The jalapeño ranch dressing is still amazing, but ordered a taco salad tonight and was surprised when it came to the table in a regular bowl with tortilla strips on top. Now, it has been a while since I have been there, but they used to be served in a fried tortilla bowl that was amazing! Now tortilla strips......come on! I mean the taco salad at Wendy's and many other fast food restaurants has those! I will give 3 stars because of the dressing and the steak in my salad still had good flavor, but even it had more gristle than it should! I will probably stick to some of the better local Mexican restaurants for the foreseeable future! read more

Thought I'd reviewed this in the past, but I don't see it now. Hadn't eaten here in quite awhile, until last night. Have usually had good dining experiences here, with a variety of entrees. Last night was different. There used to be a valet, not that I'd ever used it before, but I would have last night! It was like ten minutes of circling the restaurant before we were able to park! About 5-10 other cars circling (some would give up) as well. My husband had gone in while I attempted to park, so he managed to snag a table that I suppose was technically in the bar area. That whole room is normally filled with tables, but not this time. For some reason the floor was wide open and empty...??? So, that was odd, as people stood around needing a table. Service started off strong, but fairly quickly went downhill. The chips came quickly, plus our first round of drinks (ONLY round, as she then deserted us). The chips are the saving grace of this place. We all LOVE those thin, crispy chips, the seasoning on them, and the ranch, guacamole and salsa! In warmer months, the patio is a big draw as well. But, it was closed last night. Why not invest in some outdoor heaters? Lots of restaurants do that for this time of year. It's not freezing yet. Maybe they think it's good to have cars circling the lot, and people standing around waiting rather than seated and spending money? It's not. All three of our meals were lukewarm. Mine was cheese enchiladas. Let me tell you, I make enchiladas, and those weren't enchiladas. She asked what type of sauce I wanted on top...I asked for it on the side rather than On top since I wasn't sure about the spice level. So, what I got was 2 dry tortillas rolled around some cheese and nuked...cheese hardened where it oozed out of the ends. not even a lot of cheese...and lukewarm, so the cheese was just a glob. less than desirable. My sangria was tasty, but no actual fruit in it. Also, not for sure there was any alcohol in it, and I think it was pretty small. But, maybe that's just because she never came around to get me another one, and she didn't give us water. So, obviously this dining experience wasn't even a 3, but WE LOVE THE CHIPS and for that alone I give it three stars. read more

Was a bit skeptical when we arrived because the seating host was a young long haired guy that seemed to want to be ANYWHERE but there. The place was PACKED and there was a 45 minute wait. There were places on the covered patio with no wait so we decided to eat outside. The margaritas on the rocks were OUTSTANDING!!! The food was EXCELLENT. Our waiter was great. The only problem was once we got our food, the flies were EVERYWHERE. HUNDREDS of them!! This is of No fault of the restaurant obviously, but I think it would be wise to screen in the outdoor area. Eh, this place just isn't great. I've witnessed waiters running around like a chicken with their heads cut off. And the cardinal rule of any restaurant, never let the glass get empty whether it's a water, a beer...... or a mixed drink. Waiter was oblivious to empty water glasses or beer bottles. The food is okay. Your locally owned Mexican restaurant, little mom and pop style place will have better food. I don't know why I don't bump down a notch and give it just two stars. Likely my favorite Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant in Cool Springs and regular weekend dinner hangout. For this trip, we arrived before 5:00 pm on Friday night to avoid the typical large crowds and wait. We were seated immediately and served promptly. I know that I cannot resist their chips (best when warm) with creamy jalapeno and fresh salsa. The creamy jalapeno, in particular, is addictive, while thd salsa is very fresh and with a bite! Two of my favorite dishes are the Southwestern Enchilada with blue tortilla, hand-pulled chicken, and fried egg, along with the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo. But countering the "donut effect" I went with the dieter's special, Tortilla Soup (bowl), which is delicious and filling. My wife loves the "Big As Yo' Face" oven roasted chicken burrito. Altogether, a great dining experience, with delicious food, filling, reasonable prices, and great service. Happy eating... read more

