City wine merchant is a nice small quaint wine store. When you enter the store, it has a very elegant type of feel and look. Eric (owner) was very inviting and conversational, he took the time to explain the different types of wines. He also gave honest suggestions, and I felt it wasn't based on trying to sell me the higher priced bottles of wine. His suggestions was truly based on what he felt I would enjoy. This place is no where near the size of a "chain" liquor store but the amount of quality wines being sold is totally worth shopping here. read more

I heard through Step out Buffalo that City Wine Merchant was a great place to come and check out different types of wines. I know they do wine tastings every Thursday and haven't been able to check it out yet but I know they do have leftovers on Friday which I have been able to benefit from. I visited this business on a Friday and was able to try a few reds and whites. They were good but nothing that I wanted to take home. Their staff is very friendly and knowledgeable which is why I really liked coming here. I was looking for a red that was under $20 but still regarded as a good wine. I was looking for something dry but didn't want a merlot. The staff member recommended a Schug Pinot Noir which was was rated a 95 but was only $18. It took me a while to crack it open as I was trying to hold on to it because I knew it would be good and didn't want to quickly waste it. This wine did not disappoint-very smooth and enjoyable. I highly recommend it. I then picked out a white wine because it had a nautical themed bottle. I'm a sucker for buying wine because of the bottle I have to say. I drank this one first and it was pretty good but nothing compared to the pinot. If you are looking for a wine for a special occasion or party I recommend visiting Wine City-you will easily be able to pick something out with the help of their staff and will not have to worry about it not tasting good. So nice, I visited twice this week. First, to sample a run of interesting wines from all over, as selected by the staff, and second, to try a handful of bubblies ('tis the season). Both times, I found the staff enthusiastic and able to answer even my most esoteric wine-nerd questions. The crowd in the store was just as knowledgeable, too, so it was fun to chat. And the environment seemed to encourage it: CWM's a bright, well-lit and well-designed place with minimalist fixtures and a long table down the side of the store that seems to invite you to take off your coat and stay awhile. Thus, it has more in common with the Apple store aesthetically than the local liquor store -- but instead of fending off questions from bespectacled computer guys about the specs of your iPhone, you're gonna get asked about what you're drinking. The folks at CWM tell me that the store's current focus is on small growers, so don't expect to find your favorite Yellowtail blend or a bottle of Veuve Cliquot here. But hopefully the good folks at CWM can steer you towards something better, anyway. And if you're still not feeling surefooted in the land of tannins and terroir, they do wine classes to help show you the way. Admit it: you were gonna drink your way through the cold Buffalo winter anyhow, so might as well do it up right at a spot like CWM. read more

During my stay here in Buffalo, I've frequented this shop. The staff and owners are wonderful and welcoming. Their suggestions have been excellent and I haven't been disappointed in any of their recommendations. My only regret is that I can only carry two bottles at a time walking back to my hotel. It's a clean and lovely store with lots of space, and a decent selection of wines from around the world, most of which seemed fairly priced to me. The saleswoman was very friendly and helpful, and I walked away with half a bottle of Brunello. An even bigger half-bottle selection or more wines from NY state would be great! read more

When I first spotted City Wine Merchant I assumed it would be too pretentious and expensive for me to shop at. But my fiance started working right down the street and often popped in to pick up some wine for us. I finally made my way down there with him and was surprised at the wide variety of price points. I am definitely a wine novice but the staff is very pleasant during tastings (I've been to a couple) and once they even got pizza to go along with everything! And the staff gives you the perfect distance while I walk around the shop and gawk at the most expensive bottles and read all the descriptions. This is my favorite place to buy wine in the city. Yes, it looks a bit ritzy and could be construed as pretentious...until you walk in. The selection is smaller than the bigger liquor stores like Premier, or even Gates, but it would be hard to find a bad wine in the place. I was here for a recent tasting and was impressed. This is a small store, with carefully, hand selected wines. From an outside glance, I would probably walk by thinking "they will be too fancy for me," but I was pleasantly surprised by their business. I appreciated the modern space, culled down selection, wide array of price points ($8-$100+), and the customer service. One of the owners approached me and was very kind. He informed me of some of his favorites, didn't scoff at my price point, offered a business card, and welcomed me back for a future tasting.
