As mentioned in my initial review he is great, he is very invested in his job and wants everyone who visits the spa to have a wonderful experience. He was very concerned that my initial experience wasn't that way and offered me another chance to try the nail services on them as well as took care of my previous not so good one. I visited the Spa for my birthday in May. All was amazing -lunch, facial and massage. We were not offered Champagne though, which looks to read the norm. Nor did we see the Dream room. The reception is lacking, as is the spa. While there I heard ladies talk about their Groupons, so when I went home I researched and bought two. Mani/Pedi + Blow Dry. The Groupon appointment was easy to make, but check in was odd, and they were rude...as if a Groupon was not acceptable. This visit I was not shown the facilities, nor dream room (does it exist?), nor offered tea, coffee, or champagne - though other ladies were offered. They knew upon booking I had gels, but they did not add it to appointment. They do not do gel manicures, but they remove them - for $25. My express mani/predi was that, express...normally this will cost $145 at the spa without gel removal - I can't imagine paying that for such a short treatment, it was worth maybe $30. My nails are already chipping, a few hours later. My nail girl was not friendly, and I noticed that the other nail ladies were. They also offered their clients drinks and conversation. The blow dry was perfect though. She did an amazing job and made the trip worth it. What to do now with the other Groupon! read more

I am confused by the negative reviews the Chuan Spa has received. They kept me from visiting the spa for years. When I finally went, I found it to be a beautiful, clean facility, with terrific customer service. Diana was my esthetician, and she was awesome. I felt like I had a brand new face after my facial. Regarding cleanliness...I saw other guests leaving their trash on the tables and benches when there were multiple trash cans around...people just have no respect. Regardless, the trash was cleaned up quickly by spa staff. I wish that I had ignored the negative reviews and come here sooner. I guess there are some people who just can't be happy with anything. This is a lovely spa but watch out for the bait and switch. When I called to make my appointment, I asked for the half hour rejuvanation facial. Apparently, that facial is no longer available, even though it is on their website, so the gal on the phone booked me a laser treatment that was significantly more expensive. When I was brought back into the treatment room, I was surprised but assumed that I had read the description incorrectly. I never would have signed up for laser treatment. When I raised this with the receptionist, she said that she would have the manager call me (no call has been received) and gave me free passes to the spa. Beware when you book..... The best massage ever from Collette aka Coco. She was wonderful about applying pressure and checking in with me to see if it was too hard/too soft. I felt like putty in her hands! The waiting room for the massage was lackluster. How about some snacks/fruit? They did offer champagne which was a nice touch. My Groupon came with a mani/pedi service. If you're at the hotel and want a very overpriced massage, you might consider this spa, but if you're not at the hotel, I'd recommend trying a different spa. There is only one small sauna, which is fine, and one small steam room, with a temperature so hot I couldn't stand more than a few minutes (vs. a typical spa steam room, in which I'd be happy staying for 30 minutes). The towels are thin and a bit scratchy. There's one small jacuzzi, not very warm and not very inviting. There's no nice lounging space, although if you get a service, there is a wonderful "dream room" with individual water beds that are a great throw back relaxation experience. The services themselves are perfectly adequate but not outstanding, and the prices are crazy ($150 for a massage and $170 for a facial). To end on a positive note, the service is good! read more

This is my first experience going to a spa, so I was a bit unsure of what to expect. My wife and I have been talking about going and having a deep-tissue massage together for our anniversary! They are quite accomodating in scheduling our appointment and put us in a really nice couple's room. David and Vivian are great! They are very respectful and they always give us a "heads up" with the way they massage us so we know what to expect. They follow through with our specific request of where to focus on, in my case with my lower back area. The locker area, the spa and sauna/steam areas are all quite well maintained. If there's something to improve on, it would be the men's bathroom: for some reason, there's a funny smell, I assume, coming out of the drainage. According to my wife, it doesn't smell in the women's bathroom. But other than that, we have a very relaxing experience! read more

I find this spa interesting. For what could be a really nice luxurious spa they just miss the proverbial boat. When you get a massage they put down horrible folded up cases on your facial support which leaves you looking horrible after your massage. I have told them 5 times that it's annoying and uncomfortable and they don't care. Most high end spas have fitted covers so it is very comfortable while laying face down. Not this place. Also making an appointment is like trying to catch a rabbit. You call and call and can't get through. When you finally get someone and get your appointment, often the appointment is wrong. A gentleman helped me book a mani pedi appt and when I showed up they didn't have an appointment for me at all. We discussed the details and the time so I am unsure what he didn't do? But they accommodated me later. I left and came back but sort of expected an apology or gesture of good will for their error. I got neither at the front desk. I am going to give this place a couple more tries because the spa is pretty, but if you find simply making an appointment an aggravation, it's not worth it. I hope they figure things out. I want to continue going and maybe someone will change those massage face covers, too! ;) read more

