My wife wanted a bicycle for Christmas and I really don't know much about bikes (except that they have 2 wheels) so we came here on a Saturday. The staff were very friendly, listened to what we wanted, and showed us some bikes. The prices were definitely more than what you might find at Walmart, but they explained why the quality of their bikes were a lot better and worth the money. We were satisfied and found one in the perfect color that was on sale. When I need a bike, I will come here too. read more

For the second in the last 8 years....when I'm visiting friends in NY and I bring my bike with me, CK Cycles has SAVED THE DAY. Todays episode...your truly decided to not remember to remove and pack his speedplay pedals from his home bike. It was almost not to be but the gentleman who works on bikes and is probably the owner found a used pair of speedplays...and for a meager fee...they work great. Last time... I blew up a sram red derailleur and within 24 hours I had a brand new one. Class shop, class operators....excellent owner in an environment where cycle shops are closing day by day. read more

I found a very nice but old road bike on craigslist. It turns out the rear derailer was actually a mountain bike derailer. No wonder why I couldn't index it. I brought it to CK Cycles, they diagnosed the problem, and gave me options to fix it. They did have to order the parts. Unless you are living under a rock, certain types of parts are very very scarce. It turns out, I called a week later and they had a different part to offer me for the same price. They installed the part perfectly and the bike performs like new. They are very very busy at the moment. They have well over 300 bikes in the shop presently. If you are looking for a bike to buy, they have no inventory. If you've checked around virtually none of the LBS have any inventory. I'm sorry the one gentleman on here had a bad experience but this shop knows what they're doing and are very courteous. They usually have five or six people in the shop and they don't have a dedicated sales person. Whomever is furthest along with their repair usually stops and handles the customers who walk in. They even have an express method for a few dollars more to bump you to the top of the list. I did that and it worked out fantastic. This shop has been around for years and has a very competent and experienced staff. I've never had a bad experience there ever. The best thing to do is give them a call and talk with them. I like the "idea" of the CK experience. They're very personable, and knowledgeable group. Their customer service, however, is poor however. My bike was in there shop for a solid month and while the mechanical repair was good they made no effort to keep me in the loop week after week. Plus, once I got the bike home, it had a flat tire. After a month long wait and $220.00 worth of repairs, it would have been nice if they made sure I was getting my ride back, ready to ride. read more

Had a solidly good experience buying a bike rack at CK Cycles today. It was my third visit to this store, but my first time purchasing anything. The staff has always been friendly and helpful -- today especially so. I worked with Dan -- a genuinely nice guy who has worked there since high school (I'll tell you that is 7 1/2 years, because he almost looks young enough -- to me -- to still be in high school). Before arriving Dan had answered the phone and discussed bike rack options with me, so I knew what they had in stock before arriving (they have a good selection of bike racks, btw). I am super indecisive, and three of the four guys working weighed in on my decision -- gently, no pressure. After finally making my decision, Dan assembled and put the rack on my van. He showed me how to use it, and at this point, I changed my mind AGAIN. Dan swapped out the racks and didn't make me feel bad about. I will also note that Dan, while young (or very young looking anyway), was very professional. While helping me, he greeted customers as they came in, made sure one of the other (newer?? I'm guessing) staff members was attending to a customer there to pick up a bike, and he did all this kindly and without any sign of stress or seeming rushed. In fact, the store was quite busy, but between the four guys working, it seemed everyone as being attended to in a timely manner. As for selection of bikes. It's good. They have a little bit of everything from touring and commuter to road bikes and some kids bikes too. In fact, in general they have every kind of accessory, tool, equipment you might need related to cycling. I just have never settled on one of their brands (I test rode a couple of Felts in the past). I would give them a 4.5 if I could. I bought my first road bike ever here. I had gone to a few other cycling shops and with hearing I was interested in triathlons would immediately direct me to bikes beyond my understanding, skill level and price range. Once I entered in CK Cycles I didn't feel overwhelmed by the sales people, and was able to try about 5 or 6 different bikes on a trainer. He even took pictures of me on the bike so I would be able to see how I was sitting on them. I didn't purchase a bike that day but I was bitten by the bug and was unafraid to make a purchase (unlike other places that intimidated me). They were extremely flexible when I try to negotiate a price since it was a floor model in 2012 and they were getting 2013's in the shop soon and they were looking to get rid of it. They even stored my bike in the winter for 4 months for free after I bought it. Every time I go in there to buy things or a tune up, they recognize me and help me find what I need. I usually get a discount since they knew I purchased my bike there. (Pretty damn awesome!) Sometimes they don't have things in stock but say they will order it for you if necessary. Only thing I would say is tends to be much busier during the summer months I've realized, where I've had to wait a good 10 minutes to be taken care of. Also the hours are a little tough to get around but probably makes service better. read more

