Vinny recently moved to VP Salon Organic and I'm happy to say the transition has been seamless. The new space is pleasant and welcoming. The pros are that he's a very nice guy, the right amount of talkative and personable, and to some degree he seems to know what he's doing. Regulars filtered in and out of the salon during my two hours there; he is clearly beloved by the people who come to him. I don't know what went wrong with my request. I asked for highlights, but I asked for them not too close to my roots so that I could grow them out cleanly -- sort of like a balayage. I didn't exactly want a balayage, but the general idea that the highlights looked natural without being streaks. When I came home and saw my hair under my own lights and mirror, I cried real life tears. It looks terrible. There is a halo around the top 4 inches of my hair where no highlights exist, about 2 inches of highlights in the middle that go from brassy to blondish, and returns to my natural color on the bottom couple inches. $200 later, and all I got out of it were terrible photos to send my mother and a ruined weekend of figuring out how to fix it before my upcoming event this weekend.

I never did much with my hair, and after taking a chance on a "high-end" salon across from Maggie Daley park I decided I would never do highlights or anything other than a cut ever again. The lady didn't use toner on my hair, and it was so brassy. I lost all trust in hairdressers, until I met Jeffrey. I shared the story with him and he was just as horrified as I was. I decided to try balayage again with him, and I'm so glad I did! He has mastered it. He stresses the importance of keeping the hair healthy, getting regular trims and using the correct products. He isn't pushy and definitely won't do anything to your hair that he doesn't think needs to be done. When I pressed for curtain bangs, he was very hesitant, and gave me pieces that framed my face instead (we had agreed to try this) and it was exactly what I wanted. He's someone I would book a flight to see if I leave Chicago, or if he does. He's awesome!

So..... I want to tell you all not to go to Adam. Because he's now my colorist, and no one can look…read moreas fab as I do after seeing him! #mycoloristisbetterthenyours Really though, Adam is UHmazing. He specializes in blondes, and he's not kidding. The man can blonde like it's going out of style! Let me backtrack, I came to him after extensively looking for a Guy Tang- like colorist. I love Guy's work, but he's in LA. And probably not booking regular non-celebs... so, I went back to my natural light brunette hair after having a bit of stress induced hair loss, three years later, I can't take it anymore, I need to go back to the blonde I was for 20+ years. Enter Adam's IG account and the answer to my prayers. All the pictures are like blonde hair porn, all untouched, glorious pictures of "afters" different shades, from ice to caramel, to honey and ashy blonde. That sold me, I nervously texted him (that's how everyone does it these days on social media!), not expecting an answer for a few days, and anxious wondering if he would be cool and professional, or standoffish and short. Well I got a text the next day! (Cue angels singing) he told me I could come in the following day or weds for an appointment, as he had a cancellation (blasphemy!) Shag salon is on Belmont at Sheffield, super clean and modern- all white walls, pops of black and natural wood. Adam was checking out a client, I overheard a bit of excited and friendly conversation which put me at ease, tamped my nerves down a bit. We sat down and he asked what I wanted, my hair history, problems, etc and then explained the different techniques and what he was proposing to do. I said BLONDE! He mixed up his magic color pastes and got to work. 2 or so hours later I was looking like Princess Elsa with a stunning ashy bayalage and baby lights. Girl- I almost fainted. Not only is he talented, Adam has a wonderful, colorful personality, great conversationalist, and beyond knowledgeable in his craft. When he speaks of color theory and working with other professionals in his field, you can tell he not only understands hair from A to Z, but it is also his passion. Watch this space folks. He is going to bring Chicago hair color into the forefront, surpassing LA, NYC... he's the real deal and the upcoming king of colorists. Seriously, get your appointments booked for 2019 NOW.

Before coming to Vardan, I used to go to a very good hairstylist at Mario Tricoci - Old Orchard, but it was far. It was a great decision--he gave me an even better haircut than I used to get at Mario Tricoci, and for a lower price ($110 for a haircut there). His skill and attention to detail truly stand out. The salon carries a wide variety of Aveda products. Before this, I had no idea Aveda had a skincare line! I ended up buying an exfoliating treatment and hope it works well for me. Highly recommend!
