This Thanksgiving, in lieu of frying a couple of turkeys like I do every year due to some medical restrictions on lifting and twisting, I ordered a whole smoked turkey from City Barbeque. I ordered it chilled for pickup the day before, and we popped it in the fridge. It was ready for an easy pickup exactly at the time slot I had set when ordering. The day of, we followed the instructions supplied via QR code and heated the turkey in the oven between 2-2.5 hours. It was outstanding. We fed 6 people and had a ton of leftovers. Unfortunately I did not get a picture of the cooked bird, but I got a picture of the box ;-) Everyone loved the turkey and I may just have a new go to for an easier holiday, without needing to stand out in the weather to fry them myself. This is probably our last visit to City Bbq. We have been going to this location since they opened and the Greenwood location even longer. We ordered the City Sampler. Normally we take some food home with us. On this visit we ate it all and left wanting more, just not more of any of the meat. The portions were definitely smaller. Three slices of brisket and turkey. The brisket was so tough I had to get a knife to cut it. It was dry and had no flavor. The pork was dry. And the turkey was salty. My husband said the sausage was good. It was the best meat on the plate. I didn't eat any of it. Fries, hush puppies and Texas toast were fine. Service was good. This is a little different since it is like a fast food joint but with decent seating area like a full restaurant. When we stopped in it was right after Indy had a big snow storm and then super cold snap. This place looks really cool with the high ceilings and windows but the hvac couldnt keep up with the cold. Kinda funny being inside with coats on chowing down on some BBQ. You order up front and come around the side to get sauces, silverwear and drinks. The food was pretty good and had a decent stream of customers in and out which always is a good sign it is liked. locally. Those hushpuppies were different than i have had before. Crispy and a little sweet but tender inside. I finished them up days later and they were still super good! What meat i had left i put all in my beans for a later meal with the puppies! I frequent the IUPUI location and today was very disappointed. My to go order was a chicken breast and a wing and a piece of chocolate cake. I don't know what pieces of meat I got but it was not a chicken breast and the wing was only the flat part. If I didn't live wayyyyy across town I would have definitely taken it back because it was not edible it was dry and hard I'm guessing it was supposed to be a boneless chicken breast. Needless to say CITY BBQ DO BETTER!!!! and if you order to go at this location check your order before you leave!! This was definitely a waste of $16.33!!! Picked this place "randomly" when I wanted to grab BBQ while waiting to go to Indianapolis airport. The randomness was wanting BBQ and a place close to where I was that had decent reviews on Yelp. Man it was a great choice! The food is so good! I'm used to paying a lot for BBQ and getting some good and some bad results. I got the Judges plate. $40 for ribs/brisket/chicken/pulled pork/2 sides. I'm used to places where this would be barely enough (im a big eater), and when I got the tray I was shocked. A good value! So much food, really could easily feed two people, possibly even 4 (especially if one or more people were kids). The only issue I had with the food is the brisket was a touch dry...but that's really on me (there was so much food that it took me awhile to get to it). I ate in the restaurant. Lots of sauce choices, soda, etc. very clean, real silverware, and a fairly standard country soundtrack. This is my first visit to this location. I regularly visit the South Indy location just north of Greenwood. I stopped in for lunch today. Today was Rib Bone Tuesday. Their rib bones purchased by the bone are sold at a discount off of the regular price. I ordered four bones with coleslaw and green beans. The green beans are outstanding. Italian beans with bacon and onions, slow cooked to make them soft. Absolutely the bomb! The coleslaw was good and creamy but not too soupy; just right. But I screwed up on the bones. I forgot to help myself to the BBQ sauces and ate the bones "dry." While still good to eat that way even though a tad salty on some bites, I would have preferred if my failing memory had remembered to help myself to the BBQ sauce bar. I don't know where my mind was during lunch. I did learn about their app today and that you get $5 off just for downloading it so I did. Points are doubled on Mondays. I also visited the restroom. Kudos for having automatic dispensers for paper towels and hand soap. The funny sayings signs were interesting and funny. Worth a trip just to read them. read more

I am a huge city barbecue fan. Smoked meat is hard to find. Their flavor is always satisfying! Don't underestimate their smoked turkey. It has a very nice flavor and is not dry. One of the options they have is to order their meat by the pound. We do this often and make our own sandwiches at home. Carryout for this is a great option. They will include their barbecue sauce with that. Our favorite sauce is the sweet and the original. Download their app and you can earn points for five dollars off. Order them as they open or around 6pm. That's their sweet spot for good BBQ. Between 1pm and 5 you get scraps that just aren't up to bbq level. I've done this now over a dozen time, it's pretty consistent unfortunately they have a dead zone for cooking. But aside from what I just said, the food is good, the brisket is almost always juicy and the sausages always come out top notch. My only real complaint is their toast is never consistent. Some are grilled nicely and some are like just kissed and under done. The taste between how they were made is night and day so you never know which one they are going to give you. read more

