The employee at the door, who later identified herself as the assistant manager, did not greet us, welcome us, or acknowledge us in any meaningful way. When I selected shoes and had my granddaughter try them on, the employee made no effort to offer assistance, ask if we needed help, or check if we had found everything we were looking for. When I went to check out, the assistant manager simply walked to the register and told me to bring my items over. She did not ask if I was ready to purchase or if I had found everything I needed. I also requested a military discount and was prepared to show my military ID, but was told it would not apply to the shoes I selected. No clear explanation was given, and the policy seemed inconsistent and unclear. During the checkout process, instead of focusing on my transaction, the assistant manager carried on a casual conversation with the security guard, who was eating popcorn at the time. They openly discussed other customers in the store, which I found highly inappropriate and unprofessional. This was not only poor service--it was unacceptable behavior for someone in a management role. As the first and primary representative customers encounter, the assistant manager set a negative tone for the entire experience. If this is the standard of customer service that Famous Footwear accepts from its leadership at Tanger Mall, I will not be returning and cannot recommend this store to others. I strongly urge corporate leadership to review both the professionalism of the store's management and the clarity of its military discount policy. Maddy Ferguson (in the Alexandria store) was AMAZING! She spend about 2 hours with me and my sister. We came away with wonderful, comfortable shoes and orthotics that worked brilliantly. She was so insightful and even picked out a pair, very different from the styles we had chosen, that my sister LOVED! In addition, I now know my shoe size, width and arch height. I am trying to walk more (after hip replacements) and I feel very confident in the support I get from these shoes. Also, the manager, Brian Hall, made a brilliant choice to get Maddy to help us. The tops and bottoms don't always match, even when they have the same color and off the same rack as if they are supposed to go together. This has happened with many blacks that have. I have 7 black sweatpants and 5 black sweatshirts and almost none of them match. The service is on point and their discounts are usually really good. Date I say the best on the east coast but it could be that I just happen to have more access so I see the 40% days more than I do at the other locations. I've actually never seen anything higher than 20% at the other 7 east coast locations I've been to. None-the-less, the colors need to match better.