I am a local Pasadena resident and my husband and I love the Langham. We spent the first night of our honeymoon in one of the Club Rooms and also had our 1 year anniversary dinner at the Royce. 5 stars all the way! This past Sunday I decided to try the Chuan Spa and indulge in a one hour Swedish massage. I was greeted cordially by the Receptionist and after the paperwork was filled out, she gave me a tour of the facilities and showed me to my locker. In the locker I found my spa shoes, towels and a big fluffy robe. I changed, took a quick shower (which was very clean and fully stocked with an abundance of towels) and headed to the jacuzzi/steam room/sauna area. I liked that there was citrus water readily available in the area and also a bowl of fruit. I first enjoyed the steam room and then the jacuzzi. As I sat in the jacuzzi, one of the staff noticed that the tip of my ponytail was getting wet, so she asked if I'd like a shower cap which I very much appreciated. The staff was always on point to make sure I had everything I needed. About 10 minutes before my massage, I headed to the waiting area. Passing down the hallway lit by candles, I found the waiting area which had a relaxing water wall and comfy chairs surrounded with white orchids and beautiful artwork. It was very relaxing and again, the staff passing by made sure to ask if I need any water, etc. My massage therapist then appeared and took me to a room. She explained everything thoroughly and asked the necessary questions (i.e., was there anything in particular I wanted to focus on, etc.) She was very professional. The massage itself was good. She asked me how the pressure was and checked how I was doing a few times during the massage which was just enough to allow me to relax, but still make sure I was comfortable. The hour flew by very fast (as it usually does during a massage), and afterwards, she asked if I wanted any tea, champagne or wine. I went back to the waiting area and she brought me a cup of tea and then wished me a nice afternoon. I was slightly disappointed because I was not offered to be taken to the dream room as I had read about in some of the other reviews. I am wondering why this was not offered to me, because I would have liked to have had the full experience. Regardless, I still rate this as 5 stars. The service at the Langham is always impeccable and I enjoyed the Chuan spa as well. I do plan on coming back to the spa to try out some of the other available services. read more

Chuan Spa is a wonderful place. My first experience was a bit ruff. My girlfriends and I made an appointment do get a mani/pedi together on a Saturday as part of our "girls day"... On our scheduled Saturday we received a call from the spa informing us that a gal called out sick and they could not accommodate the 3 of us. This presented a huge problem and we were all disappointed as we did a lot of scheduling and rescheduling to set this date. After speaking with several staff members I spoke to the Manager, De'Ante who was extremely kind and professional. He worked with me to find a solution and to make a unfortunate situation a success in the end. I am a long time patron of the Langham and even prior when it was the Ritz-Carlton. I was impressed by his attitude to go above and beyond in the situation and his willingness to make me whole and to make me feel as if I would want to continue to patronize this establishment. For me, as a consumer, more importantly than the quality of the "spa treatment" is the quality of how the business is run, the level of professionalism and the desire a establishment has to make its customers happy. I love this place it's very close to my house on the border of San Marino and pasadena . After I go to the spa I go have tea with my girlfriends . What an amazing experience I have had so far with The Chuan Spa. I have booked several massages for a group of friends/moms for this upcoming Mother's Day. I have been working closely with DeAnte Horton. From the moment I have been in contact with him he has given me outstanding customer service. He has responded to all my emails and phone calls in a timely manner. Being that we are going in on Mother's Day, which is a very busy day for the spa, we were only able to get 3 reservations at one time. DeAnte went above and beyond and was able to get someone to come in and work so all four of us could enjoy the facilities together before our massages. I have been in the customer service industry for over 13 years, being a sales manager in hotels and restaurants, my expectations are extremely high. I had a great facial from Isabel at this spa. I was happily surprised that valet services were free because I booked a service. I arrived early so I could enjoy the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. They also had a sleep room so you could lie down and rest that I didn't know about until I was leaving. The service staff (especially Mary) were very sweet and helpful. Unfortunately I wrapped my swim suit (yes I'm old fashioned ) in a towel and put it in my locker when I went for my facial but forgot to take it when I left. As I was leaving, Mary said she would take care of my towels so I'm sure she put them in the laundry after I left. When I called the front desk staff after I got home, they hadn't found it but said they would continue to look for it. They called back later that afternoon and said it still hadn't turned up but perhaps it would be found by the laundry in a few days. I called back a few days later and it still hadn't been located so I had to buy a new swim suit. It's put a damper on my experience there and since it could not have grown legs and walked away- it has to be somewhere?? I'm probably not going to come back as a result. read more

