discussion and was very nice and easy to talk to. We were let out on time and given the cash as promised. No complaints! read more

Some focus group companies are pretty shady. This one isn't. It contracts out focus groups; basically, the client (say, a car maker) needs to get some opinions, they call up this company and this company goes through their database to see who would be good to ask about a new car model or whatever the client wants input on. Anyway, the client never gets your contact information (except in special situations and then only with your permission). You get calls or emails every once in a great while, only from Clearview, to see if you want to participate in whatever study they're doing. They ask you some boring questions on the phone. If you qualify, you get instructions on how to get your cash. Usually you just go to a contracted office (such as Chicago Focus in the Merchandise mart) and sit and talk about your opinions for an hour or so and then get your cash (always cash when you go to the office, never a check) and get out. One time they paid me $60 to stay home and watch Glenn Beck and they paid me via a mailed check that time. A friend of mine told me they wanted her to try out some makeup or something and they were going to give her free makeup but only pay her $25 for her time so she declined. It's ok to decline if you don't feel the money is worth the effort of going to their offices to give your opinion. Anyway, it's worth signing up with. Clearview research is on my " please call me list". They are an outstanding marketing survey place that hands out money for consumer opinion. A few months ago, clearview invited me to attend a focus group study of Cable TV shows and find out our opinion. I was in a wide age group ranging from men in their 20s into their 50s. We all discussed our interests in shows like Cougerville, Modern Family, and the middle. Some of us had moderate to liberal views while others had conservative views. It was a very interesting discussion and I was paid 75.00 dollars for 1 hour of my time. read more

Scam. After a 45 minute phone interview and telling me I qualified. I was called back a week later and told that the client changed the requirements and that I no longer qualified for the interview. I'm in the user experience field myself and conduct research with clients on a regular basis and in all my years of doing it I've never changed the requirements on audience a few days before an interview. So much better than your typical survey place! They are so professional and I didn't have to wait, the appointments ran on time. Cash was ready when survey was through, and I thought it was nice that they had water and coffee out on a table. Again I appreciate how professional the staff was and their extra friendliness. HORRIBLE customer service, incredibly rude staff (especially Betty) and the whole operation was completely unorganized and chaotic from start to finish. Do not waste your time with this place, unless you want to be treated like a second class citizen. I was contacted by them to come in for a research project regarding a new TV show. After qualifying for the study, they told me the day & time that I should arrive and then proceeded to tell me to, "be sure you come in at 11:45 because we'll be serving you lunch before the 2 hour focus group". Before hanging up I asked not once, but TWICE if the study would indeed end on time (2:15pm) because I had to pick my child up from school. I didn't want to waste their time or ruin the study by not completing it if I had to leave. She ASSURED me it would end on time and even most likely let out early. Everything sounded great. Well, absolutely NOTHING went as I was told it would. I left my morning job a few minutes early and arrived at Clearview exactly at 11:45 for lunch. There were already over 20 women there waiting, with more steadily flowing in over the next 30 minutes. No food in sight. After nearly a half hour of waiting, were told 2 minutes before the group was to begin, that lunch never arrived and we'd have to eat AFTER the 2 hour focus group. This was not okay for me because I had to leave immediately afterward to get my child from school, then drop my kid off at the sitter in time so I could go to my second job. I wouldn't have another chance to eat until after 8pm, so THAT is why I relied on this lunch we were promised. Normally I wouldn't care about such a thing, but they specifically told us there would be food and even ENCOURAGED us to show up in time for lunch, so that's why I didn't stop to eat before getting there. I POLITELY made my concern known to them and the woman running the study (Su) very rudely shrugged her shoulders and said, "I have nothing to do with that, I don't recruit people, you'll just have to deal with eating afterward" and walked out of the room. Her tone was very condescending and she looked down at me like I was less than human. I was humiliated and insulted in front of all the other women (who ALL wanted their food too and reiterated that to me when Su left the room). They FINALLY led us into the viewing room 10 minutes LATE! Now I was very concerned that we wouldn't be let out on time, so I asked Su (this time not so politely, yet not rude either. Just stern.), "Since we're starting late, will we still be let out on time?". She cut me off and had me REMOVED from the room because I was being, "disruptive". SERIOUSLY??? YOU start late, don't give us the lunch that was promised and then remove me for being concerned that I won't be able to leave at the time you stated??? If that wasn't bad enough, this unbelievably rude woman Betty (worse than Su I might add) escorted me to the lobby and ORDERED ME to, "Sit here for 2 hours and then we'll let you leave!". I was stunned at how I was being treated and I tried to explain to her why I was concerned about the time (which btw I shouldn't have even had to do) and she REPEATEDLY interrupted me. She didn't want to hear ANYTHING I had to say and put her hand out toward me and turned her head away (as if to say I'm not hearing you lady, I don't care what you have to say). I went on to acknowledge how confused I was by her behavior and then I made the comment, "I hope your company is on Yelp". Then and ONLY then did her entire attitude change. She SUDDENLY wanted to hear what I had to say. She SUDDENLY had interest in treating me like a human being. She asked me, "how can we make this right?" and then gave me a half-hearted, insincere apology. Writing this review does not even begin to truly describe how juvenile the staff behaved and how condescending and rude they were (to others there too I might add. Another lady left early as well). I hope Yelp keeps this review up, because maybe it will change the way they behave, so that future people recruited for studies are not treated with such disrespect. The ONE positive thing I can say is that Jessica (receptionist) was VERY apologetic to me when the other staff were out of the room. I could tell she was embarrassed by their behavior and she understood that I was being treated unfairly. So thank you Jessica for being the one person there with people-skills. read more

