I'm 65 and have been working on my own cars for 50 years. So I bring my 2012 Nissan Cube in for the last ever mandatory inspection (NH has abolished it- hooray)... Dave tells me that it needs new struts and stabilizer (sway bar) links. I go to the lift and look. OK, 2 inches of the springs have broken off where they meet the bottom cup. Fair enough. Coulda kept riding on them another two years or so, given that I drive it 2000 miles a year... mostly to Market Basket in Rindge and my vet in Jaffrey... and Porcfest... but OK. They wanted 800 bucks- more than 400 for parts. So... I ordered the parts for less than 200 directly from Detroit Axle and did it myself. The bear of the job was (duh) getting the old stuff apart... rusted nuts... yuk yuk... but they all came loose thanks to PB Blaster and 25 year old Craftsman Air Tool Power. The rest was a cake walk. Brought it back to them and they slapped on the sticker. One last thing- they said that I would need an alignment, which was a flat out lie. Per the Nissan Cube factory shop manual, there is no camber, caster or kingpin adjustment. Toe-in was unchanged, as the rack was never detached from the knuckles. I wish I could give less than one star. DON'T GO HERE!! I went for an inspection and could tell right away they were trying to charge me for things my car didn't need. They said I had foggy headlights, which I had buffed six months prior. They also tried to get me to buy new tires, saying mine were too worn to pass, which was nonsense. So I take my car to a different shop and they agreed that my headlights are fine and my tires have at least another year on them. But the real kicker is that tire city flagged my car for rust, which this new shop agreed was not necessary. And TC flagged the rust in the state inspection portal, forcing me to get the work done. So now My car will not pass inspection unless I drop a whole lot of money on bodywork or get a new car. read more

David, the manager, at City Tire was wonderful to work with. I had one of those Free State inspection coupons from the Keene Family and Shopper book so I decided to have my car inspected at City Tire. Unfortunately, it failed the inspection, because of a leak in the catalytic converter. Funny part is when I left the house my wife said "I hope it fails", because she didn't like the exhaust noise so we knew there was an issue with the exhaust. City Tire quoted over $500 to replace the catalytic converter. My 2009 Nissan Altima Hybrid was 10 years old and had 98,000 miles so I let them change the catalytic converter; however, much to my surprise, when I checked with my Nissan dealer the following day I discovered that there was a 15 year 150,000 mile warranty on my catalytic converter. I don't believe that City Tire knew this so it's my fault not theirs. Federal law states that car manufacturers must warranty catalytic converters for 8 years 80,000 miles. About 5 days later, I took my 2009 Nissan Altima to the Nissan dealer to check out a noise. They determined that the car needed a passenger side front wheel bearing and noticed that the struts were leaking. They quoted me over $1,000 dollars. I decided to get a second quote at City Tire. City tire saved me a nice chunk of $$$$ and did an excellent job. One other side note: After City Tire changed my catalytic converter, I brought my car to Fairfield Kia for an oil change, while they had it on the lift I asked them to check the work that City Tire did on the catalytic converter. They said that they "City Tire" had done an excellent job. Never once did City Tire ever try to sell me something that I didn't need. read more

