Went bourbon hunting while in Austin Texas and decided to drop by Chris's Liquor Store. 1st this place has a small parking lot but yes it's free which is great news in Austin. 2nd the place has lots of different bourbon to choose from and they also have free samples which is also nice when bourbon hunting. 3rd the owner of this place is nice and friendly. Just ask what you are looking for and he knows his inventory. The prices are just a bit higher than TW or Spec's but they have lots of interesting stuff. read more

Stopped in recently and won't be back. When my partner asked me a simple question ("what do you want to get?"), an employee loudly inserted herself with, "I don't know, booze?" The comment came across as intrusive and unprofessional. Light joking is fine, but when staff make rude remarks at paying customers in an aisle and don't understand basic boundaries, it reflects poorly on the business and creates an uncomfortable environment. On top of that, the prices here are significantly higher than at other stores. read more

Its no Twin Liquors, but ive never been disappointed with the available selection when looking for beer/wine/liquor/whatever. I rarely ever write low star reviews because I'm usually very understanding when it comes to poor service or mediocre food (hence why 80% of my reviews have 5 star ratings), but my encounter with this liquor store today on 7/5/19 a little before 6pm was awful. When we first walked in, we were greeted by two different and very friendly people who were offering samples of their tequila and vodka. They were great and we had a nice little chat with them. They obviously didn't work for the store so that encounter is separate than with the actual clerk with the septum nose ring who rang us up. From the moment we got the the counter, the vibe was interesting and quickly got very negative. We were curious as to why he was putting all of the items we purchased into one bag knowing that all of our stuff was heavy. We questioned him if he was going to put it in another bag, but he pretty much made us feel stupid for even asking and said they should all be able to fit in one bag. It did course fit in one bag, but we were just worried consolidating it into one bag would be heavy and make it difficult for us to carry since we were taking a shared-ride (not our own vehicle). We gave strong clues that we'd like a second bag even though he gasped at us for making such a "ridiculous" request apparently. At that point the moment was super awkward and there was definitely some tension going on. He made us feel very weird and I feel like as a paying customer, asking for something as simple as an extra small bag (even if we had to pay for it) is not an outlandish request. We were very blown away, and after we made the comment to each other when we walked out that there was some negative energy going on, he really had the nerve to come outside and ask us if he was the negative energy. All in all, this put a damper on our day because we were so blown away at what had just happened. Very disappointing. read more

My roommate and I had 15 minutes to kill and wanted to go to a liquor store. We weren't familiar with the area we were in, so rather than look up a liquor store online, we literally looked up and saw a liquor store in front of us LOL. We popped in and were greeted by 4 tables where they were sampling all sorts of alcohol. Awesome! I tried an amazing coffee liquor I might have to pick up (dangerous), and my roommate tried a gin he liked and ended up buying. I looked around a bit... decent selection, looked like decent prices. The store is well maintained and well organized. While it may seem small upon entry, it's selection is vast. Yesterday I found a Jefferson Bourbon that's aged at Sea. Like the Ocean. The beer is always cold, and the liquor room temp. With a few options for chilled bottles. The staff are well educated, and very helpful. Stephen King was the first associate I ever met and we clicked almost immediately. Sadly he's no longer there but his replacement Stink Eye Pete as I affectionately named him, is very friendly, and helpful. And funny. The prices are fantastic. The owner does everything within reason to squeeze out the competition. I enjoy delivering there every Thursday. And shopping there on the weekend. read more