It's a night and day difference from BW. Since this was our first visit to Chuan Spa, the people at the Front Desk were very friendly and helpful. We were shown to our respective dressing areas. I enjoyed my massage, deep tissue, however it is very expensive for what it is. I was unimpressed with the size of the spa area (sauna, steam room and mini jacuzzi). The steam room could have used some eucalyptus oil. Employees were hard to find if you had a question. The staff was VERY nice and cordial. The amenities in the bathrooms were slim pickings, but over all it's a very relaxing place if you are willing to spend the money. I cannot see myself spending more than an hour there in addition to my massage. I wish it was a bigger place. read more

I just spent a day at the spa with a friend, it was my first visit to the spa but I had been to the hotel before. The grounds and building of course are just lovely and it always feels like you are stepping in to another time when you pull in the drive. The spa reception area is very nice, the desk staff was very friendly, the area smelled just like a spa should and I did browse the retail area and purchased a few items. The spa has all the things it should it is a little smaller than most for a hotel that size but I didn't find that a problem. The sauna, steam, and jacuzzi are all clean and comfortable. The individual shower areas are fairly large with a nice bench attached to the wall, the soaps and shampoos have a great smell, there are plenty of towels and waters, teas, fruit. I had a massage with Megan and she was fantastic, the massage table very comfortable and the room dimly lite, nice music. I really had a nice day, I gave 4 stars only because the spa is small but overall a very nice place that I would be happy to go back to. read more

I had a massage and facial a few weeks ago. The staff is very professional and friendly and my treatments were great, but I guess I was expecting more from such a high-end (and pricey) spa, especially since it's been recently renovated. First, I never got a tour of the facilities (even though I arrived 30 min before my appointment) and had to go around opening doors to find a relaxation room (the Dream room). Second, the sauna and steam room were small and not impressive at all. If you want tea, you have to find someone and ask them to get you some, as it's not just set out in the lounge area. Also, other than a comb, razors and some hairspray, there are no toiletries in the changing area. I don't know what brand of shampoo they had in the showers, but it was definitely a budget brand and something you'd expect from a low-end spa. Again, though the treatments were good, I feel like I've had better experiences at Burke Williams (and spent a lot less money). read more

Meh. Had a gift card and looked forward to a relaxing sensuous afternoon in upscale spa. Very disappointed. This refurbished spa is nothing to write home about. The small whirlpool is oddly located smack dab center-stage at the end of the corridor in the women's locker room. SPOTLIGHT! Why not put up a lovely screen to allow some privacy? The small steam room has a very loud plumbing....just as you start to relax your ears get blown out by the sound. There are NO lounging chairs. None. Hard wooden folding chairs around whirlpool (what? to watch the people in the whirlpool?) The space where you wait for your masseuse has semi-circular chairs with no arms facing a wall fountain.....which might be soothing but for the loud motor running the fountain. That coupled with the sounds of vacuuming and staff talking loudly from the service area did not make for quiet contemplation. The locker room is (overly) bright and the amenities are sparse; the only hairbrush I saw had someone's hair in it. There was fruit infused water and fresh fruit available. My deep tissue massage was OK; good attention to my back and shoulders but I think she pooped out after that as the rest of me (arms, legs, feet, hands, scalp) just got a regular massage. Check out the prices: very expensive. I think I'll go back to Burke Williams. I can hang there for hours and enjoy a little nap in their Quiet Room. *Wait! I had a great spa day at Chuan spa! I spent a lovely Sunday there with my girlfriend treating her for her birthday. We got massages, mani/pedi and enjoyed all the other amenities (gym, sauna, nice locker room, sleep room, etc). Our massage appointment was for 12 pm, and we arrived 15 minutes early and were accommodated right away. We were taken back to get ready for our massages, which were AWESOME! The masseuse was responsive to my instruction on pressure and used some really wonderfully scented oils and lotions. I was the most relaxed I think I've been all year! We rinsed off in the locker rooms and went on to our mani/pedi. The manager came in to check on our services at this time and was very concerned with our service and making sure that everything was up to par and comfortable for us. He offered us extra pillows and cold water during our nails. The nail artist did an extra massage on my feet which is always a plus! After we finished our nail appointment we just spent some time in the sleep room and sauna before heading out. Overall, this was a perfect spa day and I am already ready to come back for my next one!
