On a recent trip south, we booked a room to stay at the Econo Lodge in Walterboro, SC. We decided…read moreto give one of the more budget-conscious Choice Hotel options a try. It turned out to be an excellent decision. We were pretty worn out after nearly nine hours on the road. The initial check-in experience was quick and efficient. The room itself was large and exceptionally clean. Our bathroom was oversized, so comparing it for a general review wouldn't help most guests. However, the bathroom was modernized and clean. Each amenity on the list was in the room: fridge, microwave, etc. Again, everything was clean and neat. The only room improvement to note would be the provided seating. It wasn't the most comfortable chair I've sat in. In a room with a king bed, it might be helpful to add more comfortable seating for two, possibly a love seat sofa. The first thing we noticed when pulling into this Econo Lodge parking lot was the spectacular array of flowers, planters, and hanging baskets. Clearly, the owners take extra care to enhance and maintain the visual appearance of their business. Very pretty! There was no advertising that this location offered an extensive hot breakfast, but the small eating area and items provided were sufficient and, like the room, clean. Of note, this is not a fancy, "high-priced" overnight accommodation. If you're looking for a lot of overpriced bells and whistles, you might be disappointed. However, if you want a budget-friendly, exceptionally clean place to lay your head for a night or two, you will not be disappointed at the Econo Lodge in Walterboro, SC. I would 100% stay there again!

Hotel staff basically insinuated I was lying, even after seeing the insects in person. Manager was never available to address my concerns and refund my charges despite 3 attempts at speaking with him.

It's not good for large groups as it is setup conversation style with couches, club chairs, and a small bar. Perfect place for a night cap after dinner. There were a lots of bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. They boast about their butler service, which is pretty unique in the United States (akin to the resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean). We only stayed one night and did not make the most out of it. Our butler was very pleasant and offered detailed recommendations regarding restaurants in the area. The staff is welcoming and friendly. We arrived early and had to wait a few hours until our room was ready. That was a slight nuisance as it was a cold and rainy October weekend in Charleston. Luckily they had plenty of umbrellas for us to use. The welcome cocktails were a nice touch when we were finally able to check-in. Other nice touches include the complimentary drinks, candies and snacks that were already waiting in the room. The turndown service also included chocolate and a small sweet alcoholic drink / shot. Lastly, the included room service breakfast in the morning elevates the stay. A lot of good things. However, I thought the rooms themselves were just okay and a bit dated. Our friends stayed at a boutique hotel with vaulted ceilings and its own kitchenette for less money. Another disappointment was that we booked a room with a small outdoor courtyard, but were given a regular room. Given the weather, we probably wouldn't have used the outdoor space at all, but it would be good to get what you paid for. Overall very good service and location. They have a nice bar by the lobby that we did not make use of. The rooms themselves are just okay and on the small size. I would probably stay somewhere else next time I visit Charleston, even though I have nothing bad to say about The Spectator. Maybe my expectations were too high with a 4.8 / 5 average Yelp score. I just think there's better value elsewhere.

The toilet had dirty hairs on it and the icing on the cake was that the toilet didn't even flush. It had some sort of issue because it acted like it was going to overflow. Water right up to the tippy top of the toilet bowl. I think this is a known issue because it has a sign behind the toilet to let them know if there is issues with the toilet flush. I let the front desk know. But it just seemed like too Many things were wrong here. There was mismatched paint, and broken pieces of furniture. Nothing that alone would ruin my stay but it was all of them all together that left me with a sour taste and feeling uncomfortable. The door had a wide crack where you could see outside and it was loud and cold air was coming right through. I was honestly a little worried about our car outside over night and that made me uneasy. Not the best area. Skip this town and this hotel.

I was lying in bed after 10:00 p.m. listening to hotel guests talking and the floor bumps and rumble and the squealing of kids with loud adult voices. During the night, facing the convenience store / gas station I was awakened at 3:15 a.m. by the bang of a dumpster being slammed down, then the angry beeping of the truck. The area has a passenger train line close enough that you can hear the blast of the train horns. In the next hour or so, two passenger trains are blowing their horns at a crossing. It took me a couple of hours to get back to sleep. The hotel staff does slide the bill under your door (or tries to) and that is an annoyance that we can live without if we have email / text message options. The breakfast was good and standard stuff, egg and cheese omelet, biscuits and gravy, pancake machine and sweet pastries. Bring your earplugs and don't expect a great night's sleep.
