4.5 Stars What a delightful find courtesy of Yelp yet again! We needed a place to grab a bite before bar crawling in the Tenderloin/Union Square area. After some research Chutney stood out as the clear winner. I decided to get the Chicken Jalfrezi special that night. Man, did it pack a punch of flavors. There was such a great deal of intricacies happening in my mouth that I didn't know what to make of what I was eating. All I knew was the heat was addicting, it was savory and made me want to go back for more. Everything is a la carte so make sure to order a side of rice or naan. I loved that they make each naan to order and even offer special options. In addition to that, the rice itself is great. There is a good amount of flavor to the rice without overwhelming and it was cooked well. Portion for both the rice and dish was quite good and easily satisfied my hungry. The tandoori chicken here was awesome. Buttery enough to be a guilty pleasure, but a pleasure none-the-less. The owner even offered to give me extra rice on the house. One thing that I will always remember is that after I left, the owner followed me out and asked if I had paid. I was confused since I paid with credit card and he apologized when I explained to him that I paid before I sat down. I guess most people pay after in cash. It all went downhill three years ago when the chef left :( For 9 years I ate the Bengan bharta and dreamed of it whenever I was away. Kamal was the chef. Three years ago, Kamal left to go drive for uber. I went back to chutney's a couple of weeks ago and was so sad to find that they had changed the bengan bharta recipe!!!! Apparently Kamal's method was too expensive. Kamal's recipe was a lot smoother, the spice somehow more subtle and yet also spicier. I've been searching everywhere on the web for Kamal's recipe. The food here is definitely a step up from naan-n-curry and I like that it's not as chocked full of large pieces of inedible spices that I have to spit out. Everything here tasted great. The naans were large and fluffy; the chicken tikka masala, well, I can dip bread in that sauce all day. The rice in the biriyani was el dente and they actually had a few large pieces of damn yummy lamb in there. The potato in the aloo ghobi was waxy and creamy and the cauliflower was tender but not too mushy. Next time, i'll probably do a takeout order. This is the place for inexpensive, fast, and excellent Indian food in San Francisco. Yes, it's in the Tenderloin, the neighborhood is a tad sketchy, but it's worth it. Try the benghun bharta, the palak aloo mehti, the tandoori chicken salad -- heck, try anything, it's all good. Chutney puts Naan n' Curry and Shalimar to shame -- once you've tried Chutney, you won't be able to return to those subpar establishments. And if you manage to run up a bill of more that $20 at Chutney, you'll be eating leftovers for a week. Perhaps it would have been better if I weren't sober. Having known some great Pakistani kababs in my day, I didn't sample any of the curries on my visit so I could focus on the meats. They were good, better than buffet-style Indian meats, but could have used more flavor and variety (would it kill them to add a bihari kabab?). The tamarind sauce was too watery, but the cilantro sauce helped liven up the meats. Seekh Kabab: Tasted a tad like meatloaf, could use more spices to balance out the strong beef taste. Chicken Seekh Kabab: This one was nice because the chicken was subtle and really carried the spices. Lamb Seekh Kabab: I'm a fan of ground lamb so was easy to impress on this one. As with the other minced meat kababs, the coriander seeds weren't pleasant when you unexpectedly chomp on them... could easily lose a filling! Tandoori Chicken: The highlight of my order. The outer edge (not skin, just meat) was full of spice and crispness. The inside was moist and juicy. Naan: Fresh and fluffy. Simple to make, but also simple to screw up if serving old naan. Holy snickerdoodles, it's Naan with *HUGE* chunks of garlic spread all over. I've not had anything like that before. Yum yum! The Tikka Masala was tasty tasty awesome. It's extremely saucy (SAUCY!) so I wound up taking advantage of the bread and rice far more than other restaurants with a similar dish. This is quite ok though cause the Tikka Masala sauce is tasty awesome in a dish. Service is done a bit weirdly here... you order at a counter and then sit down, with a waiter bringing your food out. The issue is you don't actually pay until you're done eating. Because of the way it's set up, it's pretty easy to not actually pay and walk out. It's definitely a bit odd and easy to forget that you didn't pay at the counter. Make sure you do though! Okay so mediocre, good at best. I was blown away when I ate here in 2010. I was unhappy with both my visits in 2014. It's just sad how the quality of food dropped. Almost like the chef forgot to love his job while he was doing it. The naan is soft and fantastic that gets 5 stars. But if you own an Indian restaurant then knowing naan is not called art at all. We are vegetarians so ordered some veg dishes, I am in US from past 12 years but never had a food like this. The food here reminded me of Delhi Wedding food. We ordered aloo gobhi, Paneer Tikka and Daal Tadka and all three were five thumbs up without a doubt. On the top, their Naan were soft, and perfect. Their Tea is amazing too. Quick fix for chicken tikka marsala and naan! I was craving indian after Go Cars and we came here. We ordered and the food came quickly. I'm used to chicken tikka marsala being too creamy but this was excellent! I love the onions, lemon, curry dipped with naan! Naan is huge and the garlic naan has a LOT of garlic and chives, so delicious! Be sure to bring your own napkin when going to use the restroom! It's really small and dirty. I can care less for the chicken... the sauce is so good. You can eat it with the naan or rice (which is also pretty good). I tried the lamb something... it came with huge chunks of lamb and potatoes in a creamy dark brown/green sauce. The menu said the sauce is spicy, but it isn't spicy. It was eh. The chicken skewers were really good. Although one part of the chicken was extremely burnt, the chicken was tender (Thank goodness because I HATE dry chicken).
