Another one off the list! As always I have wanted to try it for ageeeees and finally on Sunday I got to sample the food delights of RK. It's a very laid back feel, more cafe or even like being in your friends kitchen for a meal rather than full on restaurant, but I really liked it. The staff were friendly, the portions were huge and the prices were so cheap. My full meal only cost me 11 quid! The food is all vegan or vegetarian friendly and for me that was a major plus as I think Indian food with all the spices and sauces involved if done right really lends it's self well to a veggie only diet. Hopefully you can see from my pictures what a feast was on offer for 11 pounds. We shared lovely paneer pakora and then I had to myself a silver tray full of mixed delights. There was two curries, a yogurt dip, salad, roti's and spicy pickles. The food tasted brilliant and I would happily go back any time. Nearly forgot! For dessert I had super tasty hot dough balls with ice cream. Awesome! The only slight negative off the night was at times the service was so slow and being honest a bit rude. At one point a waitress was actually pretending to sleep against a coffee machine instead of serving us! On many days this could have brought a three star review, but I have focused on the great quality food instead and will stick with 4 stars.

Interesting use of naked brick as a design feature.

I have lived in the vicinity of this restaurant for some time. Passed by every day on my bike. Looked longingly at through bus windows. But it took me forever to finally get there!! This restaurant's cuisine is punjabi, from a region of India where the food is primarily vegetable based (they have the odd meaty dishes as specials, but not when I've been in), so it is a vegetarian's dream... and there are plenty of vegan options too! Now, Ranjit's Kitchen is a small, family run restaurant. So seating is at a premium! Luckily as we went for lunch on a Sunday, we were the first people there. All of the recipes are mama Ranjit's recipes, and mama Ranjit is in the back cooking them up for you (she is a very talented lady) while her son takes care of things out front. The feel of the place is homely and a little bit jazzy without trying too hard. When working on the décor, they worked with the exposed brickwork, hanging fairy lights and placing little plants at intervals along the walls. I get the feel of being in someone's groovy dining room. I'm an oddity in that I don't much drink liquids while I eat... but I just can't resist having a lassi, especially a mango one! It's like a milkshake if it were made with natural yoghurt instead of ice cream. Tasty stuff, but pretty filling so you don't want to drink all of it before your food arrives! The paneer pakora is simply divine! The paneer is marinated and before being battered in gram flour, a wonderful filling made of tamarind, red onion and ginger. The homemade chutney that comes with it contains carrot, tamarind and mint. I am actually salivating even thinking about it. The sweet channa with paneer (can you tell I have a thing for paneer?) is also an amazing treat; chickpeas and paneer in a sweet and spicy sauce... and when coupled with a lovely, warm parantha it is the ultimate comfort food. And let us not forget dessert! I love Indian sweets, and have done as long as I can remember finding out there were Indian sweet shops near my home. But my absolute favourite, which isn't very common, is gajrela. A sweet, warm carrot almost-pudding with almonds and pistachios... the closest comparison is with carrot cake, but I find it much better. It's one of those Indian desserts that is mostly home made, and few restaurants seem to carry it on their menu. So imagine my absolute delight when I first saw it on the menu in Ranjit's Kitchen! Ranjit's gajrela is among the best I've tasted, and served warm alongside a scoop of ice cream. Heaven. If you haven't been in, stop thinking about it and GO! You won't be sorry.

Sabji of the day - this one was a delicious potato and aubergine.

I'd heard that Ranjit's was fantastic, and had been really keen to try it for ages. I was NOT disappointed! This place is a wee gem. As it's a family run place, I wasn't sure what to expect, but it has clearly been very professionally thought out, and seemed very well-run. The seating is communal, at large tables, and although we had our own table for this visit, I thought it might actually be quite nice to have a chat with the other diners, as they looked like interesting people. The decor is simple, and very stylish. The food is excellent. It's freshly made daily, and is nice and simple, made with traditional ingredients, so you can be reassured that you're not going to get any mad red food colouring or anything like that. I was very pleased with the choice I had for vegan eating. The waitress explained very clearly to me what had cheese or butter in it, and she knew exactly what she was talking about. Vegans - all the channa has cheese in it - just so you know. I opted for the Sabji of the day, which is their daily fresh vegetable curry. This one was potato and aubergine, and it was delicious. It came with 2 roti, and was very filling. For £3.95, this is outstanding value. This would have done me nicely really, but as it was my first visit, I wanted to eat everything, so also had some samosa. Oh my, best samosa ever! The pasty was light and crisp, not greasy at all, and the filling was fluffy and delicious. The tamarind chutney for dipping was also just right, not too spicy, not too tangy, just right for adding a little something extra to the samosa. It's non licensed, and they sell a good range of soft drinks, lassis, and mostly fruit based drinks such as guava or passion fruit. I had a coconut water which was an ideal accompaniment for my meal. I didn't have a sweet this time (no room, not even in my pudding stomach!) but I'd like to next time - the Snowflake Gulab Jamun looked most inviting. We noticed a sign advising that Ranjit's can do catering, or bulk orders, and it did cross my mind that I could probably buy £20 worth of sabji or daal to take home with me, and it would keep me fed for a week. Worth exploring, definitely. I'll definitely be venturing south-side to Ranjit's Kitchen again.

