After hearing about this drive in for many years, we finally drove by when it was open! We were so excited to try it, it didnt matter that we weren't particularly hungry. However, upon entering, we quickly realized why everyone raves about it! The deluxe hamburgers were perfect and the unusually large, fresh, sweet tomato slice caught me by complete surprise. In fact, I opened my burger to gawk. The restaurant was spotless although very busy. Not a single smudge on any table. The workers were spotlessly clean, pleasant and well disciplined. Even though the line was growing for orders, I had my heart set on ice cream so made my husband stand in line while I used the restroom; a spotlessly clean bathroom outside the front of the drive in which required a combination to enter. Probably the biggest surprise when I used this spotlessly clean restroom was the Apothecary soap in a dispenser. (Also spotlessly clean) To say we were impressed is an understatement. I suspect we will continue to stop every time we drive by, whether we are hungry or not! 5 star drive in and we are so grateful we got to try it! read more

Stopped in for my first time recently, after passing it many times on the way to the lake. My family name is Clayton, so I wanted it to be good. It's a classic diner feel, with made to order burgers and shakes. I had the Clayton burger and managed to finish it, minus some of the bottom bun which had fallen apart a bit. I actually liked the split, grilled hotdog. It was different, and with the thin patty and surprisingly thick bacon, it worked. The shoestring fries were plain, but crispy and that's what matters. The jalapeño cheese rounds were pretty good and I'd order those again over the fries. My biggest suggestion is that if you like ketchup on your burger, get it on the side and put it on the top bun yourself. The bottom bun just doesn't hold up well with it. Staff was very friendly to some difficult customers after us, not skipping a beat or losing their smiles. Kudos! read more

My wife and I ate here last week for the first time. This place has the look and feel of a classic old-style burger joint; it was very clean inside and the staff friendly. We both had a bacon cheeseburger, adding lettuce and tomato to the regular spread, a side of onion rings, a chocolate malt and glass of water. My wife really enjoyed her burger because it had lots of catchup on it, I thought there was way too much, and it was only ok. The onion rings were standard, the tartar sauce was homemade, but had too much mayo, only ok. The chocolate malt had a nice malty flavor and smooth consistency, but very little chocolate; what's that about! I just have an issue having to pay for a glass of water!!! read more

Decent road pit stop for burgers and sides. Burgers are good, not great, but overpriced for the feel of the joint. This is the case with the fries and drinks too. However I think that could have passed had it not taken so long for the food to be ready, it took ages and it was "average" busy. A couple notes: don't order a malt. They just charge extra and give you a shake. No malt flavor at all. Fries 4.99 for a large was a joke. It was about the size of a fast food medium for double the price. We went to Eastern Washington and was told about this restaurant. The complaint I had was they had no signage about wearing a mask. The people serving the food weren't wearing masks, and we were the only customers wearing masks. There wasn't even a sign to distance 6ft. If I knew how to file a complaint I would! Came here for the world famous clayton burger as advertised on their billboard. I've been passing through on the way to the lake for years and have always wanted to try said Burger. Inside it was very clean, quaint, quiet and small. I looked upon the description for the Clayton Burger (World Famous). I was intimidated- two burger patties, cheese, bacon and a hot dog. As badly as I wanted to try it something about that hot dog made me wimp out. 1 double bacon cheeseburger and fries later my experience was over. The Burger are slightly overpriced, especially If you're driving from out of town. They are good but fairly basic, made to order. The service is great. After15 minutes she came to my table and said to me, "I was suppose to collect the money, come to the register please.. I went to the register. It was $10.75. I gave her $21.00,and told her,"it is 10.75 change!" She stumbled over $1s&$5,& quarters, struggling to count change. I had to walk her through it. The Customer! Then, I find out the order Had Not been turned in & had to wait another 15 min. During which time, another incompetent employee wondered around looking for someone to serve the food to. Another made a lop-sided ice cream cone, (soft), and nearly dropped it on the way to the customer. When I finally got my 'fish basket-fish & fries," do you think the server asked if I wanted sauces? So at work people have suggested I try this place out if I'm the type that likes small town Drive inns? I'm a sucker for small town old school drive inns. I feels that places like Clayton Drive Inn are the back bone of small towns like this. They offer grilled hamburgers and salty savory tater tots and fries, Hand dip ice cream, shakes, soft serve ice cream, pretzels, corn dogs, and espresso, the list goes on. This place is this towns Dairy Queen and or McDonalds. Their not a replacement for those places, this place is the "Go to" place. And I totally respect that and so should you. This place is very clean and the service is outstanding because they bring your food to you with a smile. I'm sitting in the front of the 70's period correct decor when some local kids come riding their bikes to get their soft serve chocolate-vanilla ice cream cones and they order a large fries which between the three of them share. I remember those days and they still are happening here. How great is that? They have a gas cast iron fire place in one corner and in the other corner a Halloween display of what seems items they have accumulated since the 70's and I love it! As I sip on my iced cold Diet Pepsi and finish my Cheeseburger deluxe with tater tots, I'm hearing Bobby Vinton singing about Venus. Darn! Those fries smell Good? I'm also watching these kids eating that ice cream and it's heading for the middle of their forearms and elbows, and I'm now considering getting ice cream or perhaps a hand dipped shake? I had heard about this place a few times by friends saying how "good" it was. The Clayton burger junior was over priced for the mess that you receive. The bottom bun is soggy by the time you receive your food. It's not worth the mess and frustration, especially for the outrageous price. We also ordered onion rings and fried mushrooms. Not bad, just no flavor with either of them. Had to ask for more than one thing of ranch for two people, after we both had requested it. Like others have said, its teenagers who are working. The problem is with their food, every time we've stopped and ate, by the time we got our food it was cold and it was awful. This is definitely not a fast food place despite it being a "drive-in". Food took at least 20-30 minutes since we ordered a Clayton burger. And it was alright... Not anything to write home about. Not a big fan of a hot dog sliced in half and shoved in my burger which already has two patties. It was also pretty dry and not that flavorful, unless salt is a flavor. We got tater tots which was pretty standard, except the tartar sauce wasn't very tartar-y. Of two malts shakes we got, neither were very malty either. Sorry, don't think we will come back! read more

This is one of those small town places that does a little of everything, but none of them good. The double burger I had was so overcooked and dry you couldn't have squeezed any juice out with a vice. I tried to get my wife to try the Clayton burger but she opted for a regular bacon cheese burger and a malt. The malt was really good, the burger was ok- thin patties and thin bacon. Only been there two times (last time was 5 years ago). Both times the food was great. Great fries, great Clayton burger (had the big one 5 years ago, ordered the Jr this time. Yum!) I've helped and eaten at this place,first as a kid when my parents took me to the little old Drive in across the street,to as a teenager going up to hangout and help my buddy that worked there and now many years as an adult customer. The original owners Don and Lorraine Ball were great people and many parents will tell you they were glad for the good start the Balls,gave them thu the Drive Inn. The food was top notch as was the service. The "new" owners Randy and Taffy Long met while Taffy worked at the Drive Inn with I believe Randy's sisters. As a customer now I can assure you that Taffy serves the best and insists on great service. When I want a burger I want a ClaytonBurger,onion rings and a real chocolate shake. read more
