Great for hot coffee, decent to work in, but terrible sandwiches.
Bagels - Skip 'em here. Not fresh enough to eat untoasted (chewy) and when i asked for it toasted, they put it in a PANINI PRESS. So the inside was still chewy and the entire bagel was squashed and had the texture of the press ridges burned into it. I asked for it with cream cheese and got a tiny tub of Philadelphia with a plastic butter knife. There wasn't enough cream cheese to cover the bagel and also...tiny tub of Philadelphia? ehhh...
Sandwiches - Okay, but just okay. Expect cold cuts, cheese and fixins. The croissants are good! But mine was marred by the tuna salad, which was AWFUL - WAY too much mayonnaise, which left it sort of tasting like a mayonnaise sandwich. It seems like maybe it came from a tub they got at Costco. I imagine the chicken salad is much the same... I probably wouldn't come back to eat, but if I was here and hungry I'd get a turkey on wheat, no chips please. They came with tortilla chips from a bag that I neither wanted nor asked for. A bed of lettuce would definitely be more welcome. Real greens instead of iceberg lettuce on the sandwich too, for that matter.
Why with the paninis? What is with Cleveland and paninis? Has anyone wanted a panini since 1994? Has nobody in the Cleveland area ever been to Italy to have a real panini? (They are actually delicious because the ingredients are good.) The ones I've seen here are gross American-style cold cut sandwiches squished in a sandwich press. Expand your sandwich horizons, Cleveland! Take advantage of the awesome stuff we have locally! When I think about all that cured meat at the Market, sandwiches like these make me cringe. For a place with no kitchen, Civ is doing...well...the bare minimum. They could really do so much more with so little investment that it's mind boggling. It almost seems like they just don't care enough to try, or they really need some life breathed into them. I wish they would follow the principle that it's better to not have something than to have something that is done poorly.
Pastries - Look okay. Haven't tried them. Some of the space could definitely be carved out for a toaster oven.
Coffee - Cheap and very very good. Espresso was good. I don't get too into the fancy stuff, so I can't attest to any of that.
Iced coffee - served in hot cups. Are you done facepalming yet? They advertise that Toddy-brewed coffee is now available! As if iced coffee hasn't been a thing for over a decade. Cold brew
Workspace - free, easy wi-fi. But if you need an outlet, make sure to fight for one of the two seats that are near them.
Atmosphere - YES! This is done right. Cozy and beautiful old-world bookshelves, a gorgeous antique bar, friendly staff, food that is good enough if you're starving. Fantastic outdoor seating: sitting outside with a cup of coffee is the thing to do at Civilization. read more