Sabji of the day with roti

Really really great. Having read other reviews, and having had enjoyed the Pakistani Café that resided on these premises a few years back, the missus and I decided to give it a whirl for lunch. Ranjit's Special Pakora was shared, and was flavoursome and fluffy light; not your usual Glasgow pakora! We also ordered the daily specials of Daal (black chickpea today) and Sabji (veggie mince and peas in gravy). These took a good wee while longer, but were worth the wait. Both were good sized portions and each came with two hot roti. The sabji was earthy and comforting, whilst the daal was more of a hot and spicy hug. The mango lassee was also very good; not as thick as store-bought bottled stuff, so you could actually drink it! Staff were friendly and attentive, just a missed point for crockery and cutlery not always being taken away before we seated ourselves or when we were done with dishes. Minor niggles easily ironed out. Considering giving a bonus point for getting to watch some of their Punjabi dessert stuffs being prepped on one of the other tables... Glasgow has a few places where two can have lunch for around fifteen quid; but not many of these leave you full and knowing that you will be back. Will definitely introduce some pals to this place and spread the good word. Glasgow needs more informal, affordable but tasty lunch joints!

What an excellent addition to the south side! We were going to a friend's birthday and decided to stop in here for a quick bite to eat first. At 7pm on a Friday it was pretty busy and with a communal dining set up you'll need to be prepared to sit at a table with some new pals (they do takeaway as well). The decor inside is casual and yet it's way nicer than just eating in a takeaway shop so you can properly relax and enjoy your meal. There's table service and you can just pay for your meal when you're leaving. We ordered the thali to share as well as some paneer pakora. The thali has the daal of the day, the sabji of the day (vegetable curry), yoghurt, salad, 2 roti, pickle & chutney. The pakora is served with a side of chutney. They both arrived around the same time and we dove right in. I loved the pakora - I've never had paneer pakora before but this was lush - soft and spongy and perfectly crispy on the outside. And paneer is made on the premises too which is pretty awesome! The chutney it was served with was delicious. I loved the thali - the daal had beans through it and a very strong flavour of spice which I still can't put my finger on. Everything is veggie (in case you hadn't worked that out already!) and really flavoursome. The thali and pakora were a good sized meal for two if you're looking for a lighter meal - I wasn't super hungry so you'd probably want to add in another dish or two. With three soft drinks, the bill came to a whopping £16 (not a typo) which is one of the cheapest dinners I can remember having recently. Topped off with super friendly service, this place is already a favourite of mine. I can't wait to go back. Notes: Closed Monday and they close at 8pm every other day which might be earlier than you expect. They have quite a few sweets if you're so inclined as well as snacks to take away. They don't serve alcohol.

    The menu changes daily.

Me to other half: "Fancy dinner out?" Other half to me: "What about that Punjabi place on Pollokshaws Road where that doomed afghani place used to be, next to the First Minister's place?" Me: (silence) In 1698, several valiant Scots set out to create a colony of their own. The Darien Scheme was meant to create a New Caledonia in Panama. But it failed. Twice, ending in death, hanging, bankruptcy and, some would argue, Scotland having to join the Union. That bit of Pollokshaws Road has, till late, been Darien. Two restaurants in short order, established and failed. Hence the silence on my part. Will this place follow suit? It should not. This is a small, family-run business, into its second week of operation. The premise is simple: good, home-cooked food, with a menu that changes daily along with some staples. And it delivers. The decor is understated. Wooden tables with benches create the feel of a Punjabi dhabba, the roadside stalls that dot the highways of Northern India, where freshly cooked fare is always available. This is much more upmarket though and spotless. We had the dhal of the day and the 'sabzi' (read vegetable dish) of the day. Each comes with two Punjabi rotis (hand-made, soft, light and moreish - clearly cooked on a tawa, as it should be). The dhal was savoury and flavoursome, the addition of soya giving it an interesting 'meat but not meat' texture. The sabzi was unctuous: carrots, peas and potatoes melding nicely. The mango lassi was, again, fresh and not the thick, overly sweet gloop you get from a bottle. Water comes in a jug with two Indian metal glasses without asking for it. As did a little tart lime pickle. The welcome is truly that. They are pleased to see you, they are keen that you enjoy it and they want you to come back. At less than £5 per head for some fresh, wholesome vegetarian fare and that contented vacuousness in the head that says all the blood from your brain is now in the gut, digesting away happily, it is a steal. So 'happy' is good enough for me. But if I then receive a small sample of their sweets to take away and try ("have it with your tea" was the urging), I may progress to that rare state of 'very happy'. I am there now. Please excuse me while I dwell in it. Ranjit's Kitchen is not licensed. And there is no meat. If that stops you going, that is your loss.

