    Fried oyster "Po Boy"
    Jason P.

If you think somebody is pretending to be from Hartford County, casually slide them a pic of a Yellow City Fish Delivery truck and ask "you ever seen one of these before?" If they say "No", then they're BUSTED! Because those yellow trucks are making deliveries everywhere. Wethersfield-based City Fish is a seafood market and distributor, and it also has an area where they make (1) fried seafood like shrimp, fish, scallops, clam strips and whole bellies, (2) sandwiches such as lobster rolls, and (3) other food such as soups and crinkle cut fries. Living nearby, I've been to City Fish numerous time over the years, but I'm limiting this review to a recent lunch order. I will say if you live in the area and want high quality seafood for home cooking, I can't think of a place I'd rather go. I ordered a Fried Oyster "Po Boy". I probably wouldn't have called it a Po Boy since it lacked a crusty French bread and we're not near Louisiana, but it was a good sandwich. The oysters seemed fresh and they were tasty. The breading was decent. The bread was soft on the outside and grilled inside. The grilling was a nice touch. The sauce (meant to me Cajuny, I guess) was pretty good and the sandwich also had lettuce. I often enjoy City Fish's fries as a good change of pace. I don't know if this is true, but I've always assumed that they're cut in house because the cut thickness varies. My recent fries had a great texture and they were good. Four Stars

The food here is delicious. They have a fish market where you order seafood at the counter, and don't forget to grab a number at the kiosk upon entering the establishment. Or go to the take out counter and order your food and then bring it into the dining room to eat and enjoy.

They have their own wine and liquor store, plus a grab-and-go, buffet-style area with fresh, hot food. There is also an ice cream station with cotton candy and strawberry soft-serve, which is delicious. I especially love the cone cups because if the ice cream melts, it doesn't drip all over you. One of my favorite parts is the selection of pre-prepped meals you can take home and throw right in the oven, like Chicken Cordon Bleu and stuffed chicken with spinach and artichoke, along with many other options. It makes dinner so much easier. The only downside was that the avocados all seemed very overripe, so those probably aren't the best thing to buy here. Other than that, the store is well stocked and easy to shop in. I also really appreciate that they have real checkout counters instead of only self-checkout. The employees are friendly, helpful, and the service is good. Prices run a little on the higher side, but if you look around, you can definitely find some decent deals. Overall, it's a convenient and enjoyable place to shop, especially for the pre-made meals and family-friendly atmosphere.

I wasn't mentally prepared for what happened next, but it was entertaining. When you first walk in, you get the full bombardment of sights and smells. Like a mix of a fairgrounds and a convenience store. Then all the displays and aisle lead to a zig zag path with no nice way to circumvent. You have to follow the path, and along each bend is the grocery's brand of products. Dotted along the path are a number of animatronics. Singing and dancing fruits, veggies, and animals greet you with a cavalcade of noise and motion. None of them annoying, but it's something you need to adjust to as you go about your supply run. Eventually got to the meat section, and the quality and price were fairly reasonable compared to competitors. They have large pieces of meat that the butcher can clean up and cut into whatever thickness you like. Pricing of the other groceries varies, and the selection is usually limited to a few options. But the quality of the staples makes it a worthwhile trek. The staff at the time I went was not very present, but the cashier was friendly. It's not a constant stop, but one that I would go to for the freezer restock. For those who have not tried them, expect rainforest cafe or bugaboo creek and prepare for a walk.

Conveniently located between Route 9 and the Berlin Turnpike, they've been serving up hot dogs, sausages, deli meats and cheeses, a big selection of house-smoked meats, prepared foods, steaks, ground beef, seafood, chicken and sandwiches since 1964. They sell bundled packages of burgers, steaks, and chicken to feed an army at your next barbecue. And if you happen to be in the market for frozen cubes of goat, well, they have that too. In all seriousness, their product selection is quite impressive. We stopped by yesterday and picked up two sandwiches, a container of chili and a half sour pickle for $26. My turkey and pepper jack cheese sandwich was excellent. First of all, the amount of fresh and delicious turkey was very impressive, I mean it was really piled sky high on a soft and fresh bulkie roll. My wife's ham and cheese was an equally generous sandwich. Half a sandwich was all we needed for lunch. Oh, and that pickle was pretty darned good too. I haven't tried the chili yet, but based on the overall excellence of our experience, I'm sure it will be fantastic.

I also ordered a cup of clam chowder, but was disappointed to see them warming it up in the microwave. That kind of took away from the "fresh seafood" experience I was hoping for. Unfortunately, the lobster roll was way too salty, and I even found a hair in mine. I was going to say something, but my husband said to just leave it alone and decided we wouldn't be back. The coleslaw was full of black pepper and really unpleasant. One bright spot was their sweet little daughter who was helping clean up--she came over and kindly asked if we had any trash for her to throw out. My husband gave her a little tip--such a cutie and a hard worker. Overall, it's a nice location and has a lot of potential, but the food didn't meet expectations at all.
