Bathroom out of order... do not go here - service is trash too. There are better cheaper gas stations across the street

In my last year and a half of nonstop travel, I have continually sought out convenience stores and…read moreespecially their cashiers or clerks - because I used to be one myself and because I think they are among the most unsung and underpaid essential workers in our society. In that great search for the perfect convenience store and the greatest cashier, Adel - a 30ish, bearded, Middle Eastern-looking guy who cashiers at this store - is perhaps the coolest and most memorable character I have encountered. He is so laid-back and so quintessentially himself that I assumed, at first, that his supremely flowing presence had to be chemically assisted. Talking to him, you think you have just walked into a Cheech and Chong movie or the great Clerks movie. But when I very playfully mimicked his singing way of speech and his rhythmic way of moving his body as he talked - to ask him if he maybe was just a little bit high - he responded "No" with such calm, happy authority that I now believe him. I think he has just so totally surrendered to being his own quirky self that he doesn't talk like anybody I have ever encountered who was straight. Because he looked Middle Eastern to me and because so many cashiers in these stores are Middle Eastern, I probed for his ethnicity. "Where were you born, Adel? Were you maybe born in India?" In reply, he said the simple word "No" as if he had just delivered me a very important password. "So were you maybe born in Pakistan?" He gave me a big wink and a look of great happiness as he simply said, "No." "Were you born on this planet?" He looked like he was handing me a big yellow rose as he happily exclaimed, "Yes." "Well where on this planet were you born?" "NewYork." It was clear that I was not going to get any information about his ethnicity. Maybe he doesn't have any. Maybe he is simply Adel and nothing else. He clearly defies categorization. I returned to the store today, mostly because I wanted to see Adel again. I bet lots of people go into that store to have these magical encounters with him. He did not disappoint. If his state of consciousness was altered yesterday, it was altered in exactly the same way today. I'm pretty sure blood tests would show him clean. He's just one of the most delightfully odd guys I have ever met. I love him!

Every1 listen up. I think my dads gone crazy. This is legitimately the best coffee in New Orleans…read moreor possibly in the state. I now go to this location almost daily because the coffee tastes so excellent and they have creamer. They also sell drinks and chips and gas station standards but trust me, I'd put their coffee up against the finest cafes in Italy and France and Arkansas. I subtract one star because everyone is really mean or begs you for money or tries to sell you drugs. There is glass between the cash register so you don't have to worry about the corona virus there. Love it!!

Same thing-- after I stopped pumping, the machine kept adding up charges for invisible gas. So much for that "calibration" the clerk kept insisting on. That place robbed me of $6 at the pump and lord knows how many other folks, who didn't catch the glitch! Buyers beware, unless you enjoy paying for gas that you never put in your car.

Pepsi & Ruffles - Woo-hoo!…read more SITREP I couldn't ask for more from the Exxon Mini-Mart across the street from Hotel Modern that has got the munchies and beverages I like for cheap! THE SETUP I am not a big fan of hotel temptations & their placement of expensive LITTLE bottles of alcohol & cans of soda in my hotel fridge. Nor the clever product place of little bags of chips and chex mix for $3 in drawers next to my FREAKIN BED! So the way I HAVE to combat this during my stay here is get inexpensive munchie and beverage options to COMBAT temptation in my own room. MUNCHIES GALORE They had all sorts of cool stuff, but I settle on a big bag of ruffles for $4. The BEST deals here, however, were on my Diet Pepsi - I got 3 2LTR bottles for only $4 as well! Will I be able to finish them over the 4 day-stay? MAYBE. But that wasn't the point. Compare that to the little cans of soda and bottles of tea in hotels and other hotel stores ranging upward to $2-$3 themselves. So I'm ready for when I'm thirsty, and for when I get a mid-night attack for something crunchy and salty. And it won't cost me an arm and a leg in room service charges. THE LOWDOWN Props to Exxon 5-1901 for having my crap, at great prices, for when I need it! [P.S. On the Yelp survey question below that asks about "Parking", I'm checking the box that says, "Valet"] ;)