Let's image you made Spanish rice, put it in the 'frig Wednesday. Then the following Wednesday reheated it in the microwave... It would likely be better than theirs. I feel like I'm giving 3 stars a lot lately. Am I just becoming a bitter, jaded reviewer? I don't think so...but, I guess that's for you to decide. Let me start by saying that Chuy's has a lot of things going for it: *Good Location *Cool ambiance *Enthusiastic Employees *Great Service *Lots of food choices *Huge Portions *Good Chips and Salsa However, with all that said - there was nothing mind blowing about this place. There is a lot of hype that surrounds Chuy's. And, the food is decent. However, it's not great. It all seems a bit safe. I've expressed my opinion to others and they claim that maybe I just don't like tex-mex stuff. I don't think that is it. It's not BAD food - just not GREAT food. But, when you are going to a chain restaurant typically the food is inoffensive and borderline bland (for the most part). Do I like Chuy's? Yeah, it's alright. Do I crave Chuy's? No. Would I go back to Chuy's? Sure - if someone wanted to go I would go. However, it likely wouldn't be on my recommendation. My last trip I had their version of a Chimichanga with the Jalapeno dip or whatever. It was ok - but there was too much breading around the meat - felt like I had to go forever before I got to the meat. And, I've had much better Chimi's elsewhere (El Sombrero and Las Palmas to name a couple). But, the portion was large, the food was hot and the server was fairly attentive. I think Chuy's is a 'jack-of-all-trades' type place. It's all pretty good - but none of it is exceptional. Which is why I gave it 3 stars I guess. I went out of my way to go to Chuy's for 2 reasons: 1. Every time I drove around the place there was a line outside and parking lot packed. 2. A few close friends of mine said they love it, its the very best, they're from Austin Texas and thats where the place started and it was good. So, i did it. I broke down and went to a chain restaurant. I just HAD to try it. It was around 7pm on a weekday. Couldn't find a place to park. Once I got in there were plenty of open tables so not sure what all the parking fuss was about. I informed my server it was my first time, and wanted the very best of what Chuy's is known for. He said, "everything is good." The food came out fast, but was dripping over the plate. We got very little salsa with our chips and salsa and had to beg almost to get it refilled. There was absolutely nothing unique or interesting about the place. Its got some "fake" cool stuff on the walls like Applesbees but all corporately placed. Very very disappointed in everything about my experience. First thing, their salsa was something that they bought in bulk at at grocery store. Second thing is that the refried beans looks like something they get out of a can. My wife ordered a quesadella and there was hardly anything in it. My daughter order a quesadella as well and it looked disgusting. It looked like they put 4 pieces of kraft cheese in a tortilla and put it on the stove. I want to complain to Mexico about this joke. What Tex Mex? Playing US music in a restaurant themed heavily as Mexican qualifies as fusion? Crap. As a vegetarian, this place was severely lacking, with barely one dish in each section, as an afterthought, converted to vegetarian. The menu itself is sparse. I have seen much cheaper Mexican joints offer reams and reams of comestibles. I guess when you prepare your food this fresh (as advertised), there are only so many dishes you can make. I was upset that they didn't have Huevos Rancheros to jump start my Sat afternoon. The Chile Rollenos were so average, I could have gone to Publix, eaten a chili and ate some flour and drank hot oil instead. Meh! The free chips was oily. SO it must have been fresh, but the taste was barely better than Pine Sol. I guess you are getting the drift here. Not some place I would go again, even if this is the first joint outside Texas that Chuy's decided to open. It's our Family's favorite. However, they have implemented a rule of not seating you unless the whole party is there. I don't like the rule at all, but understand it completely. BUT, when it is in between lunch and dinner and NO one is coming in - a business needs to be able to accommodate. Your staff needs to understand why a policy was created and then give your employees the flexibility to make exceptions. Poor management and training. read more

What is the deal with this place? I feel like there is a really hilarious joke that I'm not getting when someone mentions how awesome Chuy's is. It's ok. However, it's not "park around the corner at Sperry's (while ignoring the signs to not park there if you are eating at Chuy's)" good. The food is average. For the price, I expect a bit more. I prefer 'dirty' Mexican to this style anyway. There are some excellent Mexican restaurants around Franklin. Go there instead. If you want to go somewhere nice, then go somewhere nice. However, going to a Mexican style restaurant to pay more and wait to be seated is crazy. I think I'm the only person in Franklin that isn't in love with this place. However, the food is bland, you do generally have to wait to be seated, and there is never a place to park. There are so many good choices in Cool Springs to eat. This is not one of them. read more

