After a whole lifetime in Chicago, I failed to get tenure there and had to start over in Milwaukee. We didn't really know anyone in town, and although I've traveled all over the world, only Chicago has ever really been home. Maria comes from a big Catholic family in small town Western Michigan, and Christmas is a special time for her. Well thanks to the then strong public teacher union presence, my new job paid a living wage, for the first time we were able to afford a house. That house really became a home after we discovered Grandpa Vern's seasonal operation and got our first Christmas tree. Since then, we've found them every year, every December we get a wonderful fresh tree they've grown and brought down from their farm in Northern Wisconsin personally. Our 7 year tradition isn't yet impressive to them, they've been at this for two full generations. Their prices are so much better than what you would get in Chicago, the quality is much better, and they will secure the tree to the roof of your car competently and quickly. They take cash or cheques, no credit cards, the CVS next door has an ATM.

Not only is the farm family run (by a spectacular multigenerational family I might add), but it's filled with all the magic and mystery of the season in the best ways possible. I can't imagine the stress of running a seasonal operation, one where people only consider the here and now and don't recognize the YEAR LONG process that organizing, setting up, planning, creating takes but the O'Malleys do it flawlessly and every year surprise and delight us beyond compare. We love kicking off the holiday season with a trip to the farm to pick up a Christmas tree but more than that, we love the festive and unique experience they offer for us and our three little kids. Let's start with the FREE inclusions...big bonfires, pictures with Santa, hot chocolate and popcorn, shots of Jameson for the moms and dads just trying to stay warm this and every holiday season, funny and cute little holiday headbands (which are such a hit with the littles), holiday photo ops, and the scavenger hunt hayride, which is a family favorite. Then add on the special little extras like snacks (pretzels, churros, chili?!), and s'mores, and even PHOTOS WITH SANTAS REINDEER?!! It's truly like seeing your childhood dreams become a reality. If you haven't had a chance to visit, please do! You and your children (or just your inner child) will thank you!

Forced family event turns to great experience…read more This place has such a great selection of pre cut or cut your own. Seems like the majority is Frazier but we went pine this year for the first time. Loved the different areas spread all over to cut your own. They even have atvs driving around to take your cut tree to the shake station. If you have little kids there's some fun stuff and they have drinks and food. Happy we ventured here. Worth the 1-1/2 hour drive.

A tradition that started with 4 or 5 of us and has grown to 8. We have not actually bought a Tree from there in years (They're Overpriced) but our friends always do, they love the tradition of cutting their own tree, their oldest son has taken on the responsibility, something he is very proud of. There is obviously MUCH MUCH more than just trees though, Our kids love the animals, santa, snacks, and shops. We always bring a few adult beverages to chat around the outdoor firepits, spend quality time together roaming the property, petting the animals, indulging their delicious foods and making new memories. Williams is without a doubt the best option in the Rockford Area and I would highly recommend bringing your family and friends.

Great service, fun atmosphere, fair prices!…read more We went to the pumpkin farm a few weeks ago. We arrived at 4:30 pm only to find out they closed at 5pm instead of 7 pm as the Google listing showed. The person working the stand was so friendly and accommodating. She said we were still welcome to walk around and try everything out, so we did. It was pouring rain and we ran around to all the activities - the pedal cart track, the corn maze, pumpkins bowling, the fishing pool, tic-tac-toe, and the lasso challenge - in 30 minutes and had a blast. We were the only ones there and it was way worth the $4 entry fee. We also bought some pumpkins on the way out. We appreciate the fun experience and the great attitude of the woman working the stand. We will definitely return another year! *The Pumpkin farm is opened until 5 pm and then there are night festivities starting at 7pm.

Buffalo Bill's offers the option to explore and cut your own tree, or grab a pre-cut tree from a display area. They provide saws and sleds for cutting things down and transporting them, and the shaker which gets rid of all the loose needles, and they tie the tree up nicely. Workers are always super friendly (is it possible to be cranky when you work at a Christmas tree farm?). I love that you can walk around so many different areas of the farm and take photos and explore the trees. They have a small fire pit for warming up, and some playground equipment for the kids. There are tons of Christmas-y inflatables and cut-outs, and Santa is usually there. Lots of photo opportunities! In the trailer kids can grab cookies & hot cocoa or cider and also make a pinecone + glitter ornament. We skipped that part this year because of COVID and how crowded it was, but we've always enjoyed that in years past. You can also get natural wreaths and other greenery, and sometimes they've got fundraisers going on with food for sale like brats and such. We're regulars and will be back again next year!
