Lol you would think someone touring a little lake for a living would be happy go lucky, not crotchety!! Cash only BTW.

Three and one half stars but rounding up because of the nice nature views and decent narration…read more A lot of the covered sections of the 3pm last train of the day were already sold out so we went with the open air car. I'll let you know that if it rains on your trip and you're in the open air car, you'll be getting wet and we did in both directions. Not butt wet, but your lap if uncovered will be pretty soaked. The hour long ride was nice and leisurely and although the narrator hyped up a waterfall, it didn't live up to it. He also gave some history and talked about an old hotel that used to be along the line before being burned down. There was an old oil line that now holds fiber optic lines, the rock "tunnel" and some other named curves along the way. The diesel locomotive pulled one direction and pushed the other the way back. On the open air cars, you sit sideways family style on comfortable wooden benches. The car needed some TLC if you looked hard enough but was fine. We did not walk through the standard or first class cars, the snack car, or the caboose. The bars across where the windows would have been were almost reminiscent of jail cells. In the short sections of the ride when it wasn't raining the fresh breeze was quite refreshing. This ride would have been awesome at the right time of the Fall during the changing of the leaves. I bet they raise the prices then. The train offers numerous different themed rides so the experience can a bit different each time if you want to ride more often. For our open air car today, $25 each. So, $100. First Class was $54 each which also got you a "free" drink and snack. I'm sure those seats were more comfortable than the wooden benches. Something fun to do while in Jim Thorpe for the experience.

It's something to do with others, I presume going in the fall when the leaves are changing colors would be spectacular. They say it's similar to the Swiss Alps, I am not sure since I have never been there. It reminded me of traveling through the mountainous countryside in Japan. As for which train car, if the weather is good I recommend the open air ones without glass windows. The views are the best and you are not pounded with sunlight since there is a top and plenty of trees to protect you.

I looooove this campground! I've been here a few times with friends over the past few years. This…read morepast weekend we had one of my favorite camp sites. I woke up to the most beautiful view. The skies were blue, surrounded by green as far as the eye can see, birds were chirping and the warm sun beaming. The campground is beautifully maintained, everyone is very respectful of other campers. The sites are far enough away from one another that it really feels like a camping trip. It's also close enough that I can walk over to the next site to visit a friend. All the sites come with a small cabin. It's very basic but it's sufficient if you chose not to tent camp or if you bring kids or dogs and prefer to stay inside. I woke up to bunnies running all over the campsite. What a view and what an experience! A friend camping near the water spotted a baby brown bear! If you're looking for a fun camping experience with friends, family, your partner or just by yourself I would highly recommend this place! The views are amazing, the locations is clean and well kept, there's firewood that can be purchased on site, it's a quick 90 minute drive if you're coming over from Philadelphia.

We stayed at the Creekside campsite and definitely want to return. We had an absolutely fantastic and serene time on their property. I was very excited to get to see a Black Bear up somewhat close, which also can be scary if you aren't expecting it, but the owners let you know and it seems fairly common there. At dark, we also saw three chirping otters floating down the river together... very adorable. It is way more wild than other campsites, so of course leave your food and cooler in your car. Definitely BE CAREFUL when using the suspension bridge as it slants a bit and can get wet! Firewood will be under a tarp next to some crates along the beginning of the main camp road.

Best skiing and snowboarding spot for beginners!…read more I was nervous about skiing, given I could barely remember doing anything last time I went. I assured myself by buying lessons this time around, with a 1 Day Lift Pass and Rental add on ($167). This costed only $30 more than without lessons, so it's a good deal to me for a 2 hour group class! The website kind of markets you into buying ahead of time to save $5 but you can actually buy a lot later and still save $5. Also, if you buy too in advanced, you have to pay a $5 shipping cost for them to ship the passes to you. Getting there and starting lessons was seamless. They do tell you to come 1 hour in advance, but that's because the process of finding your rental gear can take a bit. I highly recommend entering your rental info online, as they were able to easily retrieve my stuff. The staff were so efficient and friendly! I swear everywhere outside NYC is so much more mannerly and genuine. Rental gear came with skis, helmet, boots, and poles. My instructor, Peter, was awesome and so patient! Even though we were a group, he still gave individual feedback as we took turns sliding down making wedges and turning. At the end of the lesson, we went down the Green Hill (I think it was Frosty) with our newfound knowledge. There were plenty of beginner Green Hills to learn from. Shoutout to the amazing staff for handling the ski lift lines. I even felt brave enough to tackle the Blue Hill by the end, which was scary steep at first but progressively gets less intimidating. Thanks to Jack Frost, I feel fully confident in taking a stab at snowboarding next time around.