The Austin, Texas based chain restaurant of Tex-Mex food is located in the Mecca of all things chain restaurant: Cool Springs. Seriously, if you have ever seen the movie "The Birds" and been like "My God, that's a lot of birds and they are crazy and violent," then you have spent an evening waiting to eat at Chuy's. Your reaction begins with the same amount of awe: "My God, that's a lot of suburbanites and folks from southern Tennessee/northern Alabama traveling into Cool Springs. I never knew there were that many of those groups." Then your emotions begin to shift to fear similarly as in the movie: "Wait, those lines and that cramped parking (with lots all around with signs that specifically call out 'No Chuy's parking') are for Chuy's. I might not get a seat. What if there are no tables? What if I starve? What if my children/spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend starves first? Dear God, I must hurry!" The crowd begins to grow larger and larger; everyone is experiencing the same anxiety. Bad things could happen at any moment. Fear, angst, terror... it's exactly like a Hitchcock movie. When you are finally seated, you hope it will all subside. So, hours (days? years?) pass and you are finally seated. Or, if you are lucky, then you were one of the larger and more clever "birds" and found a place at the bar. Anyhow, the menu is OK. The food is OK. The salsa is ah-maz-ing. The chips are OK. I think you will find the food part on par with what you would expect out of a chain restaurant. I think you will find the salsa above average to exceptional. Pains me to write this, but I give up on this place. I'm from Austin and while Chuy's was never great Tex-Mex (even on Barton Springs Rd), it was certainly better than any other option in Nashville. So we were excited when this was opened, albeit under new corporate owners. Initially, as long as you managed to avoid the crowds the food was pretty close to what you received in Austin - so I was a happy boy. I can still drink creamy jalapeno dip from the bowl. I'm sure this is still a good place to drink and the free taco bar during happy hour probably makes it a pretty good deal. But outside of that, this has really turned up the chain restaurant quality dial. The food is really, really blah at this point. Last couple of times it's just there. Tex-Mex is not elegant - it's scoop, scoop, splat - but it's pretty unappealing looking on the plate. The enchiladas & burritos had always been my go-tos and they're just not very good. The chicken is unseasoned and bland, the cheese is greasy instead of creamy. Even my favorite green chile sauce is now just spice, not flavor. The last 3 times I've visited I was not really satisfied with the food - my last visit this Sunday (the restaurant wasn't busy - I know to avoid the rushes) wasn't gross, the service was fine, the prices are a bit high but we knew that -- it just isn't at all special. read more

Fast, hot, and delicious. Service is pleasant. But I give it the 3 stars b/c it's SOOOO busy. I know that's not their fault, but I'm looking out from the customer's perspective. It's a popular place. If it's Sunday and you come during dinner, I can't promise you that you're gonna say "I'm so glad I waited an hour and a half for this meal." If it was a one-of-kind type restaurant, then I would definitely say that it's worth the wait... but it's not. This place is pretty good! Nice Tex-Mex kind of food going on here! They have wonderful clash, loud, eclectic, colorful decor inside that will keep you busy trying to figure out what everything is! In the bar area they have pictures of dogs everywhere! Its great! I recommend getting the Elvis Presley Memorial Plate. This plate has all your normal tex mex favorites. Large portions also, so you wont leave hungry. Here is a fun fact for ya! Very disappointing visit to Chuys in Franklin TN tonight. We went for my sons birthday. Arrived at 4:15 to a half empty restaurant- seated apx 4:50. Waitress was rushed and clearly pressured but was fairly attentive. Over an hour after ordering when I asked about our food she told me it was done and sitting on the counter but she wasn't allowed to touch it. Manager had to. I asked to talk to the manager as I could also see it in the kitchen window. Manager (Jeff) came over said he was sorry but he had to "go back and cook our food". When I said she told us it had been sitting in the window he said that was not correct (she was standing behind him). He said he'd work to get our kids food out as soon as he could and he would be back after the food was out (we never saw Jeff again). Miraculously the food came out within about 5 mins - my food cold, others at the table luke warm at best. Our waitress didn't bring my wife's soup as she said she knew it would be cold so had them remake it. I sent mine back and didn't eat. 2:30+ after we arrived we left and won't return to this Chuys again. I can take slow service, even barely warm food but having a manager lie to my face and throw a waitress working hard under the bus is not acceptable. Before we left we made sure the GM heard the story. Lots of other places to eat. Pass on this one. read more

