I have spent a number of cold nights here being warmed up by both the mulled wine and unique atmosphere of Claypots. I never thought that I would live to see the day where I could go out late at night for a drink, order halva whilst I enjoy the smoky sounds of a local pianist as a toy train travels above. I don't know why I haven't been next door yet for dinner because I have heard so many good things about it. It is defiantly on my list of places to eat next.

There is something very charming about Claypots. The place has a soul and is such a cosy place it has that feel as though you've walked into your Grandmothers cottage and she's cooked you a fresh meal. Yes, the meals are fresh, which is the most important thing when it comes to seafood. The Paella there is a hit and the Marinara looked amazing and will definitely be my next choice. The outdoor setting amongst the lights and murmur of voices makes the place feel very alive. You might have to expect to open the wallet a little wider than you had hoped but it's worth it, and also book as it can get over populated. If you are going out for good night you have to spend a little, live a little and just enjoy the food, the wine and the ambiance. Some people I know have complained that it's too busy but I think that adds to the experience and gives the place that extra buzz. After the meal it's totally open to have an extra wine or two after where I leave satisfied even though I had spent a little more than I thought I would.

Love love love!! Claypots is one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne! Although prices have gone up a little bit since my first visit, the seafood is still so fresh, tasty and cooked perfectly. My favourite dishes are: King prawns, shellfish stir fry, crabs and grilled octopus. The bowl of mussels were amazing too but they don't have that on the menu separately anymore. It's normally apart of another dish. Claypots is always busy and sometimes run out of seafood early. So make sure you go there earlier for dinner!

The fact that I love seafood and I have never been to Claypots before baffles me. But after last night's dinner, I no longer have to stay ignorant because this charming no reservation seafood place is beyond good. It's really amazing. We got to the already crowded restaurant in St Kilda at about 6.30 and were so thankful to get a table immediately. About 10 minutes after we were seated, the queue began and snaked around outside the main entrance. Instead of having the seafood platter, we went with individual orders. We had a garlic prawn each as an entrée and we shared the Chill sting ray (which was massive) and a grilled octopus plus an extra order of bok choy in garlic sauce. The massive garlic prawns were done just right (sometimes larger prawns can become overly chewy when over cooked) and I loved the sauce it came in so much, we ordered extra bread so we could lap it up. The sting ray was delicious as well but just a tad bit overcooked as it was a huge slab and the hotplate meant it kept cooking even after it was taken off the fire. But even that small issue wouldn't have spoilt our evening at Claypots. By the end of the sting ray, the three of us were quite full but we waited in anticipation for the octopus which was the icing on the cake for us. Deliciously marinated and grilled to perfection such that the flavours burst in your mouth as you chewed your way through the delightful dish. Drinks wise, I felt like a coke but they only had organic cola which is now officially my favourite beverage and I'm eager to hunt it down to get some for the chiller at home. Claypots is more than just a seafood place to me. The vintage style train seats give it an unmistakable charm while the large octopus hanging from above adds a finishing touch. There is also a heated outdoor area where dozens of ships hang from above, adding to the old-world charm and flavour of the awesome experience. 10 out of 10 I say!

Flounder

What a gorgeous, funky establishment! Seafood was fresh and scrumptious - at our server's recommendation, my cousin and I ordered the flounder and the Singapore claypot. This was more than enough food for two. I do wish there was some chili and spice in the claypot but the flavour of the seafood shone through very well in the coconut curry and rice. I thought the flounder was the best - served whole (head and tail included) lightly crumbed, salted and fried and served with bok choy and potato - it was a generous serve for two people. My one regret was that their chili crab was sold out when we got there. I had serious food envy watching other patrons dig into the crab and mussel dish. Will have to come back! Service was good - it was busy and food took about half an hour to arrive. But we had a good view of the kitchen and the chefs were churning food out like machines. No inefficiencies there. Dinner was followed by an excellent jazz ensemble - what a way to wrap up a Sunday night!

Very cool, funky experience. The food is amazing. A simplistic blackboard menu that changes very regularly. 3 of us shared the crispy skin John Dory and the Cajun flathead. More than enough for 3 blokes.

It was a last minute dinner choice but no regrets. Best seafood in St Kilda. Started with grilled king prawns and mopped up the prawn steeped garlic oil with flat breads. The grilled calamari was perfect and big enough to feed our party of 4. Lastly, ordered the grilled snapper. That came slathered in a char crust of pesto/garlic/curry and the meat milky smooth and fresh. Claypots is a bit hard to notice on the street as they don't have a big sign out front but let the smell of grilled seafood guide you. (Look for the colored windows. It's beside Quan 88) . Has a nice little outdoor area out back.

I have been meaning to come to this place for years! I had heard so much about it from friends and it lived up to my expectations in every way. I sat at the wine bar and had the seafood pie that was very traditional and homely. The service was spot on and I felt like it was a place that will become a new regular hangout!

Grilled calamari was overrated. Singapore clay pot not bad, needed more chilli! Otherwise pretty reasonable seafood experience, nice venue

Claypots is so ordinary: the staff are incompetent and the food is STRICTLY 2.5 star. And expensive- don't bother.