Very easy money to make. I came in for a survey to watch a new TV Pilot and then gave my opinions about the show, didn't take longer than 2 hours and I walked out with 85 bucks CASH! Also there was pizza before the group started and a drawing for early bird of 50 dollars. The staff was amazing and so polite. It was just GREAT! Some of you people that haven't been with them long enough haven't figured it out yet. EVERYONE gets picked for ONE of the paid surveys, pretty early on. Anywhere from 50 bucks to maybe 150 or so. THEN , you spend YEARS getting phone calls and filling out incessant "qualifier surveys" to see if you're going to be picked for the PAID SURVEY. Notice it ALWAYS says that? How can that logically be? Companies don't always pay the top dollar to have Clearview or anyone else trek down to the clearview headquarters and do in person what they can do on the phone or in an email survey (which tallies itself and does all the work automatically much faster). But they BAIT you with the "Hmmm paid survey coming up on Dec 15, at 2pm, 4pm, or 6pm depending on blah blah blah" and then quicks says "take this survey to see if you qualfiy for this one!" The sad part is, taking that "prequalifer" WAS the survey they needed to gather the data for the client! Proof: There should be NO REASON TO ASK YOU FOR YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS, YOUR DATE OF BIRTH, YOUR FULL NAME, YOUR CITY, HOW MANY IN YOU FAMILY, ETC., ETC, because Clearview already HAS THAT INFO when you joined! The CLIENT needs that in the survey now! Then all that data with your name, address, phone number, likes/dislikes, how much you weigh, how many diets you went on, what you tried, for instance, all goes into the SURVEY data that you just participated in. They GOT what they need to get PAID by the client! YOU, on the other hand, got ZERO for your time and level of participation. They occasionally have some bigname clients that actually come down and sit behind the 2-way mirror in the conference room watching a focus group with a few lucky paid people, but those are not as often as the surveys they send by EMAIL that they get paid for. That's how they stay in BUSINESS. They can't possibly survive by the money the clients pay for the in-person studies, no way! So, they pick you for maybe one survey, you get a little money, and that encourages you to stick it out forever knowing that your chance to get paid again is "just around the corner." HERE'S A TIP: IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN unless some mysterious client with an emergent need comes in with a weird profile of people they need, and only you and a few others that answer the survey in time will qualify and invite you down. Otherwise, they surveys that MANY qualify for will be doled out to all the new members to keep their hopes alive at becoming a semi-regular paid product reviewer. Did you know Clearview even has an APP out that they make it seem as if it's a social media app, but asks questions and gathers personal info in just the same way? And that they use that for their CLIENTS and get PAID for that info? And you do all the work on your phone app, giving them all kinds of personal valuable info, and they give you NOTHING from the surveys in this app? THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING IS TRUE, BECAUSE THEY MADE AN APP TO GET EVEN MORE DATA OFF MORE PEOPLE FOR THEIR CLIENTS IN THIS WAY. My TIP from experience is: Sign up, get your likely PAID survey in as quick as they offer it, then just drop them like a hot potato. If they want your TIME AND INFO, they need to pay YOU for it. If they don't and you keep participating, then you only have yourself to blame as to why they think they can keep emailing you asking you for your time and effort and personal info that they NEVER had an intention of paying you for.