I remember when I first saw the people working on the Chuy's building - it was strange to see somethign so colorful among Cool Springs' standard red brick / white sign stores. But there it was. Bright colors, flash, different. Since then I've gone to Chuy's on a number of different locations, and yet I've stuck to only a few really really good plates. The Steak Burrito is quite good, *if* you can handle its spiciness. The good news is that you can request for it to be less spicy, but part of what makes it so good are the spices... so why would you? The Fajitas are also quite great - the only major downside is I wish they'd come with just one extra tortilla. The nachos, refried beans, and rice are all worth it too. The drinks are also really good. The margheritas are tasty, and if you like Sangria I'd definitely recommend giving theirs a shot. The patio is great in the spring/summer/fall. It's the one thing that Cool Springs is really missing, and Chuy's has hit that nail on the head. read more

i have to say.. i am a HUGE FAN of CHUY's.. of all things Chuy's that is. When I heard that there was a Chuy's in Cool Springs and Murfreesboro (while living in Houston and Austin which both have many Chuy's locations) i was ecstatic. What's not to love, cheap GOOD tasting Margaritas in all kinds of flavors plus yummy Texas Martinis (basically a margarita on that's not frozen or on ice). Their queso is awesome and they have a jalapeno dip that is sorta like spicy ranch dressing to dip your tortilla chips in.. SO GOOD!... being a vegetarian i love their been and cheese burrito which is as big as your face and enough food for 2-3 meals, their cheese quesadillas with onions/peppers inside or you can get it without, and their nachos are really good too! I am so excited for the West End/Midtown Nashville location at 19th and Broadway coming this summer! it's going to be packed all the time I betcha. So gald some awesome Texas Tex-Mex finally made it's way to Nashville (and they have awesome prices too)! read more

Obviously the first few reviewers have no idea what Chuy's is all about!! (Must have been written by their competitors). Chuy's is an Austin legend!! It is not a big chain, less than 20 locations, all of which are in TX. I eat there several times per week and it is by far the best Mexican restaurant in the Nashville area. I eat there often with my vegetarian friends and they have many vegetarian selections. Where many "Mexican owned" restaurants use lard in their rice and refried beans, Chuy's are truly vegetarian. They have at least 4 sauces that are vegetarian and many entrees. Regarding the music, that is one of the things I LOVE about chuys--great music, scratch food, very fun atmosphere--My service has been AWESOME, every time! Everything on the menu is under $10 except for the fajitas, and they are only $11 and $21 for two. The portions are huge. They have the best fajitas-they marinade the skirt steak in Shiner Bock and spices and are soooo tender and flavorful. Now, let's talk Margaritas!! How many Mexican restaurant squeeze fresh lime juice for ALL their Margaritas--they do!! No Fluorescent green mixes used there. The frozen margaritas and Strawberry Margaritas are awesome and have plenty of liquor too. Chuy's also makes their salsa with fresh tomatoes many times throughout the day----Overall, Chuy's just EXUDES quality!! Chuy's also has a great kids menu and is kid friendly! They also have a nice, big Patio. A must try--get you some! -if you can get in. I go for an early or late lunch or dinner so the wait is minimal. ENJOY!! read more

When my 2 year old son with his limited vocabulary includes the word "Chuys" ... you know it has to be a fave. My wife and I love this place because it's about the only place we can take the kids (we have a 3 year old and a 2 year old) and we don't get dirty looks. We've been to 3 locations in the Greater Nashville areas and this by far is the best - and I believe was the first one here. I really can't find anything bad to say about it - although the service isn't 100% consistent when you're dealing with transition times...like 3 pm on a Saturday afternoon in the early Spring and it's warm enough that they open the patio but then all the newbie servers don't know the table numbers.... ...the key with a great Chuys is you have to go with the flow. This location is the hallmark for the area so if you love Chuys this is the location to visit. If you're there on a weekend here's what you ABSOLUTELY MUST ORDER!!!! 1) The Macho Burrito - A few years ago when DVDs mattered I bought the Desperado series and Robert Rodriguez has a short segment about his "Puerco Pibil" (slow roasted pork) recipe. To the amazement of many a guest in my home I have followed his recipe and many have walked away thinking I'm 50%+ mexican. It's that good. I have found equal or better in the pork that Chuys preps for the Macho Burrito on the weekends. It is absolutely amazing. Go on a late Saturday afternoon, and if you like spicy, order it with the Boom Boom sauce (NOT ON THE MENU) which is the hybrid of queso and hatch chile sauce. It will knock your socks off and you won't need to eat until Monday. 2) The Grandaddy's Brew - one of the first servers that ever worked there turned us on to this cocktail (NOT ON THE MENU) and there's a 50/50 chance that you'll have to explain it to the server because they won't have heard of it, in fact they'll think you're ordering the Grandma's Rockin' 'Rita (which ain't bad). If you have to explain it, it's a Chuy's Brew (frozen margarita with an 8 oz. Coronita upside down in it which is on the menu) with a side car of Grand Marnier - order this with the Macho Burrito. Please post all thank you's as comments on this review. Just make sure that if you order more than one, that you have sober ride home planned out. Now when I'm there during the week yes I get random orders of quesadillas and fish tacos and all are very tasty. We were in town for business and had time for dinner. I had never eaten at or even heard of chuy's before this. We were staying in Franklin but wanted to get out to Nashville, so we drove downtown and saw the Chuy's there and decided to give it a try but for a Monday night at about 8 the place was so packed I couldn't find a parking spot. My companion remembered seeing a Chuy's back in Franklin, so we headed back toward the hotel. The atmosphere is interesting, they took a new building and made the inside look like a run down mexican restaurant. Our waiter was attentive and professional, which was fine. I enjoyed the chips and salsa and I got a steak burrito and my companion got the fajitas.. both were good. Margarita's on the other hand, not good, very small, and expensive. We ordered the Patron margaritas at 8.95 each. Very tart and they were gone in about 3 sips. Now that I look back at it, Chuy's seems like a franchise restaurant that is trying to pretend it's not a franchise restaurant. However, like Chilies, Appleby's and the like, you know what you are going to get. I just wouldn't recommend the Margarita. read more

