I spend plenty of time on the road, but typically in big brand hotels or Airbnbs. This place is definitely doing something different. A genuinely "boutique hotel", it looks like a low-end motel with a high-end remodel. There is a paid parking area (not gated) or you can park for free across the street. There was no front desk and you just get some codes for the elevator which leads to an outside platform and then for the door to the actual room. One space in the garage is used to offer filtered water, and my room had a refrigerator but no microwave.
Stylistically, the room was appealing, and it had excellent temperature control (important in a swamp). This isn't the touristy historic part of Charleston, but North Charleston is an area where you can walk to some nice food options, including the cafe next door which they have some relationship with and offer coupons for (and which I gave five stars to some years ago). It also comes from the Weltons, whose more downtown bakery I have also been to numerous times. The location in North Charleston also allows easy access to Mount Pleasant as well as the city, and it's a good driving location for all sorts of local destinations.
The basic model; nice avante garde rooms, minimalist on everything else, was something I wasn't sure about but it worked for me. Some issues; dodgy wifi in my room, the lack of any kind of cooking or laundry facilities places limitations on what you can do. They completely ban outside guests. But I approve of the enterprise and even though I have places I like to stay in Charleston I would definitely look here again. read more
