    Entering the weird zone

Honestly, I just don't know what to say about this place. Our whole experience was so bizarre from start to finish. First, It is so so beautiful up there! our campsite was amazing, it was completely isolated, down a small hill from the road in a leveled-out partially shady area, and Backed right up to the smaller beautiful stream. There was just nothing around us but forest, brush and water, so lovely. When we first got there or dog started freaking out about something in the brush and barking and running around like crazy! We lost him for a minute as he went chasing but we could never see what it was. So we assumed it was a small woodland creature of some sort. About 100 yards away was the mouth to the larger stream which you can actually canoe and swim in. We took several long beautiful hikes and explored all around / the hiking there was really beautiful. The isolation is also nice, not like a state park where your campsite is 15 yards from somebody else. We could not even see other campers and so we were able to draw water from the stream, warm it on our campfire, take all our clothes off and have makeshift hot showers right in our campsite- that's how private it was. However if you hike (or canoe) up to the small aqueduct at the top of the stream you can meet other campers. we did meet a nice couple and made arrangements to share a campfire with them later that night. I'm only telling you this small detail because it was part of the bizarre-ness of the whole trip. So On to that part: First, making all of the arrangements was bizarre, I never spoke with anyone in person, rather we exchanged lengthy text messages, or I should say she sent me lengthy text messages detailing the rules of the place, which included how immaculately clean you must leave your campsite including even picking up a small scraps of leftover firewood down to the last piece of bark. There was also a very big deal made out of not putting nails or stakes into any of the trees (although I don't know why we would've wanted to do that). There were rules about when and how to put money into this weird mailbox to pay for this day and to pay for firewood, rules about how to remove your trash and exactly where to put it. But whatever, that still would've been OK. The bizarreness sort of started when, after making arrangements for the trip, we're all packed up with our dog and driving to the location and we don't know what campsite we're at. She had told us just to text when we got close and she would let us know but as we drew closer and closer and sent messages saying we were basically on site and we did not hear back from her. We had to pull over and wait about 45 minutes just to get a message back letting us know where our site was. OK still nothing too weird. The first night there was a terrific storm with lots of rain and wind and we get a text from her saying that she was driving through the grounds making sure everyone was OK and had seen something in our campsite that she wanted to talk about. Even though our campsite, as I mentioned, felt so private. And even though it was night and dark and as I said a terrible storm! But she was apparently driving through the grounds checking everything out. So we started to feel like we were being watched. The next weird thing was after we had met the other couple and made arrangements to share a meal that night, we got a text from Jill saying that she knew that we had met them and were going to be eating together and how happy she was that we were making friends (or something like that). That was weird but OK whatever, maybe she just likes to know what's going on on her land! But then when the night arrives and we go to meet them they are gone: moved out from their cabin and completely left the grounds, not even a trace of them. I think it was at this point that we started to joke about being in some kind of teenage slasher movie. I mean, we were mostly joking but we did start looking for video cameras hidden up in the trees and on the grounds. And I've tell you: we got up very early to leave the morning we left. it wasn't even quite light and there was a mist hanging in the air, just beautiful. we got packed up, got in the car with our faithful dog and started down the road toward the entrance to leave. And what do we see? About 10 yards down the road from us there was a gigantic black bear and her cubs. So I can only assume that a cub is what we barely caught sight of in the brush near our campsite the first morning we were there. So yeah: basically, in addition to legitimately at one point feeling like we were in some sort of bizarre movie, coupled with almost being mauled by a bear protecting her cubs - The whole thing was so bizarre and we just didn't know what to make of it that it's actually taken me two years to write this review! I'm not a suspicious person but I just didn't want to open myself up to any Bizaro forces that might be up there in the Poconos.

Love love love this place. I came here last year and I will be going again in about one week. The place has changed in one year and now you need to pay up front over the phone to confirm your reservation. It used to be different but the place I am sure has not changed a bit and is still amazing as it was before. I am guessing Jill had to change the reservation method because the honor system was not working because of dishonest patrons of her Resort. I love to come here only because its very secluded and you are far far away from anything ordinary. Far between campsites (which are only a few) so you never really see anyone else during your stay there, which I love. You really can become one with nature out here, come try it