Fantastic value for money (all the standard dishes are under a fiver), fantastic tasty and fresh Punjabi food and very, very friendly service. The side dishes are as good as the mains - incredibly good mint and coriander chutney and mixed pickles with home made yoghurt Put it all together and you've got something pretty special, I'll be back here as soon as I possibly can.

We visited Ranjit's on the South Side during National Curry week with fellow yelper Alison and what a delight it was. It's not a big place but you know what, sometimes the best places never are! Ranjit's feels sort of 'homely' and you get the feeling that you're just in an extension to the kitchen as you can see all the action going on behind the counter. Nice long tables mean you can just as easily be sat with your friends as you can with complete strangers - not everyone's cup of tea but good for meeting new folk! The food is excellent and all freshly prepared as you wait and it's all vegetarian although they do make vegan friendly options too. I chose the Punjab Thali which included a bowl of the Daal of the day, Sabji of the day, yoghurts, salad, rotis & chutneys - all delicious. The menu is on their website so take a peek at the other delights on offer. We have some decent curry options here in the west end so it was nice to try somewhere new and I really hope this fab place does well - it deserves too so get yourself over there and give it a whirl...

Tasty lunch, sadly didn't live up to the hype. We arrived in time for opening as the restaurant doesn't take bookings- there wasn't much need in the and as we were the only customers for about 45 minutes. Despite this the service was sloth-like... Friendly staff but extremely slow. Staff were really helpful with the menu and served out dishes like a starter, main course and dessert (the menu isn't split into courses), the waitress also made sure we were aware of drinks options suitable for the younger members of our party. We had the paneer pakora which were super yummy - the batter was delicious and the tangy sauce was the best bit. Next we had Panjabi tea for two- tamarind chutney, minty yoghurty sauce, pakora and samosas with tea and sweets to follow. The pakora was no more than standard- really unremarkable. The potatoey samosas were yummy and the tamarind chutney (the same sauce from the starter) was fantastic. For our "main" we had the dahl of the day which was soya chunks. Really not to my taste texture wise, the sauce wasn't anything to shout about either from my point of view. The two accompanying roti were gorgeous though! The sweets were varying in yumminess- a fudge like confection that tasted like condensed milk was fabulous. Other than that I could take or leave the rest of the selection. The tea wasn't great either for my palate- like chai but not as strong a flavour. I wanted to love Ranjit's kitchen, I'm sad it didn't live up to my expectation. The decor is absolutely beautiful- very like a Wes Anderson movie- and the cantina seating arrangements are cute and quirky. Unfortunately, the food wasn't my cup of tea and I probably won't rush back.

    Pals dinner at Ranjit's Kitchen

Amazing authentic family prepared Indian food. Being a well seasoned carnivore I was a tad concerned about going to a veg only restaurant. Those concerns were quickly dashed when I tasted the samosas. Utterly delicious. Following this we were brought out an array of different Indian dishes that were all super tasty and spiced to perfection. For a great value insight in to authentic Indian food look no further than Ranjit's kitchen. Only one point I'd make is that they don't serve alcohol and there's no BYOB. I understand why this is the case but as a customer I'd love to have a cold beer with the spicy food.

This may not be my closest Indian takeaway and restaurant but it is by far the best and I love…read moretheir 'My place or yous' plastic bags. He, he. I know I should have grown out of finding this amusing some time ago, but alas. Anyhoo, the restaurant it's self is a good side yet still manages to be very cosy, homey and ultra comfortable. The chairs are heavy, well cushioned and more than a little difficult to manoeuvre over the REALLY thick carpet. The lighting is nice a subdued, there' s inoffensive and fairly quiet Indian background music and - me and the boy's personal favourite bit of decor - some big massive tropical fish tanks separating the small takeaway waiting area and the main restaurant. The restaurant is always very well staffed with friendly and non-intrusive individuals. I reckon, this is due to its dual status as a takeaway so they can man the phones etc without causing delays in the restaurant area. Now for the food. Oh, the food. It's always well cooked and spiced just the right amount. Though, beware the spiced onions, they are deceptively spicy and very good. These are brought to you free of charge while you wait on your starters. Yum. The meat is always fresh and tasty, with the lamb often being my top choice. The portions are massive, especially the side order of garlic nan bread. It really was a platter. This is amazing, though it does mean you'll probably have to share once everyone else witnesses it's glory. Tut tut. As for the beverages there's a great selection and at fairly good prices too, but I'd recommend the good old bottled Cobra. Furthermore, if you can't be bothered making yourself presentable enough to sit in you can always takeaway by either collection or delivery. No excuse.
