I mean I have been born & raised in California so why on earth would I be shocked by drought conditions?! Well... We just came out of a drought and it's still early in the year w/o enough rain or snowpack but DAMN I really didn't expect it to be soooooo bad! Saying that I follow the news very closely so I have heard it is Lakes Mendicino, Sonoma and Folsom are drying up fast. Along with most of our reservoirs... I cannot comment on how beautiful this lake would be when full, I can't wait to come back in a few years after this drought and see this place in its glory! I do know people are still catching fish and enjoying the beauty of nature here. We met a couple of very friendly geese and an old fisherman who lived near here and shared fishing stories as well as facts about the lake and some of the rocks I was finding... All in all it was a nice stop on our roadtrip!

Came for a hiking outing, so not for fishing nor kayaking. Though on the lake itself, there were…read moreplenty of those activities. So this place is off the beaten path. It is tucked into the hills east of the Napa Valley. The country roads to get here are narrow and windy. Though a little tough to get to, what you will get in return is lack of crowds and serenity. Did a 5 mile loop here, which started with a climb up a hill through an oak lined trail. It climbs for about 25-30 minutes, and most parts are quite shady, so quite nice. Most of the views are just of the neighboring canyon landscape. You also may run into a few cows here and there. You also may run into pockets of bugs flying in clusters. This doesn't really *bug* me, but just FYI. On the descend is where you will run into the lake. The remaining part of the hike will now be flat, out in the sun but literally lake side. The blue from the sky and lake mirror off each other. A cool breeze often bounces off the lake to ease you from all the sun bathing you will be exposed to. But if you take out your earbuds for a while and just listen to the natural sounds here, (highly recommended), it will sedate you into a meditative state. This lake is so quiet, that you can hear the voices from the people on the boats, hundreds of yards away. It's crazy. So lots of bikes on this trail as well, especially this flat, lakeside part. So keep on the right side and be mindful on what's behind you at all times. And even though out in the cuts, you're still really only about 20 minutes away from restaurants/wineries of the Napa Valley.

As a local, this is one of my favorite places to spend time outdoors. If you follow the road all…read morethe way until it dead ends you can park and follow the trail around the lake, or you can go up into the trails that veer off of the main trial up into the hill. These paths are dog friendly which is a huge plus, and the trails are great for mountain bike riding! We've also kayaked as well and have come across fresh water otters that are so curious and love to follow your kayak. The absolute BEST time to come visit is in the spring when the grass is so green and all of the flowers are blooming. The water is usually very calm and there is a ton of wildlife to just sit and watch. It's one of the most scenic places in the valley, and it's so close to downtown St. Helena so after you can always go get lunch! Whether you're visiting or live in the valley, visit this gem!

Like most lakes in California it's not a natural lake but it's still surrounded by beautiful hills. Plus, it's a lovely drive out from 101 on Dry Creek Road. It might have been cool to go out on the lake too. Our pre-paid, confirmed reservation for a five person pontoon boat was cancelled out from under us with no warning. Nothing was done to make it right. The staff acted like this happens all the time, and that it was our problem. They said the boat was "broken," with no details. It seems more likely that they just double booked and didn't tell us. We booked online, fully paid in advance, and received a confirmation email. What they did do was send us a form email at almost 4pm the day before our reservation. Since it looks like a promotion email, I didn't see it. No phone call, which would have prevented the whole problem. It's amazing when a business tells a rental customer you *must call* to cancel a reservation 24 hours in advance and email cancellations won't be accepted. Yet for the marina staff and management? Different rules. Email cancellations only hours before the reservation and no call needed. Two sets of rules. Even that might have been ok if they had also clearly stated this double standard. As for a resolution, none was offered. We are on a two-week trip to the area so our plans our flexible. Our time of day is flexible. The number of people we can bring is even flexible. But was *any* attempt made to offer an alternative booking? No. They had no other boats to rent except kayaks and canoes, so basically we were S.O.L. But to add insult to injury, they just did not care. Meanwhile, my wife and I made lunches for five people, packed our gear for a day on the boat plus a cooler, we brought along my 76 year old dad as well as our two sons, ages 9 and 12. Sure, we spent two hours driving round trip to the Lake Sonoma Marina to rent a pontoon boat that was "broke down." (See photo below.) Sure we drove 76 miles round trip for nothing. Sure, we burned $15 in gas but who cares. Sure, my wife took off of work to join us for a what could have been a great day on the water. Sure, my sons were disappointed. I just really hope that the management and staff of Lake Sonoma Marina aren't in any way inconvenienced. I'd hate for more than five peoples' day to be ruined due to their thoughtlessness.

That section alone will take you 1.5-2 hours. The last 5-6 miles are unpaved and combo with the narrow roads, with a small vehicle it can be difficult and most importantly nerve racking to navigate. It is not for the faint of heart. One guy who came in on an off road vehicle said to me "I can't believe you made it here" and another person I talked to on my last day said her mother freaked out so bad they were trying to find an alternate way home. There is a lake (obviously) and you can catch small bass. A man we talked to said there is trout earlier in the year when it is colder. There are no running toilets or showers so outhouse only. The yellow jackets are NO JOKE. I woke up the first morning and thought they were swarming my tent but no - they were swarming our table. I would say easily 30 yellow jackets at all times around our table until sunset and if I wanted to cook anything with meat, I'd just give up because the second I opened it, 30 bees would be all over it. Lastly, the spots are first come first serve and there are not many of them