I decided to wait to review Chuy's until after I'd been here a few times. I don't think my opinion has changed much since my first visit. Let's just say, I like it and I would eat there again, but it's nothing earth shattering. The sauces they offer for several of their dishes certainly help and they are tasty, but is that just because it helps cover up how bland the rest of the dish is? I judge Mexican fare by how good their salsa and chips are sometimes. I would say Chuy's has good chips and salsa and their Creamy Jalapeno dip (which tastes like cool ranch Doritos to me) is a real winner. I could drink that stuff. The past two times I've been I have ordered the Chuychanga and I've been happy with my meal. Again, not a real game changer, just decent food and not gross. My husband got the Chicken Quesadillas from the appetizer menu and he said they were excellent. I forgot to try them myself. Oops! He also got a Sangria and said it was fantastic! The ambiance is a bit nuts and it's always SUPER DUPER crowded, but once you are at a table it's easy enough to carry on a conversation...even if at a little louder volume than you normally would. Overall I enjoy Chuy's, but I wouldn't say I would pick it over anything else in particular. Just a good option if someone else is making the decision where we go. read more

I must admit...I swore off Chuys when I moved to Nashville because I thought it was just another cheap chain restaurant with bad Tex Mex. BUT, I was wrong! Although it is a chain, Chuy's has some good Tex Mex... and house made tortillas! The overall atmosphere of this place is great. The brightly colored, mismatched interior is true to the Texas and New Mexico Border towns that inspired the cuisine. There's a variety of Mexican artwork and trinkets all over the walls. The food is pretty good. The meal comes with free chips and salsa, which is oh so good. I'm not a fan of the jalapeño ranch like most people though. I'd rather have it on a salad than as a dip for tortilla chips. The food is very reasonably priced. My wife and I ate dinner with drinks for less than $30, before tips. This place appears to be jam-packed all the time, so you expect the food to be good and the service to be amazing. Well, I would like to believe my friend and I came on a bad night, but I doubt it. Pappasito's easily trumps this place, as does Sal y Limon in Murfreesboro. The servers seemed stretched to the max and as a result much of our food came to us luke warm. For what I paid, I expected to food to taste amazing, and in all honesty, it did not. While I can go on a whole tirade of how Pappasitos outdoes this place, there is no Papasitos in Tennessee, but there is Sal y Limon, and compared to them, this place is a tex-mex wannabe. The food did not taste fresh, it tasted actually a lot like a well known fast food tex mex restaurant. Our server tried her best, but she seemed to be getting pulled in dozens of directions at once and as a result could not provide quality service to all her tables. I really wanted to like this place, honest. But in all seriousness it was a huge letdown. The final nail in the coffin were their cheese enchiladas that came with my combo plate. I felt like saying "Where's the Queso?!". Seriously, they were mostly dry and devoid of cheese. This place most certainly is not home of cheesy goodness. read more

I have eaten here countless times and it is consistently good. Most recent stop was peak dinner time on a Friday night and despite a lot of people waiting they were efficient and turned tables quickly for reasonable wait times. I highly recommend the rellenos! read more

Yum! Tonight was my second visit to Chuy's in Cool Springs and both times I've left the restaurant painfully full (my fault) and very content (their fault). I blame most of the wonderfulness on the boom boom enchiladas and the awesome chips and queso. And just when I thought I couldn't do any more damage to my diet, we fell prey to the sopapillas. They were worth every bit of discomfort I felt from overindulging. Also, I should mention the staff is great...attentive and friendly. read more