I had a positive experience getting service for my bike. I had damaged a cable in transport and showed up Monday morning when they opened - the store got my bike in that day and replaced the derailleur cables at a fair price. The other positive is that I'm just a casual cyclist and while some shops are know for attitude, this shop was friendly and welcoming. read more

Stellar service, workmanship and integrity. My latest experience says it all. My +15 y/o Italian steel job needed a major workover. CK hooked me up with an excellent paint/repair place then put maximum TLC and solidly good judgment into the Campy rebuild (details too numerous to mention). In addition to this ride, they've serviced cross, road and MTBs of mine. Anytime there's been a question or an issue, they are amicable and efficient in getting it resolved. To their great credit, more than a few times they have said "Nah, leave it. It'll be fine as is" while other local shops might say "You need a new bike." After buying a road bike on Craigslist, I dropped in to CK on a rather busy day to get some shoes, cleats and starter accessories. The first associate to help me wasn't much of a salesman (or cyclist as far as I could tell), so I mostly used him to help me navigate the disorganized shoe section (items were not clearly priced). But here is what impressed me. I mentioned that I had my new bike with me, and they said we could mount it on a trainer so that I could try the various shoe/cleat/pedal combinations. The owner (Jeff?) got involved and set me up with two different shoes, added a washer to give me some crank clearance, and also swapped out my quick release skewer, all while bopping back n forth to the phone, register and entertaining other customer and associate requests. He also put together a little starter bag of accessories for me and fixed it under my seat. Of course, at check out he only charged for the items, so the personalized shoe fitting was just in the name of good service, so I appreciated that. I guess moral of the story is to work with the owner when possible, esp if you're a cyclist. He has been with the business for many years, is very approachable (important for newbies like me) and as new owner seems personally committed to providing a positive shopping experience. read more

I spent the afternoon with my wife looking for a new bike for her. We went to 3 different bike shops. The service at the first two was awful. We walked into CK and expected more of the same. Boy was I wrong. The sales dude (Rojat?) was very friendly and actually knew the differences between the various models and brands. I believe in local bike shops. This is the bike shop closest to my neighborhood. I've given them a couple of chances. The first time, we were looking for help with buying a trailer to pull our toddlers on our bikes, and were really surprised at how rudely and dismissively we were treated. This week I called to ask if they would consider doing a basic bike clinic for myself and some of my girlfriends. The surly kid on the phone put me on hold and then came back and told me "All of the bike shops are really busy right now and don't have time to teach you how to fix your bike. I guess I could take your email..." to which I politely declined, looked up the information for The Down Tube in Albany, got a lovely young man on the phone who was more than willing to host a basic bike maintenance clinic for the 10 of us, for only $20 per person. So maybe if you're a hard core cyclist, this is your store. But as a casual bicyclist, looking for a local shop to service my and my family's bikes, I've just not been remotely impressed with CK. read more

I'm getting back into riding this year and still have the Trek touring bike I bought from this store when it was under a different name. They always had good service and I believe they have the same owners?. At one time the weld on the bike failed and ruined the frame and brakes. This was very unusual thing to happen, but the owner worked with Trek and got me back on the road again at no cost to me. I'm much older now and still trying to figure out what type of bike will suit my current needs, however, I'm certainly going to stop in and consider my past history when buying a new bike. read more

I think folks need to have more than one visit to any shop before writing a review, good or bad. I have shopped at CK for a few years, but bought my bike at Downtube. I found both stores to be very helpful and professional. CK certainly provides great service and do the little things right. The store can get quite busy at times so having some patience will help. CK tends to have more folks available to assist, but they are not always the most experienced. If they aren't helping sufficiently, just talk to Jeff the owner, he always finds the time to help. I don't think folks should trash Downtube either. It's a good store, very helpful and offers a different selection of bikes ( I bought my Trek there) . Given the limited choices in the area for bike shops, I think we have two good ones available. read more