This will be my first official review of a liquor store...yay?! Is this a gateway review?? I found this location because I was storing some items next door. The staff is very friendly here, and I felt welcome. The aisles are well organized and clean. I was impressed by the selection. I definitely plan on going back since I pass by often and now know that the owners are local. On the first visit, I purchased Cruzan Rum, Tito's Vodka (holla), Buffalo Trace Bourbon, and some Firemans 4 beer. Don't go here looking for Miller Lite, as they have a much more impressive selection of imports and craft beers. Ample parking. Nothing makes me and my pooch's day like strolling to our local liquor store to pick up a few of the essentials: limes, soda water,whiskey. Dog-friendly and people-friendly, the workers here know their stuff, and know why you're there. No frills, just basic liquors, a few wines, and random snacks. On less hot days it's fun to stand in the parking lot it shares with Mr. Natural and guess which store the raggy-looking hippy kids will enter. The staff is incredibly friendly, the prices are good and the presentation of their bottles are impeccable, especially behind the front register. They have great deals ( like all mini Svedka flavors for $6.99) and they also carry an impressive array of cigarettes. I got to Chris's Liquor's II (the 78704 S Lamar Location) because I have been going to the salon--Shag Salon--right in front of it for over a year. Having the most talented hair dressers in Austin at Shag and having such a great liquor store in the same parking lot is SUCH a great plus! 2203 S Lamar Blvd is a one stop shop for all my needs of looking great and feeling awesome. This is your no-frills local liquor store. It is conveniently located and the staff has often been helpful in aiding me in selections. They don't have a lot of the obscure stuff I often seem to be looking for. Chartreuse and Strega were two examples today. I could also do away with their gigantic vodka selection and get some more liquors with actual interesting flavors instead. But some people like that stuff. They do have a pretty good local selection. I like not giving money to Spec's sometimes - but despite that, Spec's just has more space and more volume to get the rare stuff. read more

I like Chris's because it's close to my house, they have the beer and liquor I want, and because they love my dog. But it's dirty, the bottles are usually dusty, and I always feel gross when I leave. But I leave with booze, so I can't complain too much. read more

If you're buying high end items I suggest price checking with the westgate location. I was in the area today and went in for a bottle of Blanton's. They charged me $108. After thinking about it later in the day I thought that was kind of high. I contacted the westgate location and they had 2 left for $79. Never going to the Lamar location again. read more

This is my go-to liquor store. The staff is friendly and helpful. I wouldn't think of going anywhere else... Now, if you try to scam them by putting a ball of cloth in a bottle, I wouldn't be very nice to you, but I'll bet they don't buy the BS. I trust these guys and count on them for my needs. They even offer to take my purchase to the car if it is a large sack of stuff... you don't see that much these days, but I do count on these guys to be great and helpful. read more

Just moved to the area and finally popped in tonight! I was greeted by a nice dude and I tried some cinnamon tequila samples and then some local vodka called Cinco from San Antonio. I love Chris's Liquor on South Lamar. Angie and the other staff are great. They have excellent customer service, often filling orders for us at sort of the last minute- because sometimes we forget to call ahead. I remember back in the day when having a liquor store in your neighborhood was a bad thing. It was a sign of social decay, sinful living, wanton lifestyles, and other such pearl clutching phrases. Luckily, liquor stores and society in general has done some growing up in the intervening years and places like Chris's Liquor are the result. This place has a huge selection of booze for such a relatively small space and friendly, knowledgeable staff more than happy to help you make a selection to improve your weekend (or weekday, I don't know your life) plans at a reasonable price. If you're looking for something in particular and they don't carry it, they will generally order it for you. They also regularly have vendors giving out free samples on Friday afternoons. And as a bonus, their walk-in beer cooler feels AMAZING on super hot summer days . . . which is pretty much every summer day. At the risk of sounding like a lush, my husband and I come here often enough that we are regulars and feel fortunate to have this boozey resource conveniently located near to where we live. read more

I went in with a friend to buy a bottle of highland park scotch. I asked for a public restroom, which I was declined. No problem. So I chatted it up with the nice lady behind the counter. Just being friendly. Then the guy behind her asked me if I was "being a smart ass". Was obviously aggressive. When I said I wouldn't give them my business again, he replied with "good". Are you serious? Is that your level of customer service? All the liquor stores in Austin, and you treat your guests that way? Ive been in bar management and customer service for over 10 years.