With little experience in skiing / snowboarding, we found this ski mountain had good number of…read moretrails compared to other more popular mountains in PA. There were a few beginner trails which were not as crowded as other mountains. Two of my kids went to the black trails and they said the trail was very short even though the difficulty level was up. The thing I did not like was that the lounge was at the top of the mountain instead of at the bottom, so basically I was unable to video or picture my kids snowboarding at all. We went on weekends and during the holiday week, but two of the lifts were not in operation. The line for the lift got a bit longer during the peak time. The group lesson seemed very crowded and the teacher / student ratio seemed high. Good to know that their tickets could be used at Big Boulder, so you could basically ski in two different mountains for the price of one ticket! The cost of the food was way over charged. I would recommend to go during weekdays if possible because it was crowded on weekends.

For 2 of us, paid $30 total for one night for a tent site (tent sites are in the strip of land across the road from the main office). The tent site was much better than I thought. 1. only 3 parties there in a very large area reserved for tent only camping, we were very spread out and it was pretty peaceful 2. camp site right next to a beautiful creek! 3. had electric outlets and tap faucet right next to the tent site. We didn't bring anything that could be plugged into an outlet but thinking in the future I could be sitting in a hammock and watching a movie on my laptop while being charged 4. camp site didn't have a fire pit or an obvious hole in the ground where you make your fire safely but we were out climbing very late and too tired to make a fire anyways when we got back. Lots of fallen branches you can collect to make a fire. The other 2 parties had built fires, didn't see how they did it. 5. the shower house closest to the main offices had large showers which were in decent level of cleanliness, paper towels kept running out though so bring your own Overall, very happy with this campground and will definitely come back in the future! A couple of things I noticed (1) the area where RV's are parked looked pretty crowded and also loud (2) I don't think I saw anyone else wearing masks around the campground, even when a lot of people were going in and out of the office. The 2 of us may be the only ones wearing masks there, when going into the office and using the bathroom

Since then there have been a lot of changes under the management of the new owners!!! The new owners have done a terrific job updating and cleaning up the property in just a short 6 months. That's just the beginning of what they have in store for upcoming seasons. It has been so much fun meeting new people who have been so kind and friendly!! We've had numerous gatherings at the main pavilion with live music, food, games and hay rides!!! 4th of July weekend they put on a fireworks display and at Halloween a Trunk or Treat for the kids!!! Update Time: A brief Internet search will tell you that PA has got a crap ton of tourist train rides that you can take. Pandemics aside, under normal conditions there are 8 or 9 operating lines east of the Susquehanna which is a hell of lot more per capita than you'll find pretty much anywhere else in the country. You've got everything from a national park operation funded by the NPS in Scranton to the Strasburg Rail Road which is sort of the gold standard of the tourist railroad experience and many others in between. With that said, if you're looking for what small time single line branch line railroading was like a century ago, this is it right here in Kempton. While I don't get out here nearly as often I did at one point, the beauty of coming here is that literally nothing ever changes. You're riding on the same rails that people's grandparents and great grandparents would have taken to go from a few of the small neighboring farming towns along the line to Slatington High School or for a few of the commodities the were shipped out by rail such as cement or potatoes. The operation at the WK&S is pretty simple. Basically they run every Sunday from May through the beginning of November with a few event weekends thrown in like the obvious festivities around Christmas. Departure times are almost always on the hour between 1pm-4pm and the typical consist will be one of their diesel-electric engines, a coach, their open car and a caboose. The round trip from Kempton to Wanamaker and takes about 40 minutes to go the 6 miles. Two of the big perks here are that they are dog friendly and that your ticket allows you to ride all day, so if you i.e. show up this Sunday for the 2pm departure you can ride the 2, 3 and 4 for one price. That stuff doesn't apply for the Christmas trips but it's good for the bulk of their rides all season long. Sure, over the years the railroad has had a few problems such as an embezzlement issue: www.mcall.com/news/mc-xpm-2014-05-07-mc-pennsylvania-money-stolen-from-hawk-mountain-tr-20140507-story.html I also have the distinction of being on what is probably the only train in their 50+ year history that hit a car. It happened 10+ years ago at Trexler crossing (the only real crossing on the line where traffic is a possibility) and afterward everyone on the train had to walk the short remaining distance back to the station. www.mcall.com/news/mc-xpm-2009-09-07-4437179-story.html Overall the price is very economical and the scenery with Hawk Mountain, the orchard, the creek, the track side house with the horses are all unique. Sure Kempton is in the middle of nowhere but trip out there is worth it to get a completely authentic experience unchanged by time.