Etes-vous un amoureux de la cuisine française? (Are you a lover of French cuisine?) Then look no…read morefurther than A La Bouffe. The staff at this tremendous French Bistro have managed to really capture the essence of French dining and cooking and made it all available to patrons on Toorak Road. Upon walking through the doors of A La Bouffe you are greeted by a large marble bar downstairs and private more intimate seating upstairs. The whole venue is very elegant and light making for a classy and relaxing atmosphere. I came to A La Bouffe for dinner and was thoroughly impressed; I ordered the Salade De Saumon Fume as entree. This was Smoked Salmon Salad with a Citrus and Dill dressing; very light, fragrant and not to mention tasty. For my main I decided on the Coq Au Vin - Boneless chicken marinated red wine, mushroom and bacon sauce with mash potatoes on the side. Terrific! Washed it all down with a very smooth glass of Shiraz, needless to say I slept like a baby after this meal. A La Bouffe is a perfect French dining experience right in the heart of South Yarra, perfect for lunch or dinner or even a cheeky glass of vins rouge.

There's also parking at the Como across the street, which is pretty handy. Walking in, you can't help but feel drawn into this relaxing and intimate atmosphere. It's perfect for a date (well a very expensive date!) or to enjoy a beautiful dinner service with close friends. I loved it from the moment I walked past the front door. The bar is also a nice touch and it gives you the option of grabbing a seat and having a drink while waiting for your table if it's busy. The staff are amazing, the ones who looked after us were all French which contributed to the whole experience. They are really nice, welcoming and took time in running us through the menu as well as the wine list. Seriously, everything on the menu looks good. We had the escargot and terrine for entree and they were really nice. For the main, we went with the lobster ravioli et crevette and the coq au vin - wow! Just wow! We were quite full after that but, credit to us, we soldiered on and had the mousse au chocolat and creme brulee a la lavende - Oh mon dieu...... C'etait pas croyable! It was as orgasmic as you'd get..... We had such a great time and were the last ones to leave I think but they never pressured us to go and were very accomodating all the way. This place is a must-try! I will definitely return and I can't wait to go back. Make sure you book first - great places like this fill up pretty quickly.

We had a booking but the place wasn't really that busy - they have happy hour from 5-7pm so I think the place had emptied out after that. The menu has a section called "The Bucket List" which is a bit weird, everything is sold in grams (e.g. you can choose between a 150g or 300g portion) and you feel a bit like you need to order a few things to build up a whole meal. I went for the lemon butter prawns (300g) as well as some Asian slaw. The food arrived but not quite at the same time so there was a little bit of an awkward wait but nothing too dramatic. My prawns arrived as a 150g portion as there'd been a mix up but another 150g arrived not long after which was good. Overall, I really liked the prawns - perfectly cooked, nice and juicy and lots of the cooking sauce to dip bread into. The Asian slaw was ok - it was definitely missing something to make it remarkable. Service was a little mixed and there seemed to be a weird dynamic going on between our waitress and the manager - I'm not sure if the waitress was on trial but it seemed like the manager was checking up on her. No big deal. Overall, I liked this place and from looking at their website it seems like brunch/lunch is their thing more than dinner, so I would consider heading back for that next time I'm in Melbourne.

We dropped in on a late Saturday evening (around 8:00pm). It was busy with most customers getting takeout to go. They were a bit slow getting our order cooked but c'est la vie. Menu is up on the walls. You can also order seafood to cook at home. There's a couple combinations to choose from but it's mostly fish and chips. - Seafood delight pack ($28.00 AUD) - 2 fish of the day, chips, 2 prawns, 2 calamari, 2 potato cakes, salad, lemon and tartar. The best thing was the fish; fresh, flaky and nicely battered. The rest was really salty, greasy and soggy. The fries had an unpleasant dry texture. The salad was unremarkable (I can make a better one at home) but at least you get something healthy to counter all the grease. The calamari was dry and chewy. Potato cakes needed some seasoning. The prawns were decent. Also bizarre is that they make their own tartar sauces but didn't give us any to try. Instead, we got two squeeze packets of cheap quality tartar. Would not come back. Ever.

More of Australia's ocean bounty done right…read more Note: Australians take great pride in taking all seafood from sustainable fisheries predicated on responsible management. Part retail fish market, part casual eatery and known for incredibly fresh, gigantic hot and cold combo seafood platters and for the adventurous, do it yourself selections. Great selection of uber fresh, creamy Sydney rock oysters and a crisper, "cucumber" like flavor of Tasmanian selections, perfect natural with their house sweet chili, lime, ginger sauce whose acidic grip makes the clean oceanic flavor shine. The Harvey Bay scallops just cooked through, with a yielding texture, the candy of the sea. Served with a cauliflower puree that is not necessary but adds to the richness. A simple pot of very plump mussels in a creamy white wine sauce also satisfying. Do not pass up the Moreton Bay bugs. Very fresh, tails split and grilled with a lemon butter, good eats. Grilling amplifies the oceanic flavor while the lemon butter adds richness to the tender tails. A crayfish in creamy, cheesy, monray sauce also a great way to enjoy Australia's crustaceans. The flavor of the barely cooked through tail meat is kicked up with the addition of an intense lobster / seafood stock to the monray sauce. Finally fish, lots on offer but do not miss the chance to try the deep sea, Antarctic Glacier 51 toothfish. Large, oily, dense, white flakes with incredible clean, sweet flavor similar but more intense than a cross between scallop and monkfish. Sublime when simply grilled. Fish dishes do come with two sides but those are completely unnecessary. Efficient, friendly though abrupt service. All good as you get your food.