Whitewater Challengers is very organized and they are constantly trying to maintain that organization, even on the water. From parking your vehicle; all the staff members directing you throughout the property, checking in with different color papers and boarding cards, and even on the bus ride back... it was very well organized. All guides are clearly knowledgable about the river and everyone had a great attitude; everyone really appreciated that. It's obvious the guides genuinely care about making this a great experience for their guests. Our group engaged with Jen and Rober. They had great personalities and clearly love what they do. If you are concerned about riding the river with children or with older family members then have no fear! The rapids were fun but I wish they were a little more rough/busy. Certainly not challenging for families with children; there was a younger Boy Scout group on our trip and they all handled it with ease. Go ahead and book that weekend river trip with the fam! My only complaints were the "hurry up and wait" of the whole journey. I understand we are traveling with a big group and we are trying to stay together but we stopped a total of 5-6 times including lunch. It felt like we only got about 15-20 mins of solid rafting then we had to wait 15-20mins for the rest of the group to catch up. Kind of annoying. And the claim that these are class 2-3 rapids may be factually true but I would consider these class 1 maybe class 2 on a great day. With the stopping and waiting and calm water for almost half the trip, I can see why some people may be disappointed. There were about 15-20 rafts in our group. Overall, this was a solid weekend activity and it deserves 5 stars. With all the organization and very friendly river guides it was a great day. The staff can clearly handle any group and they know the river like the back of their hand. Please take all the reviews into consideration and consider shortening the amount of stops on the river to corral the group; there's got to be another way that is also safe. Thanks, hope to return again soon!

What a disaster. I have gone twice with Girl Scouts and again with boy scouts. My first adventure…read morewith the girl scouts was generally enjoyable. Nothing notable to report but not overwhelmingly great either. The last time I went with the Boy Scouts was one of the worst weekends of my life. There was some river guide who named himself "zombie". He has the worst chip on this shoulder ever. First, he got nearly naked on the bus clearly wanting to show off all his tattoos. Inappropriate in front of a bunch of kids. If he was discreet then fine. He was showboating and it was gross. Then while on the river, I splashed with a paddle. It is indeed against the rules and I was wrong for that. However I knew I messed up the second I did it. A reminder would have been sufficient. Oh no. Zombie came over immediately and berated me loudly in front of everyone (including the kids). Yikes. I said "understood, I'm sorry". He then continued saying he was "gonna hike me out of 'his' trip" if he saw it again. What? He was going to evict me from the boat in the middle of nowhere and walk me home? Alone? What the hell is wrong with this guy? I don't care how capable or good of a river guide he is. If he's going to talk to customers who paid for the trip like garbage, then he doesn't belong there (especially around kids). Major jerk. Then we camped there overnight. Some camp site decided to have a rager party. Like thumping music turned up to full volume that could be heard for miles. No one came to quiet them down. At midnight I had to walk over myself and ask if they could please let us sleep. They said no and it kept going. I called the campsite phone # and got a voicemail. No one was there to help. Needless to say we didn't sleep at all. Just a generally unpleasant experience. You need to get rid of this zombie person. You can't call yourself "zombie" then demand to be taken seriously. Give me a break. You need someone who can patrol the campsite and keep order and the campers safe. Don't go here and waste your money.

For 2 of us, paid $30 total for one night for a tent site (tent sites are in the strip of land across the road from the main office). The tent site was much better than I thought. 1. only 3 parties there in a very large area reserved for tent only camping, we were very spread out and it was pretty peaceful 2. camp site right next to a beautiful creek! 3. had electric outlets and tap faucet right next to the tent site. We didn't bring anything that could be plugged into an outlet but thinking in the future I could be sitting in a hammock and watching a movie on my laptop while being charged 4. camp site didn't have a fire pit or an obvious hole in the ground where you make your fire safely but we were out climbing very late and too tired to make a fire anyways when we got back. Lots of fallen branches you can collect to make a fire. The other 2 parties had built fires, didn't see how they did it. 5. the shower house closest to the main offices had large showers which were in decent level of cleanliness, paper towels kept running out though so bring your own Overall, very happy with this campground and will definitely come back in the future! A couple of things I noticed (1) the area where RV's are parked looked pretty crowded and also loud (2) I don't think I saw anyone else wearing masks around the campground, even when a lot of people were going in and out of the office. The 2 of us may be the only ones wearing masks there, when going into the office and using the bathroom

There are usually events through the weekends to keep everyone entertained. The grounds are also close to the Trexler Nature Preserve and the Appalachian Trail for some good hiking. The only negative: Took one star off because we've noticed that they built up tent pads and gravel "driveways" for the tent sites and smaller vehicle sites. It doesn't give much leeway how you can set up your site. The tent pads are also rock hard and very unforgiving on tent stakes.
