I needed a large oil painting which was basically a realistic oil sketch portrait with no background (simply primed canvas) cut down and put on new stretchers. It was wrapped in bubble when I picked it up and paid $250. When I went to hang it, there were large wrinkles on all four corners. It had not been properly stretched. When I went back the next day to complain, he took no interest and offered no help blaming it on its condition. I went home and found help on u-tube. That by spraying the back of the canvas with water and the use of a hair dryer I could tighten it up a bit. Since there were no shims, that wasn't an option. He talks a good game and is charming unless you have a problem with his work. Since I did not want a frame for it, it doesn't matter if he has a good eye. The work was poorly done and unprofessional. Just came here to get a bunch of cheap posters and place mats that I bought on a trip to be framed as wall-art. You'd never know what I brought in, based on the end product. WOW. Sam presents a great selection of frames, glass, fitting styles, etc. At first I was a little reluctant because the quotes weren't cheap. I've been to cheaper places in Alphabet City. But you know, you get what you pay for. It was definitely worth paying the premium for this fantastic service. The work was done quicker than expected, and Sam's hours are very flexible versus other vendors in the neighborhood. It's actually cheaper to find photos/posters to be framed, than to try to buy ready-to-hang wall-art. I was ready to give this shop a five-star review. They did a great framing job for me - speedy, professional, beautifully-done, and several days ahead of time. Then, I had a really bad experience that I would like to share. l came into the shop soon after opening this week carrying an envelope with two small maps I wanted framed. There was only one employee there, who I later learned was their part-time framer. He said he couldn't help me with pricing or selection of frames. I was running errands in the neighborhood so I asked if I could leave the items there and come back later and talk to another employee, He said, sure. When I came back later, he was gone and the package was gone. Sam called him and he confirmed that I had dropped off an envelope but "it was gone when I left. Perhaps he took it with him after all." I had just purchased the two maps at a local antique map and print shop. I can (unhappily) accept the monetary loss but I will never find those two maps again. read more

I probably have around 500+ picture frames around my apartment for photos I've taken so I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on frames, but when I got married and had my Ketubah made I needed something beyond your basic frame for this. I visited a few frame shops that were recommended to me by others but didn't like the frames available or the pricing or the turn around time at those places. Out of pure coincidence, I came across City Gallery Framing while walking my dog, and came back later in the day to inquire about their frames/pricing etc. I got to meet the gallery owner and one of the employees who were both so incredibly helpful, and patient as I perused for a good 45 minutes at all their amazing frame options. They took the time to take frames I liked around the shop and laid them out on the table for me to be able to visualize how it will look with the Ketubah. I eventually found the perfect one! They were so quick in framing, very affordable for having such high end frames, and had a crazy amount of options to choose from. I highly highly recommend them!! read more

I've been going to see City for 4 years now, not that it's a long period of time considering Hialrio, been framing in this lovely space in a lovely gallery and he was was working in KEW Gallery more than 30 years. almost every body in this neighborhood knows him.. It's clear that they take their work seriously and the finished products always leave me happy. A local artist recently recommended that I check out this place; and I'm glad that I did. Framing to me is not only protection/preservation but also the "final touch" that complements the artwork. It is where the collector adds his personal interpretation to the artwork. As a result, I have long agreed to accept the price of J Pocker for its quality. I was skeptical at using other framers, and only decided to "give it a shot" because the artist herself spoke highly of them. When I got my first frame from Sam (the owner) and Hilario (the framer) I was instantly sold - for far more competitive pricing I see no sacrifice in the quality or attention to detail, from glazing to matting to sealing. The frame felt personally made, and that is a high accomplishment in framing. Both Hilario and Sam have a good eye in finding the right frame options that do not conflict with the art. My experience could not have been more different - or unhappy - then the other reviews. Promised for Thursday. I called Saturday when I had not received the item or a call, to be told framer had a medical emergency. No explanation why I wasn't called in two-day miss. Monday promised; not delivered; got exact same framer story (raises doubts about accuracy). Tuesday went to the shop; was first told it had been delivered but they called driver and found otherwise. They promised delivery by Wednesday at 11; small price concession. Finally delivered about 12:30 - and the job did not conform to our discussions in appearance making it not fit. I hung it elsewhere than originally intended and will have next framing done elsewhere. The only accurate piece of information I seem to have been given was the address. read more

On the recommendation of a colleague, who has had great results, I took a water color on canvas that was made by a personal friend for framing. It was a graduation gift for my son. Sam helped me select the perfect frame and offered free delivery in the neighborhood. However when the finished product arrived, and my son removed the plastic wrap, we saw that the corner of the frame had been chipped, no doubt damaged during delivery. I took it back and they attempted to repair it but the result was less than perfect. So Sam generously offered to completely replace the frame with a brand new one so that the end result was good as new. He wanted to be sure that we were satisfied with the finished product. Came here because I had a horrible experience at the frame shop few blocks of this place. I'm glad I did! The owner, Sam,here was extremely nice and walked us through many different options for canvas stretching and framing. I asked him about the price and gave us very reasonable prices. I had an extremely positive experience with Sam. First, he spent a lot of time with me picking out the perfect frames to fit my degrees. He offered advice in a non-judgmental, but clearly informed way and his knowledge of the different materials used made me feel very comfortable that my degrees would be in good hands. Then, the turnaround time was much faster than he had initially quoted. When I picked up my degrees, I was initially unhappy because they appeared to be a bit tilted. However, when I mentioned this to Sam he was extremely accommodating and offered to fix the framing for free (and quickly) and then he hand-delivered them to my office so that I did not need to make another trip to his store. I would absolutely use him again for anything that I need framed as he not only did a fantastic job but was extremely easy and accommodating to work with. read more

This guy is really the worst. The first time I had an expensive print framed at this shop, the guy already treated me like a jerk who knows nothing. Anyways, I thought to myself - as long as he does a good, I can stand that. When I returned to pick up the item, I was initially quite happy as the result looked well (through bubble wrap). At home, after unwrapping the piece, I realised that the frame had three major dents and scratches. I thought this way terrible and emailed the owner of this shop to reconcile. No answer to my emails. Some weeks later, I went back as I had another thing to frame and thought to myself: "Let's give him another try". This time the result was even worse: The frame way okay this time but on the glass (within the visible area) was a production stamp from the glass company that does not come off. To sum up, you pay what you get for. This shop is cheap but their work is really sloppy. I would definitely recommend to go elsewhere! read more
