    Scallop pakora!
    Briony C.

I'd never knowingly been to Cambuslang before so that was an adventure in itself - until my iPhone decided we needed to go for a drive around the backstreets even though Cinnamon is on the main road. So apologies for my fellow Pakora Passporters for being late, I did give Siri a serious scalding about that! Cinnamon is a pleasant enough restaurant without any real wow-factor - clean, well presented tables and a comfortable space. Also I suggest that they fix the lock on the ladies toilet as it seemed unreliable at best! Having a quick look over the menu I was initially confused by the pre theatre option but thankfully I had Martin to set me right - it is simply a choice of starter and main, then you pick your side. (I initially read it as getting all the starters listed which really made me excited). At the bargain price of £9.95 I probably should have been able to work that out on my own. I went for the scallop pakora and a chicken korma for my main, with a coriander and mint naan. I was really impressed with the options available for the pre theatre, it was pretty much choose whatever you want. I think it was only the scallops that attracted a supplement but for an extra £3 they were worth it. These are almost on-par with the best pakora I've had so far, a really light and fresh batter with chopped pieces of scallop inside mixed with what I think was potato. Absolutely delicious and a nice change from the usual chicken and vegetable options. I also liked my main but to be honest, I wasn't feeling the best that day and was totally full from the pakora already, which was a shame. What I ate I thought was nice although maybe slightly too coconutty for me (and I love coconut), but I was trying to avoid dishes with cream in them. The naan was really generous and I liked the unusual herb flavour combination. Staff were super friendly and attentive. The only downside was that the food took quite a while to arrive - I can't remember exactly how long but there was that definite moment of realising you've been waiting some time. Would I travel back to Cambuslang just to go here? No, probably not. But it is a real gem and has delicious scallop pakora so I'd visit if I was in the area.

I would never have thought to head out to Cambuslang for a curry, nor expect anything decent.

We ordered a drink from a very friendly chatty waitress who and within 5 minutes or so they arrived i had a pint of Kingfisher which went down very well. We were informed the buffet was ready for us and made great haste to it, the starter selection was good, the usual favourites where all there and i liked the Chilli Chicken which was bang on spice wise and and they even had chips and pizza on the buffet ( most places i go to will charge extra for chips nice touch i thought). The starters done we headed for the mains again a good selection and some authentic veggy versions which my mate loved, i kept being called back to the buffet by the South Indian Garlic Chilli Chicken.mmmm Nobody had any room left for the sweets which is a shame as the chocolate fountain looked inviting. The restaurant itself appears to have new owners since the last time i was in and they had two parties down the bottom with a singer on a stage with star lighting etc which seemed to be going down a storm,we were informed entertainment was a regular thing on friday /saturday nights. Overall a good meal and a restaurant singer you could listen to , its well worth seeking this place out and dont let the location put you off its a hidden gem behind The County Inn off Dukes Rd.

Inside it's a bit grotty and dated as well.....artex ceiling, Ikea candle holders, peeling wallpaper etc. But the food and the staff instantly make up for all this - this is a stonking good value for money all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant, the food is good - the curries are full-on, not watered down like you get in a lot of Indian buffets, and outdoes a lot of the overpriced and underwhelming places in the centre of town. They do an extensive takeaway menu as well - not that I've tried it. All the staff are fantastic too - if only the place looked a bit better!!!

However, behind the slightly crass exterior lurks a genuinely enjoyable Indian restaurant which my boyfriend (who lives nearby)raves about. What makes the Pearl of India so enjoyable is the way the staff makes you feel like a valuable regular, even if this is your first visit. The level of attention given to customers can be slightly overwhelming at times. After briefly hinting that he was thinking of going to the restaurant for Christmas dinner, my boyfriend's dad found himself harranged by three members of staff, a diary book and a selection of Christmas menus for a good twenty minutes, before having to ask them (politely) to leave him alone. Perhaps he should have expected it really - he was probably the only person to query having Christmas dinner here (what about turkey & all the trimmings?!) As far as the food goes, it has quite simply the one of the finest chicken pakora in Glasgow and that alone is worth the trip! Yum yum.

We had that usual "I don't know, what do you want?" back and forth before I suggested getting what we've coined "an Indian pick 'n' mix"... A selection of dishes so we can try loads of things and pick at them instead of having a heavy curry. Tonight we ordered a set meal of chicken chasni, pilau rice and popadoms with spiced onions to share. We also got a couple of different pakoras (fish and chicken) and a portion of chips, cheese and chicken tikka because it sounded intriguing. Hubby opted for some Peshawari naan because he is crazy for it and says it feels like he's getting a dessert! Yes, yes, I know that is a mega feast. Don't judge us. The Good - those intriguing chips, cheese and chicken tikka were soooo good. Ultimate comfort food and exactly what I needed. Those fluffy chips, sharp cheese and delicious mild chicken tikka chunks worked like a massive cuddle and I was so happy we ordered them. The Bad - Fish pakora. It looked like frozen chunks of fish and the batter didn't even coat the entire pieces. It was overcooked and chewy with no flavour. I had one piece and gave up. The Average - The chicken chasni had lovely flavours and was on the hotter side of medium but it had hardly any chicken in it and came across as a little stingey. The vegetable pakora was nice. Not great. Not bad. Just some nice vegetable pakora. The Peshawari naan was super sweet. This isn't my favourite dish because I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but the actual naan bread tastes pretty good and wasn't overly doughy. Overall our food was a bit hit and miss. I'd been recommended Chanda Cottage by a couple of people for the next time we fancied having a little buffet for dinner, but it's not convinced me to change from our usual place. I can't guarantee I won't be back for those chips though when I need a good comfort food hug though.

It's clear that the focus of the restaurant is that it should still be a fun pub atmosphere that just happens to serve Indian food. So, looking in from the outside, you wouldn't know that it was an Indian restaurant. But when you walk in and smell it, you'll know. Portions were a little small so expect that you'd need to get a few things to get a full meal out of it. But they are appropriately priced for the portion size. They serve food here tapas-style and I believe you are still meant to share them so the idea is that you get a lot of dishes and eat as you drink copious amounts of beer. The one thing that made this place stand out was their service. It was amazing! During my meal, their card machines broke down and, as a result, I didn't have a way to pay for my food. The manager then comes up to me and says, "It's our fault. Don't worry about it." To be clear, this is only something I'd see in small-town America but never in a major city. So I was surprised that in Scotland's largest city, they were so trusting. (Really earning their reputation as the friendliest city in the UK). I was so touched that I promised I'd return to pay for my meal. I even kept my receipt so they'd know what to charge me. I came back the next morning, paid my bill, and, even though it's not required at all in the UK, I left a big tip as a thank you for trusting me and being so accommodating. When I come back to Glasgow, I will definitely come back.
