My first time there, the clam chowder was outstanding, I think it was the best I ever had! So loaded with clams, I have never seen anything like it! I then had a perfectly cooked 1 1/2 lb lobster, which tasted so fresh, sweet and juicy! The restaurant is small, not a place you go to for ambiance. They do a lot of take out but if you are dining in, I would suggest making a reservation, due to the size of the restaurant! The service was very good as well! Chowder was very good and full of clams, but a little under spicey, for my personal taste. We also had full belly fried clams that were light, fluffy and full of flavor. They are know for their clam chowder (hence the name), I recommend always starting off with a cup or bowl. Although their lobster bisque is equally as good in my opinion. It's times like now that I wish Yelp would let you leave half stars as well as full ones because Chowder house definitely earned at least 4.5 stars from me. The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars was the coleslaw. It had a great texture, just not a lot of flavor. The restaurant itself has a casual coffee shop type feel to it, with a 5 person counter seating and a class display case housing the cash register and showcasing what looks to be homage pies and cakes. I stopped in at lunch time and was told about the fish and chips special which I was told was an 8 oz piece of breaded and fried cod with fries and coleslaw ($15) Since Arizona isn't known for the best fish in the world I decided to give it a try. What came out was a huge piece of golden brown fish with just the right amount of batter where it has a nice crunch but didn't overrun the taste of the fish. This was seriously probably the flakiest piece of fish I ever had! Service was friendly and efficient and the rest of the menu looked pretty tasty as well. I saw the food of a couple other diners that were near by, one had a burger that actually looked like the picture on the menu and the other had a lobster roll that I could see was packed with large chunks of meat. The family was craving seafood for Father's Day and decided to give this place a try. I must say, it was a good decision! The staff including the chef were attentive and seafood was fresh, not over cooked at all. My father in law has a shellfish allergy because of the iodine so we told the waitress that the cooks cannot cross contaminate. The chef personally came by our table and wanted to know more about the allergy so he knows how to prepare our food. That was the moment I knew this place really cared about their customers. Big portion but the crust wasn't heavy like a beer battered. Very light and fresh. Loved it with the tartar sauce. The only reason why I can't give this place 5 stars is because the limited menu item for land. Surf but no turf. All they had was chicken breast for $23. Yikes. My sister in law doesn't like seafood and the one menu that interested her was the signature burger but it has lobster in it. We asked if they can just make the burger without the lobster and they said no. So she only had fries and baked beans as her dinner. Lobster pie ($58) was bitter, very high alcohol content( tasted like cheap sherry) and basically gross. "Baked Stuffed Shrimp with crabmeat and Lobster sauce" was neither baked nor stuffed. No crabmeat at all. Topped with the same butter, alcohol sauce that was in the Lobster casserole. Shrimp was slimy/raw and had to be returned. Not at all "baked, stuffed". No Crab at all. Nor baked. In fact, was more on the raw side. Disgusting dinner! We were credited for the "baked stuffed shrimp." So, thanks to our server for that. We didn't ask for the credit, just wanted a great meal. As much as we wanted to love this restaurant, the comically small portions rendered the prices inordinately high, and the waitresses' downright insulting conduct only exacerbated the disappointment. We were thrilled to secure a day-of reservation of an outdoor table on Saturday night, and even more excited when a welcoming hostess seated us fifteen minutes early in a courtyard that met all the conditions of a promising location: clean, glowing with charming string lights, lively but not loud, recessed from the road, spacious, and warm. However, our experience quickly illuminated why a day-of reservation was so readily available, as people who know how wildly unreasonable this restaurant is are clearly not reserving tables. Dinner started satisfactorily - an exchange of pleasantries followed by a delicious and speedily delivered stuffed clams appetizer, after which we descended into the depths of dissatisfaction. We asked the waitress about the "Mama bear's combo," which she explained allows customers to order any combination of the 1/4 lb. listed seafood options to create a 1/2 lb. combined entree. Fair enough; one of us ordered two 1/4 lb. shrimp entrees (half blackened, half pan-seared). At $18 per 1/4 lb., the restaurant was effectively charging a wildly overpriced $72 per lb. However, $36 for a 1/2 lb. of shrimp in addition to two sides did not seem entirely unreasonable, and the waitress assured us the shrimp were larger than average size, so we proceeded. We also ordered another entree of just 1/4 lb. pan-seared shrimp. The entrees arrived significantly slower than the appetizers, and the profound disbelief felt upon their arrival remains over a day later. We regret leaving our phones in the car and missing the chance to capture the truly pathetic display that was these entrees. The sight was abysmal to an infuriating and perhaps even comedic degree, with the "combination" dinner containing maybe nine shrimp (barely more than the single entree dinner), none of which were remotely close to above average size, and all of which were blackened (so much for the half blackened, half pan-seared selection). The apparently sincere look on the waitress' face when we asked her if the food on the table comprised the entire entrees stung, but it at least elicited laughter because of the sheer absurdity of the situation, which she compounded when she confidentially assured us "that is a half pound!" (cue continued laughter). While we are still debating whether she knew in advance the disappointment that awaited us after her assurances, the experience was insulting regardless. Needless to say, we tipped accordingly (I assure you, it is 20%!), will not return during our frequent visits to the area, and will convey this information to other potential customers so they do not leave feeling exploited and misled. The best aspect of this situation is the fact that the this restaurant's owner once actually contacted Business Insider (google it) to express "worries that because of Yelp, some potential customers never make it through the door..." In the wise words of Jacob Penn Cooper Hurwitz, "the reviews suck if *you* suck." I hope this place becomes a parking lot. read more
