People who agree on a price and then discover forty new problems with the car once they're standing in your driveway. We tried CarMax instead. My daughter entered the car's information online and got a quote back immediately: $1,700. The same process booked us an appointment on the spot. No phone tag, no waiting for a callback. I assumed the number would shrink once someone actually looked at the car in person. I was bracing for the dealership version of a used car sale, the "well, once we take a closer look" routine. It never came. Our appointment was noon. Nobody spoke to us until 12:20, and only then because my daughter walked up to the desk and asked. That's the one place the system slowed down. Once we were in it, the same high-tech process picked up right where the online quote left off. Christian entered the car's information into the computer, and a buyer approved the $1,700 almost immediately. Not a negotiation. A confirmation. Twenty five minutes after sitting down, we walked out with a check for exactly the number we'd been quoted online. No haggling. No inspection surprises. No "let me talk to my manager." Just a kid's first car, 6 years and 180,000 miles later, turning into a check for the exact number a computer promised us before we ever left the house. If selling a car to them is that easy, that high-tech, that comfortable, I'm curious what buying one looks like. I had purchased the car only two years previously, from Majestic (when it was still Majestic), with a sales pitch that included "and we just put in new brakes". Now, two years later, and perhaps 10,000 miles older, as I work from home, they tell me I need new brakes. AND, that I will cost $800 to repair!!! I politely tell them I had not recently plundered a third-world country, and therefore did not have the money for this repair. He very politely said "no problem" and said he would add it to the record for reference when I did have the money. Fast forward two weeks: my husband has a friend (he's "got a guy") who he went to school with who has an auto shop in West Warwick. This morning, we bring my car to him to look at, after a previous phone conversation uncovered that the same job, NOT at Majestic, would only cost $400. A few minutes ago I received a call from this guy. he said, "you don't need brakes. Your brakes are practically brand new. Like 80%. So you're all set." I explicitly stated I didn't want the upgraded rims, but even worse, the total invoice price had jumped by $3,000. When I asked how a $1,000 rim add-on resulted in a $3,000 price hike, they brushed it off, claiming market prices had gone up and that it was "impossible" to honor our original signed agreement. The sales manager, Julio, was awful to deal with. He didn't care about customer service or explaining the sudden price hike and hidden fees his only focus was squeezing out as much profit as possible. What makes this worse is that I have family who have worked at this dealership for over 6 years, and I kept being told I was "being treated like family." If this is how they treat family, I want no part of it. To top it all off, I am still waiting for the return of the down payment I left over six months ago. I call constantly and leave messages, but nobody calls me back. I even went in person, only to be given excuses like "the finance person leaves at four," with zero follow-up afterward.