This was my first time at this location in Indy, I was a little worried because the parking lot wasn't that full but it could've been the time of day and also the day we came. Damon was great! He helped us pick the best items from the menu and was very friendly and easy to talk to. He definitely had a flow that wasn't rushed within all his tables. The ambiance was very chill, wasn't too busy but even the crowd in wasn't too loud and the music was at a reasonable volume. I love City Barbecue. I really do! It's casual, it's spacious, it's a bit southern...I like it. I order almost the same thing every time: Pulled Pork, a medley of their BBQ sauces, hush puppies, salad with vinaigrette, and a half and half sweet tea. It's heavenly. Are there better BBQ restaurants around? Sure. Are they more expensive and not quite as quick for a solo lunch? Yep. I like that I can pop in and get all of these things in one meal and for a reasonable price. Also, exceptionally consistent - I've had this meal at different locations and years apart and I don't think it's ever been anything less than great. The Mac and cheese was undercooked and the hush puppies were fried to the point of being burnt. The meat was ok. Pulled pork was a bit dry. Texas toast was a thick piece of bread with some grilling on the edges. The frozen Texas toast you get at the grocery store is better. We have never tried this place before, but they are preferred caterers for our wedding venue, so we decided to give them a shot. First, the service here is one of the best I've had. They don't have servers, but everyone from the ordering counter, to employees just walking by, to noticing the ice was low, to the GM Rieley... I was amazed. We told Rieley that we are considering them for catering and right then and there he had basically a consultation meeting with us!! He showed us how they set up, let us try some meats, and gave the contact info to the catering manager, Ashlee. We have already been in contact and are choosing you all! As for food, I am in love with this place. Their brisket was cooked PERFECTLY. They have several different bbq sauces to choose from, that really gives a different flavor with each meat. For sides, we had green beans, mac and cheese, potato salad, corn pudding, cole slaw, and baked beans with brisket. ALL of their sides are to die for. This will be my regular BBQ place from now on. The collards were like putting a spoon full of salt in your mouth. Took them back up and got their coleslaw, which was good. Now for the pulled pork: the wifeswas mostly fat, no meat. Mine was all pork little fat, but the pork has no Barbeque favor at all. If you ate a bite of the ends it had some smoke taste. Their BBQ sauces were terrible. Visited the Castleton location tonight to support a fundraiser for my kids school. I spent $114 on crap. The brisket is usually sliced. We were given crumbly pieces. In a word: Disappointing. I got the pick 3 meats. Three small rib bones, pulled pork and brisket weighed in at less than 12 ounces (including bones & burnt pieces) plus 2 sides for $30 plus tax. I ordered at 5:30 pm for pick up on the way home. It, of course, was not piping hot as one would expect when dining in, but the freshness was abysmal, obviously, having been held for a long time. All meats were uniformly dry and had little smoke flavor. The brisket was 2 half slices plus a couple of "burnt ends," but these were acrid tasting and extremely tough and dry. One bite was enough. The pork didn't taste much different than an oven pork roast. The ribs were better, but again, little smoke flavor. None had any flavor of their rub and the BBQ sauce supplied was a small cup like what one gets for fast food nuggets. I had to use my own sauce to make the meat palatable. The baked beans were good and the greens were okay with a few shots of vinegar added. All together this was not worth the money. You'll get far better BBQ ribs buying the fully cooked shrink wrapped ribs from the grocery heated in your own oven. My memories of City Barbecue were good but with the years, quality has dropped tremendously. read more

I have had the pleasure of going to City Barbeque twice now thanks to a supplier visit I have right in that area. Our suppliers take us here every time and I can truly see why. Having had BBQ all over the states, I can confidently say that City Barbeque is among the top. For my most recent visit, I got the two meat combo which featured a choice of sides and a hearty slice (or slab) of Texas toast. For the meats, I chose sausage and brisket. The sausage was done just right, being snappy upon cutting yet still releasing juices as you bit into it. The brisket was done just the way I like it: with a good amount of fat and crisp bark to balance it all out. All meats were extremely moist. The meats definitely do not need it, but City does have an impressive array of BBQ sauce to choose from - some of which pack a punch even for spice lovers like me. The stellar collard greens and buttery toast were a nice complement to the meat. Just make sure you top your meal off with some sweet tea for the complete package! I cannot wait to visit these suppliers again so we get just one more taste of City Barbeque! read more

We had stellar service here 9/16 at lunch. It's been awhile since we had been to this location where we had been going almost weekly. It just fell out of rotation, but was the perfect choice for my aunt's birthday lunch. There were 6 of us and we got the Motherload. It's always plenty of food and has something for everyone! We walked in at 1 and ordered right away. Our food came out quickly and our meat was all cooked perfectly. We have picky people and I did all corn pudding since that is the favorite. And one greens for good measure. Service was excellent. The staff went above and beyond to check on us during our meal.