Totally unacceptable! Absolutely atrocious! Visited them over three times after I sold my car and was looking for an advice and general introduction to cycling. Zero positive result. OK, I can understand that, they may not be willing to spend time to solidify a new "converter" into cycling (although I would not not understand why if you are a "Cycles" shop). So I did a research by myself, got a few good offers from outside of NY state for a bike. Came back to discuss the offers with Ck Cycles, just to get a "professional" opinion - again, "useless" would be too much of the credit to this store. Every time I come in it seems to be only one person working with customers although I see 4-5 people at the store every time I come in. What are they doing there? Its a mystery, although they pretend to be busy with "something." Once I got my bicycle from the other distributor, I stopped by at this place for a practical reason - needed to have a chain replaced, not because mine has broken but I wanted to have a more solid chain to be placed on my bike. I was told I would have to join the line, the waiting list of about 3 weeks to have an actual date scheduled. Once I asked if on the day "scheduled" I could have the chain replaced within the same day, I was told no! It would take another week to have the job done! Really???!!!!! Are you kidding me?! I have my own personal business and if I ever told something to my clients I would be bankrupt a long time ago! Unbelievable! This place is dying but wouldn't admit that. Well, they are dead to me anyways. I would never in my life recommend them to anyone! R.I.P!. read more

I was looking for a bicycle store easily accessible from the New Scotland area where I could buy hardware parts for attaching a rack to my bicycle. I bought my road bike online recently and it didn't have eyelets for attaching anything, which I thought was going to be a problem but could be solved. I didn't want a dinky seat post rack but one that could accommodate a German-made Racktime rack capable of supporting 55 lbs. So I had the rack and the bike but no way of putting it on. I called up Downtube on Madison Avenue and they were very unhelpful, very unimaginative is I think the right way of putting it. Whatever part I needed would have to be special ordered, but I could do that myself via the internet! I just wanted to get the job done and be able to ride my bike to work the next morning. So I called up CK Cyclery and spoke to a teenager who told me they could help me out. I took my bike there after work, and the same very able and knowledgable teenager rummaged around in the shop area and found exactly what I needed. He attended to me in a very professional manner; I walked out not too long after walking in with exactly the few simple parts that I needed for $8, and was able to tinker around at home and get the rack attached simply and securely. This place is real, with real people working there who have the imagination to help a customer find what they need even if it isn't readily apparent. That is the difference between a great neighborhood business and some corporate store similar to LL Bean or Dicks where if you can find what you want, great, but if it takes some real customer service and real thinking, forget it. I didn't give 5 stars because I did not go there to buy a bicycle, so this review doesn't cover that kind of experience, which is maybe what people would use Yelp for. read more

I would not recommend this shop for high end equipment/maintenance. They are simply not equipped to work on high end products, not even remotely. You want a cheap bike, which they can handle, then go to Walmart. You want high end, try anyone else. The staff are miserable and generally unhelpful, and even the most routine work is overpriced by a factor of at least two in comparison to any other shop around. Simple repairs are not just expensive, but almost always goofed up as well. I see less and less customers in this shop. Something is afoot. read more

I've been a customer for 5 years now and they are THE BEST business I've ever dealt with in my life (and I'm 65). I bought a new inexpensive bike from them back in 2007. I really got into riding and being a big guy, I'm tough on a bike. I bought the new one because I destroyed my old Columbia when I first started riding seriously in the spring of 2007. Needless to say I did have issues with the new bike early on but CK saw to it that I was back up in short order and worked very hard to keep me there. Their service after the sale is, quite simply, beyond compare! After the initial issues they had me fixed up in short order and 7000 miles later I traded up to a better model. I cannot recommend them enough. The selection is good, the prices competitive and if he doesn't have it he will and does order it if that's what you need. They won't sell you something that's in stock simply to make a sale. I would never consider shopping anywhere else. I only wish more businesses could be as sincere and supportive of their customers long after the initial purchase and guarantee expire. I only wish I could give them 10 stars instead of 5. read more
