Smith Island cake is made of many thin layers of yellow cake with a rich fudge like chocolate icing. This cake is the most popular , but my favorite is cookies and cream , Neapolitan or fresh strawberry in the summer , which is super moist. Smith Island cakes have been made since the 1800's , when women on Smith Island would send them with their husbands on the Autumn oyster harvest . We don't eat cake on birthdays because we can't find good ones in Maryland where we are. We usually just have pie for birthdays. We went to the store bakery because it was recommended by local people. We were looking for a Smith Island cake to bring to a family reunion in Delaware. We come from Rhode Island and I had never heard of a Smith Island cake or about Smith Island. Apparently it's a local delicacy and it certainly was interesting and beautiful. We brought it to my aunts house for the barbecue and everyone loved it. We tried it and found it very light with so many layers and it was unlike anything that we have up north. This place is somewhat hidden, but once you find it you walk in and see many workers creating all different kinds of Smith Island cakes. the place smells amazing, and besides taking your special order for a cake, even on the same day you want it sometimes...they also sell slices there as well. I'm so happy that this was my introduction to Smith Island cake because I just don't see how it could possibly get any better. I'm obsessed with trying regional foods and this has been on my list for many years. You can get slices of cake, whole cakes or individual cupcakes of different flavors to go, but walk-in service is obviously not the bulk of their business because the "shop" is pretty much a cash register and a couple of display cases right in the kitchen. The day that I was there, they were loading cake after cake into their delivery van, so they apparently do a good delivery/catering business. read more

Stopped in today to find out that they have expanded the storefront. Couple chairs now to sit on while you nosh on a cupcake. I always enjoy their coconut pineapple cake, today someone beat me to the chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting, they even scarfed the van with pb frosting, not nice. :-( So I picked up a coconut with coconut frosting & the old standard of chocolate with chocolate frosting, good as always. Mom got pumpkin with spiced frosting, not sure on frosting. Said it was good, just like her strawberry one. I like this place cause it saves me from having to do it, prices pretty reasonable for the area. This isn't a city bakery, like NYC, DC, or B-more, in many ways to this old baker it's better. These folks make the best Smith Island cakes east of Smith Island! There is another bakery in the Ocean City area that makes them, but their cakes do not taste nearly as good. Classic Cakes makes wedding cakes and cakes for other occassions as well. They ship Smith Island cakes anywhere, and they have a local delivery service also. We chose not to order a wedding cake for our recent wedding, but decided to have Smith Island cakes instead. Much less expensive, and the guests LOVED them. I put a little handmade sign near the cakes explaining how they are Maryland's official state dessert. Classic Cakes helped us out by wrapping the cake trays for us as well. We had about 50 guests, and we ordered way too much cake. We bought 5, but we definitely could've gotten away with 3! read more

The one with the peanut butter cups on top is out of this world as well. - Call and order your cake well in advance during the holiday rush... do not be that person... just don't. Do not walk in the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and act dumbfounded when there is only a Red Velvet and have the stupidity to complain that thats All they have?? I have seen it happen and its actually kinda funny... but just for my sake. Do not be that person. K? Thanks. "The Meh" - When you call, because I know you will listen to me when I suggest you call. Also ask for directions to where they are located. Do not trust the GPS and confirm which neighbors are in the strip center at any given time. Translation: Its a little funky to find. (9/24/2015) Had a going away party and some coworkers happened to be in Salisbury the day before. Got a Smith Island for our non-Maryland celebree. She was enthralled. We thought this one was very prettily made, consistent thickness of the layers, very flat, even coloring. If I had to say, I would guess these layers were baked as a sheet and stamped out rather than the traditionally individually-baked layers. We found the yellow cake to be rather dry overall. The thin fudge icing was sufficiently chocolately and not too thick. We appreciated that it was not too sweet. Overall, an OK cake, but not life-changing. Either seek out the original company or bake your own if you have such options. read more

This is probably my new favorite bakery! Sadly, this is my last semester at Salisbury University so I will no longer be in the area. Cupcakes were $2.50 each and they tasted amazing. The frosting was great and the cupcake was moist. I've been to Carlo's Bakery (from Cake Boss on TLC) and the Charmcity Cakes Bakery in Baltimore ( from Ace of Cakes on Food Network) and this cupcake was so much better! read more

The Smith Island cakes are delicious; however whether you buy it by the slice, half-cake, or whole...it is very expensive. All of their cakes are delish. If you try a cupcake and you think you are getting a "homemade" cupcake, you will be disappointed. The cupcakes are from a box and taste like it. Having once owned a home in Tylerton, Smith Island, I've been enjoying Smith Island cakes much longer than most people and longer than Classic Cakes has been in business. The owners are from Smith Island and despite the fact that their business has grown, they have stayed true to their original recipe, one of the best, if not the best, I've ever had. For smith island cakes, sure this is the place to go undoubtably but NOT for other event cakes (weddings, parties, etc.). I ordered a cake for a party and was told to email the details of the cake. I never received an email or a phone call saying they could not do any of the requested details (trust me, I did not ask for anything difficult or crazy). They completely ignored my request. The cake looked like it was meant for a child (it was for a middle aged adult). Had they been straight with me from the beginning, we could have worked it out. Instead, they gave me a crappy looking cake that I could have bought at the grocery store, rather than ordering a month or so in advance. I know of SEVERAL people in the Salisbury area who had their wedding, engagement party, or anniversary cakes messed up. So, if you want a great smith island cake - sure call these folks, you won't regret it, but don't let them handle the cake for your special day. read more