Let me start out by saying that I have taken my van to City Tire since I got it in December of 2008, with the exception of a year and a half I lived in NY. Let me also say that the ONLY reason they are receiving 2 stars from me is because of Bill. I recently moved back to the Keene, NH area and was positively stoked to bring my van back to City Tire. Bill is incredibly personable, and I feel that he has always been honest with me. I'm one of those people that name their vehicles, and my 2006 Dodge Caravan is named Eugene, which is how I will refer to him from now on. Eugene and I went in because I had been noticing some pulsation in the brakes when I applied them going downhill - so I let my buddy Bill know what's going on, he'll check it out during Eugene's oil change/tire rotation. About an hour goes by and this guy Dave, who I had never met before, comes into the waiting room and explains to me that there's a lot of work to be done on my brakes - I need new drum cells, calipers, pads, rotors, etc - the whole bit. Alright, I think, Eugene has 100,000 miles on him, it's about time for some major work. Like any normal person, I asked Dave if he could give me an estimate, to which he responded condescendingly and, I felt, with an aire of "you have a vagina, you don't know jack about cars." Nice and businesslike. Alright, I think, it's looking to be about $800-900, great. I leave to grab a coffee and have a few smokes, wander around town for a bit - Dave had been courteous enough to tell me that it would be awhile, would I like to be driven to the mall to go shopping? (Are we seeing a theme here?) No thanks honey, but I'll be sure to remember every sexist comment you made to me for proprietary purposes later on. About mid-day I went back to City TIre - Eugene is sitting out front! Maybe there wasn't so much damage - right???? I check out with Bill and am positively stoked to get on my way and with my day. IMMEDIATELY off the lot, the brakes are making a WORSE sound. I think, alright, they need to be broken in a little. I had a craft fair that weekend in Stockbridge, MA - about a 200 mile round trip - so Eugene and I set off our way Saturday morning. On the ride home, going up route 91 N at a normal speed (70-72 tops), the shaking in my tires became so violent that I called a friend to tow me home - both rear and front tires shook so intensely, I thought stuff was going to start flying off of my vehicle. The friend and I re-torqued the tires and I let Eugene sit for all day Sunday - call up my buddy Bill first thing Monday morning and he says bring it in right away. Alright! Spent another 3 hours at City Tire watching them take Eugene in and out of the bay - Bill comes back and says that I was given defective rotors, and they can't find anything wrong with the rear. They balance all the tires and about three hours later, I'm on my way - again. Yes, Dave was there for my second visit but was curiously quiet the entire time. About fifty miles off the lot, my brakes start making the noise again - So I call up City Tire again - and Dave answers. I explain to him what's going on, how the sound is worse than when I first brought it in to them, and how I really need for them to actually do the job that I paid them to do in the first place. Dave tells me that they can do an estimate for me to figure out what's wrong - wait, what? No. No-no-no-no-no -- I already brought my vehicle to you for the same issue. Twice. So I tell him that I don't understand why it's making a worse sound when I first brought it in, and isn't it curious, and how can they expect me to shell out more money when they didn't fix it in the first place? Dave lets me know they aren't running a charity over at City Tire, and that I could try taking it to one of those hour shops - wait, what? You say I should go elsewhere? No problem. I take Eugene to Fletcher's in Brattleboro, VT, which was highly recommended to me by numerous people. Right off the bat Don says, after I explain the issue, is that it's in the rear, for starters, and it sounds like a combination of rotors and torque - Bam. When I came back to pick Eugene up, Don explains that City Tire had put the brakes on too tight in the back, and so it was heating up the drum cells and rotors. Don popped in a new set of rotors for me, and charged me $65 for the service - wait, what? You had my van all day and spent all this time on it, and not only are you being honest, you're not ripping me off?? I scheduled my winter oil change with them immediately. Short of the long - Dave at City Tire, you just lost a very loyal customer - Your condescending, sexist attitude was unnecessary. The fault was yours. The problem was yours. The error was yours. You should have stood by your work. I used to send people to City Tire for everything - now Fletchers is getting your business and I'm warning people to stay FAR FAR away from City Tire. read more

if you get a quote be sure to get a second quote elsewhere. You could save a lot of money. An estimate was given for an extremely large amount listing several repairs which were absolutely necessary according to City Tire. When this same vehicle was taken elsewhere the only repair needed was to have a brake job. All the other expensive repairs were not needed! What a price difference! It certainly was a smart idea to go to another repair facility. This resulted in a very large savings. This started us thinking about previous work done at City Tire. The previous trust was diminished..No more City Tire for us!!! read more

I had not driven my car for awhile. It needed a state inspection. I had a coupon. I should have held the coupon until the end, but I did not. The car was three months late for an inspection, so it was obvious the car was not driven for that time. They failed my for "rotted brake rotors" all four, "rotted brake pads" all four corners. Surface rust yes, from sitting, but 'rotted'. Not rotted brake lines, rotted brake rotors and pads. Windows worked for me, but not them. Is "fuel fill spout leak" part of a N.H. State Inspection? I just don't fill my car. In the end an estimate for over $1000, because I used a coupon. I am on the lookout for a trustworthy mechanic. I will not even get a flat fixed here. read more

We made the unfortunate mistake of getting our car inspected at City Tire in Keene, NH. After putting our car up on a lift and inspecting our car, one of the workers tells us that all four of our tires need to be replaced before they will pass our car for inspection. We told them that the tires are only a year old and that we were going through a tough time financially. They didn't care. They said that the only way we could pass the inspection was to replace all four tires at a cost of $600. They were more than happy to offer to replace the tires for us and they even tried to convince us to get their credit card to pay for the tires. We then told them that we can't afford that and we left knowing it was a scam. We then took our car to Chesterfield Tire and, surprise, surprise, our car passed inspection. Yes, our two front tires have some wear but not enough to fail an inspection. Our back tires are still in great condition (we even did the penny test) proving that City Tire completely lied and tried to take advantage of us. We will never go to City Tire again and shame on them for trying to scam hard working people out of their money. read more

City Tire is a good place in a great location if you need tires or other auto work. The location right on Main Street makes it extremely convenient to drop your car and go to lunch or do some window shopping on Main Street. Other tire stores in Keene hold you hostage since there is nothing around them. My only issue is that they tend to be really busy and can't always fit me in and complete a job within a hour or two. Frequently they ask me to leave the car for half a day. That's not always possible. read more
